I have an asus g73jh (best buy model) it came with 6 gigs of ram installed (3x 2gb sticks) my friend told me that ram needs to be installed in pairs to work properly. i was thinking about ordering 2 8gb sticks and running those plus 2 of the 2 gig sticks to get 20 gigs of ram total. is my current setup running 3x2gb sticks hindering my performance at all? and will running 2x8gb sticks and 2x2gb sticks affect anything?
im not against ordering 2x8gb and just running those for 16gb total. i just want the best overall performance.
    thank you in advance.

    You have a hybrid setup.

4GB in dual channel with a further 2GB running in single channel.

2x8GB and 2x2GB will work at the full 20GB in dual channel.

Are you sure it will work in the Jh, I though the Jh and Jw were maxed out at 16 GB while the SW could do 32 GB.

@85gslse try to avoid bumping your post before 24 hours, you will not always get the answers right away and it's generally considered poor net etiquette.

I was not aware of the issue but in that case 2x8GB is your best option anyway and you can try putting the extra in to see if it's ok.

I thought that windows 7 home premium limited you to 16GB, and you needed to go to professional or up to use more ram.

This seems to back that up:
Memory Limits for Windows Releases (Windows)

So saying, I have no idea if putting 16gb in two of the easy to access slots will give you 16GB useable, or not work as it's 20GB and thus above the max? Would be a pain if so, as one of the slots is on the other side of the motherboard so requires total disassembley to get to. As long as you are confident at taking it apart (good opportunity for repaste and fan clean out) you can try adding the 8gb x 2, see if it works at either 20 or 16gb available, and if not take out all the 2gb ones and just leave the 2x8gb in.

Running mismatched sizes of ram will cause dual-channel to not perform at max performance. EX: I can't hit the 16-18GB/s I could with 4x4GB dimms on a G73-JH that I can as 2x4GB dimms on a AW. There are 2 dual dimm slots that can be interfaced. When I had my JH, for a short time I ran 3x4GB + 2 GB dimm and my total bandwidth did drop a little bit. 16GB/s -> 13GB/s.

Frankly there is never going to be really any conditions you will need maximum memory bandwidth. Considering 1 DIMM is undernearth the keyboard () your best bet would be to IGNORE the non-maximum memory bandwidth you have when running benchmarks and WSAT as you will /ALMOST/ never encounter it in any usage!

Hello, This may be an old topic or whatever but Im trying this anyway. I have the ASUS G73-JH from Best Buy and I'm pretty sure my ram crapped out, So I'm unsure of which Ram to buy to upgrade it, and I was thinking of replacing them all. I just don't know what I'm looking for. I'm good at replacing stuff if people know what they want. As well it may be possible for me to upgrade to windows 8 but right now I still have Windows 7 home , I think or I can put ultimate on it.
would I need regular ddr3 sd ram or would it have to be laptop specific?

As well I was thinking of upping the harddrive while I was in it, Any reccomendations?

    Hello MissTalon,

I recently upgraded my G73JH-A2 RAM just February this year and replaced my stock 8GB RAM with 16GB RAM. The 4GB sticks I bought were all Kingston KVR13S9S8/4 sticks (PC3-10600 CL9).

You could test out the ram running individually, but any 1333mhz ram CL9 through to CL11 should run just fine :)
