I like the overall look of the G73 better but there are parts of the G74 I find superior like the keyboard, buttons, and the placement of the memory/battery now.

Can we get some pictures for the lazy people to compare?

Fingerprints??? Awful! No E-SATA,no EXPRESS CARD slot? So many complains about these two thing and when you see at the left side of the G74 you can se that they could install both of these and still to have enough room for blank space...
-
It looks okay spec wise but how does the 560m perform compared to the 5870m (or 460m)?

the only thing i like about g74 properly the indicator light, looks pretty nice. Still, i think the fan's seriously bad looking and the red line at the border
-
I really like the keyboard, I'm not sure what to make of the battery; it looks like it might be difficult to remove. I don't really like the indicator lights or the power button being clumped with the 'splendid' button or w/e, and obviously don't like the red stripe.
As far as design goes...? The ports don't make a lot of sense to me:
- optical drive that close to speaker jacks is a big no-no, for those who have L-jacks, it just looks too close as well
- ethernet near power, this is good and bad, again it looks like it's a little too close for comfort
- no esata, seriously? the left side is barren and esata costs maybe $10
Being a righty it also does not make sense to me to clump the majority of your most used ports on the most common mouse hand out there.
Bottom panel looks the same-ish, internal design would be a big factor; if it's a pita to access the fans like the g73 I would consider it a failure/lesson not learned. Same goes for rear fan exhaust, if it works well then sure why not, if it works the same as the g73 then why bother changing it? -
G74 is fugly compared to G73. The big area below the keyboard is different colour than the keyboard. And the red lines on the side makes it even worse. I also don`t like the keyboard, cannot remember the name of the type, but it looks so cheap
-
By just looks i like the G73 more. They might have made a lot of good updates to the body of the rig to make it stronger but damn the designer must have been sick that say.
Performance? What performance? Should be the same as a G73SW. The GPU is just 5% better then the old 460. To bad they dont have a 5870 in a G73SW.
So my vote is for the G73 all the way -
-
A slot-load DVD drive would hit the spot for me. If only.

The g74 looks ugly.
-
My eyes, they burn... ASUS pissed in my eyes just now. All...those...fingerprints. All that matte charcoal... about as attractive as biege granny panties. Oh ASUS, why must you act so stupid, stupid!?
... Yep - that's pretty much the only place I could go with that statement. Silly ASUS. -
the only i like is the graphic card
i hope asus have a another good cooling design again just like G73 and G53 -
Being a G73 owner, I must say I really love the looks of it. I'm rather disappointed with the aesthetics of the G74. One thing I do like about it though is the keyboard layout.
-
Design-wise, the G73 looks far better IMO. I cannot get past the red strip and the chrome/metallic accents on the exhausts of the G74. It seems Asus took one small step forward on hardware update and two huge steps backwards on design.
-
Yeah the keyboard is nice, finally a full kb. Too bad we won't be able to just slap it in our G73, it looks much bigger. It would be nice to offer an all black version but i don't think this will happen.
-
Yup this annoys me a lot lol looks like i may be getting the gt780 r from msi after all
.

I don't mind the look of the G74 actually, I was looking at upgrading from my really really old and slow Asus F5RL Laptop to one of these in the next few months. Why go and get a G73 when the G74 has a GTX560M which from the reviews I have just read is around 15 percent faster than the GTX460M in the G73?
Also I like the way the keyboard is laid out, with the arrow keys seperate from the rest, I game with the mouse and arrow keys so for me this a no-brainer. Seen different versions of the G74, one which had 2 750GB 7200 rpm drives in it, would love a version with 2 Solid state drives instead for speed?
Desktop replacement for me as my ageing desktop is broken again, no more, gaming laptops all the way -
-
If you plan to do any hdd or memory upgrades, the G74 will be easier to work with.
-
Now that I have a used AW M17x-R3 I am amazed at all the features they've included. eSATA and the ability to use the laptop as a display for a PS3 or other HDMI video source is awesome. It was worth the upgrade.
The display itself is not as nice as the one on my G73 but overall I prefer the new M17x. Just can't afford a new one. Refurb and used are the only options if you don't want to spend $2000+ for FHD and the AMD 6970.

Do not forget the new g74 has a built 560m onto the board! WHAT!!!!?????? The old g73 does not have this feature
-
i was going to get the 74 and trade the 73 if it was better, but.... -
I wouldn't say it is ugly. I just like the G73 curves more
Along with the fact you can upgrade everything the same as what you can in your JH and the power difference is minimal as per the price you are better off maxing out your JH and holding on till the G75 or better comes along. -
Just to mention that the sub woofer is not anymore existing in G74 (Maybe some of the G74 users can contest on this), I just only see the specs from the Asus Website.
-
I saw somewhere else where someone also said there is no subwoofer on the G74.
-
I like G73's style, but I want that G74's heat sink
wahaha!
-
Go into THX and change the speaker setting from "Built-In Speakers" to "External Speakers" to fix the craptastic audio issue.
-
i know i have one .
i would rather have my "gimped" g74sx bbk7 then my old g73jh that had nothing but problems from the start, lol. -
Personally I think the HD5870M, GTX 460M/GTX 560M gave mobile users great performance leap without having to resort to extremely loud fans and 240 watt PSUs.
The real answer for this I don't think is AMD/Nvidia genius, although it's great stuff. It's the fabrication. The HD4870M and the GTX 280M were 65nm/55nm. We saw nice improvement with the 40nm.
Personally I think people who upgraded horizontally with the GTX 560M and HD6970M were not so smart if they already had a HD5870M and GTX 460M. The improvements weren't justifiable for upgrading.
The next jump hopefully will be 2012 with the 28nm. Already hearing rumors of fantastic improvements on performance for desktops. Hopefully that will translate well for mobile.
Even though these are gaming/high performance laptops, I still believe they are laptops at heart. And that means they should be reasonable quiet, with reasonable power efficiency (150watt max). But most of all they should be reasonably priced as laptops you often have to replace the whole system every few years. Not like desktops having to only replace a GPU one year, possibly a CPU next year. For motherboard upgrade, just the MB and the new CPU to go with it, everything else still should be fine etc.
For the next upgrade I expect similar price for the G7x series, $1,400 and get $1,400 worth of improved speed. The HD6970M nor the GTX 560M did not provide the performance or the price. That's how I see the situation. I hope Asus/MSI get some fantastic GPUs from AMD/Nvidia that make a $1,400 system upgrade worth it! Also something great from Intel to go with it, and everything else improved, the LCD, Optical Drive, keyboard etc from the G73jh. -
you can get a alienware on bestbuy for 1699 and HD6970m, just thought i'd throw it out there and HD6970M is quite a beast (comparable to a desktop 6850). I upgraded from a GTX260M and T9600 CPU so the different is quite recognizable to me
. Perhaps I'd wait for a GTX660M or HD7990M for a new laptop (and that Ivy Bridge processor)

its to bad that "ASUS" did not take the time to make the g73sx sound better.
-
No machine's perfect. Anyway, headphones trump speakers in gaming. Unless you have a room speaker set-up that costs more than thrice your gaming machine does.
-
I just want the"G75" to come out (or anything new) with a new GPU that blows the 5870m and 460m out the water!
-
@ Glenn is the sound quality really that bad? I thought 4 lansing speakers should do the job well I had 4 in my G70S and the sound was awesome. I do like the sound my JH though the subwoofer when working properly gives a little extra grunt.
The choice is quite simple. Both setups have the same CPU and board differences are minor although you do get USB 3.0. The biggest differences are cosmetic and if you would rather have something that is newer and has a few more features and dont care for price its the G74, but newer does not always mean better.
Tiger's G74 deal for $1499.99 is the best thing on the market for a mid range gaming model if you are seeking the latest and the greatest and have the money but if you are hanging around the $1000 mark then do not consider the Best Buy models just so that you get the latest G74 take the G73 and stick with 192bit.
@ Rampagex Agreed! I am also giving Asus one more chance to keep me and holding off buying a new setup hence upgrading mine, if they fail again I will move to AW. -
If you really CARE about sound quality, then you wouldn't be using the laptop speakers. -
The vibration is the right speaker and the cover. Part of the driver is also covered by a component. :sigh:

2 Speakers? really so the BBK7 has gimped speakers as well because I thought the G74SX has 4?
Also ignore the haters you dont need headphones ^^ I agree with you I need my laptop speakers too just like I need my touchpad instead of a mouse I want a laptop specifically because I want everything to be built into one usable system otherwise I would buy a desktop wouldn't I. I find the G73 just like G70s is more than capable of producing good sound but I have taken care of my ears no rock concerts for me
