Hey guys,
My rig is about 5 months old. About 2 weeks ago, my HDD just died for absolutely no reason. Did everything I could to try and access it but it was a mechanical failure I assume.
Any way, I swapped my second HDD for my main while I waited for my new one to arrive. Since I have reinstalled the machine, I've been having some weird problems. To begin with, a few benchmarks games have flopped. When I first got the laptop, SC2 ran poorly, then one day it randomly started playing on ultra fine. Now, I literally can barely run it on low.
A few other games like Eve Online on like, run at 60 fps for the first few mins, then randomly drop to the teens, and struggle to stay above 18. HoN also struggles quiet badly.
So, basically I thought i'd better come here with a bit of technical information if I expect people to help troubleshoot. So I made a GPU-Z log. It showed what the problem is maybe, crazy high temps. I begin with just watching youtube, then I go to a single game of SC2.
What does this mean and why are they so high? I guess my cpu/gpu is just throttling like mad. So what do I do guys!

...is there nothing I can do other than RMA? I need my laptop for work.

Which exact model do you have? If it's a Sandybridge model, try using ThrottleStop with BD PROCHOT disabled.

Are both of your fans running? check with HWINFO32
Firstly the most simple fix if they are running is to clean them out because clogged fans can cause a big increase in temps. Blow compressed air into the vents to shift any blockage or dust build up and then recheck your temps.
TJ for the CPU is 100oc and the GPU should not throttle unless pushing 105oC+ your idle temps are quite high though and high GPU temps at low load.
Worst case scenario if the above does not work a repaste might be required within warranty RMA is best if it requires the CPU to be done as well otherwise you can attempt the GPU without voiding the warranty if you are careful.
Dont worry too much with those temps though general use your fine for the moment and as long as they stay below 100oC your ok but get to work before thinking about gaming for a long period of time or pushing the clocks/settings up high. -
I do not have the SB version. I have Throttlestop installed, and the BD box in unticked.
I have ordered some compressed air, i'm sure it's dirty but I didn't think it would drop my temp by like 30 degrees so I thought i'd check with you guys.
I ran HWINFO but I have no idea where the fan check part is XD
The only other thing I was thinking of would be updating the bios. It's stock 203 when I know 213 is out. Obviously don't want to do that unless I have to, but at the same time it could make my machine run x10 better for all I know. -
Clearing blocked dust has dropped temps significantly try that and see how it goes. -
My GPU is running at 6400rpm~ and my CPU at 4200~when stressed.

Just to update, I have cleaned out the fans. There was a drastic drop in temp. Under load is now 67-69, much lower than the 90~!
However, it's still struggling. On certain benchmarks/games, there are big lad spikes after a while. I updated the bios to 205 as well. Maybe a re-paste is in order. -
Or the fans are still clogged. If you repaste, also do a proper blow out of the vents.

MAN, I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM on my ASUS G73SW-BST6
I live in Brasil... so I have a MUCH BIGGER problem.... the warranty is valid only there in USA...
I opened my laptop, REPASTED, with Arctic Silver 5, did ALL things correctly, JUST TO FIND OUT THAT ----->>> THE GPU FAN WAS BLOCKED!!!!!!
acctually, I have the notebook for 3 months... and it was working FINE before... I used to play for hours, and a couple of times I checked the temperature, and it was FINE... like, 10 HOURS PLAYING it wouldn't go over 67, 70º C.....
NOW, all of a sudden, IT's GETTING 90 with 10 minutes playing... THE FAN SIMPLY STOPPED WORKING!!! WHY???? its NOT DUST, IM SURE! VERY SURE!...
NOW, here in BRASIL there ISN'T, simply, ISN'T anything that FITS this motherboard... NO COOLER FAN is compatible...
I think i'm gonna have to BUY a fan FROM USA... wait for like MONTHS...
very, VERY disappointing... -
I FIXED!!!! OMG, I AM NINJA!!!!! NINJA JYRAIA!!!!
I cut off the center of the cooler ( leaving just the plastic/metal cover ) and repleaced with another center of another cooler ( a 7 YEARS OLD cooler from my old laptop!! heheheh )
I MADE A BEAUTIFUL ARTWORK, HAND ARTWORK, BEAUTIFUL!!!
The cables are as thin as HAIR... I reconnect them, WELDING, in different combinations, to match the Asus cooler combinations...
NOW: My very very silent Asus startup with MAXIMUM COOLING, LOTS OF NOISE, like AN AIRPLANE!!! YEAHHHH!!!!!!!
hehehe, 33º C in idle, and with 10 hours playing: 55º C!!!!!!!
PERFECT!!!!!!!!!! YEAHHH BABY!!! -

Lol ghetto ^_^ when you say the fan was clogged was it physical matter or had the inner working ceased? You should clean the heatsink with some compressed air every few months.
-
no no... I had just bought the notebook, not even 4 months old... I think it was a manufacturing defect...
bad luck! -

I would have had it properly serviced if it was that old but still, I suppose you were never without the machine.
