    Hello folks,
Since day one my Asus G73J Notebook has had overheating issues.
I remember the first day I unwrapped what I thought to be my glorious gaming rig and loaded up S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - 10 minutes in: Overheat, Computer Shutdown.
And it's been like that ever since.

I've more recently been studying and scouring the internet to become more tech savvy and figure out this problem to no avail.

Today I downloaded "SpeedFan" to see what was up. With nothing but speed fan open my computer temp for my GPU was 85, Core 0: 63, Core 1: 63, Core 2: 65, Core 3: 64.

I have no clue what's going on here. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get my GPU temps to lower - it should be breaching that while playing a game, not just chilling on my Desktop.

I was reading something about some sort of coolant to replace on the GPU, but I'm not too sure about what it is - and if that would even be beneficial to what I'm needing help with. So I figured I'd come to hear the experts voices and thoughts over here.

Any help would be sincerely appreciated.

    Thanks.

85C is a bit ridiculous for an idle temperature, are you sure that your fans are working properly (spinning and moving air) and that your vent areas aren't clogged with dust?

    Do you have a G73Jh or G73Jw?

You can take a look at the sticky which has lots of cooling tips, most of the G73Jh stuff will apply to a Jw, except for the exact layout of the heatsink and the temps.

In the hot Texas temperatures with no central air and heat AND clogged vents, my GPU never climbs that high. At most it'll get up to 75. I'm pretty sure it's just a shoddy thermal paste/pad.

Edit: and that's with a jh which the ATI card should run hotter than the Nvidia.

Yeah I have the JH. And I really do thinking it's a combination of pasting and clogged everything / extreme dust. I was just blowing on the two back fans of the laptop, bottom up, and when I blew on it dust just billowed out of the bottom slots, and out some cracks in the side of the laptop. Can anyone tell me how I can get into the fans to give it a dusting?

And for the Thermal Paste I think I'll take that to a Laptop repairsman, that's too risky for my taste.

Yeah just by blowing the back fans my GPU is down to a 70-72 temp.
I definitely need to get in there and clear / unclog. Any suggestions on how to get near the by opening?

Have to completely disassemble. The fan openings are unfortunately buried underneath a wall of screws and plastic. Can't even aim an air can in them from the panel on the bottom as the openings are on the top of the laptop near the top buttons by the monitor hinges.

If you are a complete newb at digging around even tower PCs, just take it to a local computer shop and tell them to dust it out and repaste.

Or, check out the many tutorials on disassembling the G73JH that are out there. It's really not a difficult process, even the repasting. I had my retarded redneck friend do everything while I recorded it on my phone. In 8 foot seas. On a small 200 foot boat. So yeah... :p Just if you do go this route, remember to either ground yourself or touch grounded metal every now and then to make sure you aren't generating any static electricity.
