Alright, I've run into another problem I simply cannot fix.
The simple description is this: I have loads of static on any microphone I use.
Now, I've done some extensive testing. I'm using sennheiser pc151 headphones and I've tried them on three different computers, the test I use is simply to open TS3, and press the push-to-talk button. On all three computers (one old asus laptop, the g73 and one desktop) I made sure to use 100% volume and no mic gain, I also disabled TS's "remove background noise" option.
Only on the g73 did I have pretty bad static noise.
Another thing, that pretty conclusively lead me to believe the problem is with the computer is the fact that the static remains just as loud even if I turn off the microphone using the controls on the headset. This does not activate the built-in-mic (which is terrible), and on both other test computers this would result in complete silence. On the g73 it resulted in loud static.
Now has anyone had this kind of a problem before, can anyone offer a solution other then buying a new USB-based headset? I'm completely at ease with taking the computer apart, although the most I've done with it so far is to pop the keyboard off and flip the backlight cable around to fix that issue.

Is this a new purchase? If you are still within your retailer's exchange/return period, I'd recommend tossing that one back and getting a new laptop or accepting the refund. Let ASUS and the retailer figure it out. Don't let it become YOUR problem.

It's over 2 years old.

I have had intermittent static/crackling sound issues since I got my machine - when they first came out two years ago.
I recently used drive sweeper to completely remove the Creative drivers from my system and that seems to have resolved my issues. I had read about remove the Creative software and drivers a long time ago but apparently I had only removed the software. There were still several drivers and registry entries for Creative. Once I removed those everything (knock on wood) seems to be working fine. -
