Hello, I am new to the forums, but have read many posts on this site.

I bought a G73JH(used) that would start up and run, but the screen was completely black, and no output to an external monitor either.

since then I have replaced the graphics card, LED/LCD Display, and video cable. Now it will run and display the Asus splash screen, but will turn off after about 10 seconds. It will also trip some kind of safety in the power brick(green light goes out). I have tried removing all batteries, tried with AC only, battery only, both, and still getting the same results.

Previous owner said he put a screw through the video cable and replaced it(Which I think is bull).

It has the HD5870m, and the i7 CPU. It is a G73JH-RBBX05.

I am suspecting bad RAM but it recognizes the 4GB of ram in the bios. So that makes me believe it is okay. Ram is in slots 1&2. But if I add another 2GB stick in slot 3, it only recognizes 4GB still.

Right now I am still thinking it is bad RAM or a bad MOBO. My question is: What would cause it to shutdown, and trip the safety in the power brick? It is the factory powerbrick.

    Thank you for your help.

Also the solder on the mobo power jack looks pretty bad... does not look like a factory solder... I have some desoldering braid, and solder so I might test and re-solder it.

So I opened it up to check out the solder of the power jack and its output. It is 19.1V ... only left a 2GB stick of ram in slot 2. I plugged it in and it powered up and it is still running but no post or display.

Now I am really thinking it is bad RAM. Won't be able to get new ones for a couple weeks though.

As of now, It will run but not display anything with ram in slot 2. And it will post but shut down with additional memory in any of the other slots(1, 3, or 4).

Edit: AND its still running... No display, but hasn't tripped the power brick.
Edit: RAM only in slot 2

Which one do you designate as slot 1?

Try putting it in slot 1 or 3 on this diagram if that's what you haven't done yet:

    G73_SODIMM.jpg

If there is no SODIMM in bank 1 or 3 on the above diagram the laptop simply won't POST, i tested this myself.

    Opps, I meant slot 2.

Yes, it will post with ram in slot 1 or 3 but shut down shortly after.

In slot 2 it will run and not shut down. but no post.

I see, well try with only one stick in slot 1 and rotate between the three you have available. If at least one of those three is good, it should boot into windows unless SODIMM 2 is defective.

    UPDATE:

RAM seems okay(was getting same results with new ram). Tried using old GPU and reseated CPU and now no display. Put in new/used/replacement GPU, reseated CPU(to double check) and still no display.

Replaced CMOS battery and it was dead to the world(battery light didnt even come on). Reassembled and it, and it will turn on and run, but no display(LCD or external). which leaves me back to where I started when I first bought the thing. Hopefully I didnt fry the GPU that was working.

This thing is driving me nuts.

Will the HD 6870 work in a G73? Not size wise.

Yes, a HD6870m will work in the G73 with the right heatsink modifications.

Cool. Thanks. There is probably a thread on here describing it.

So I sold the G73 and bought a G53SX. Told the buyer the G73 most likely needed a new mobo so I didnt miss lead him like I was.

So far the G53 is doing well. I have yet to load all my software and games. Super stoked to see how programs will run...

Can't wait to pull this bad boy out in my C++ class and call my classmate's Alienware M14 "cute". HAHA!
