I received a new pair of headphones for xmas with the inline mic similar to the iphone headset. I purchased a mic/audio splitter in or to try and utilize both on my laptop with no such luck. Is this because I need a powered mic or are there just some configuration settings I missed, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

if what your using is for phone your probably wrong type of adapter.

I use a cheap $2 mic sometimes with mine, no need to have something powered or fancy, I also have a headset for a phone that uses the smaller jack and know that it requires a very specific adapter to use with a regular headphone/microphone jack as there is more than one kind (triple band, quad band, etc)

Go to Control Panel. Then go to Sound. In the Recording tab you can set the settings there, which microphone default etc.

Personally I have found USB mics to work the best with laptops. I use a logitech USB mic and it sounds better than any mic I've used where I use the mic in port.

I've been to the control panel and messed with all of those settings and even messed with the Realtek HD Audio manager I think it might come down to the adapter. The original splitter I bought has a 2.5mm Female to 2 3.5mm Male so I then needed to get a 3.5mm to 2.5mm converter and I think somewhere in between all of that the triple band from the headphones/mic got lost.
