    Hi Folks,
I just wanted to connect my asus G73Jh to a tv a few days ago and I noticed that the notebook displays a: Realtek Digital Output

Surprised about that fact I checked my notebook all arround, searching for the mentioned Digital Output - but I can't find any output which could be the Digital Output.

So here's my question now does someone of you knows sth. about that Digital Output?

I think that there is a connector for the digital output somewhere on the notebooks mainboard but it's not connected to an output outside the notebook case.

If I'm not mistaken, the headphone jack doubles as an optical 5.1 out, that may be it.

i think it does not, at least not a real 5.1 ch, thats why i purchased an external USB 5.1 card, i've heard the diference betwen using the headphone jack and using the dedicated 5.1 card, i think i could be the audio output of the HDMI port.

oh, sorry, i was wrong then je je.

but believe me, the sound coming from the audio jack out is nothing compared to a 5.1 card, sound coming from the audio jack it's just what i call "fake 3D sound" ja ja ja.

When you tried the Audio/Headset Jack, were you using an optical connection?

Tbh I just use the HDMI connection when ever I am doing something external :p lol

The headphone jack does double as a toslink port. You'll need a minijack toslink tip or adapter to use it. Set the playback output to Realtek Digital and you'll see the red light go on. If your system has HDMI ports, you're better off with this since then you'll have 7.1 support.

    Thanks folks for the answers.
I tought about the double function of the headset out port yesterday good too have a prove - now I need to find a cable for it.

Anyway I got a TEUFEL 5.1 soundsystem which allows to connect to using a COAX or a tosslink cable.

    - Does the tosslink output of the G73Jh support 5.1 sound?
    - Is there a way to use the HDMI out to tosslink?
    - How am I supposed to use an external monitor if the hdmi port is "wasted" for audio?

    KR,

    1) Only if it's already encoded for Dolby Digital or DTS. Some games have Dolby Surround output, but most use DirectSound, which does not. Movie output should play appropriately. Unfortunately Creative won't license DD Live / DTS Connect for Audigy MB or X-Fi MB apps unless it comes with it.

    2) HDMI > Toslink, don't know of an adapter. You can get an external USB sound device that supports DD Live/DTS Connect, like the Creative USB 5.1 Pro

    3) The HDMI Port is 1.3a or 1.4 (depending on model) and does video and audio simultaneously. It's meant for a 1-cable connect for a Home Theatre system.
