hello guys, recently i have a problem with my g73, for some reason it does not show anything on the screen, it boots up, i get windows to load, it plays the sound when you plug in a device, but i don´t plug anything, i tried with two external monitors without success, i am afraid is a problem with the gpu, i would like to know if i can replace the vc, with another 460m or if there is another possible solution for this issue, thanks in advance

You have run out of warranty?

Are you facing the issue right from POST? Not even the ASUS logo at start?

Use the hdmi to see if shows in your TV.
Or use vga out in a monitor.

    Either of two things:

LCD is dead or the LCD cable needs re-seating.

GPU has not died, without which there will be no POST or even reaching windows.

If you don't have warranty you could try taking it apart and checking the LCD cables. If that doesn't solve things, you are definitely looking at an LCD change.

Thanks for the answers, just to clarify, my computer will not past POST without a gpu connected, so in my case that i get POST and windows to load without video shown, on both the laptop screen and external monitor, is not because the gpu is dead, but because of the cables set up. i really want this to be true. can this be taken care of at any service center or has it to be specific one, thanks a lot.

Yes service centers (if they know what they are doing) can solve this issue. Which service center do you plan to take it to?

    Hello!
I think i have the same problem... I bought an ASUS G73SW 21 days ago... The first days i didn't had any problem with the LCD, but since i plugged the notebook to my LG HD TV (maybe coincidence...), now, randomly when i boot up the notebook, or when i wake it up from suspension, i get a black screen... and the only solution is to power it off with the power button. And then the windows starts normally.
When the blackscreen appears from a fresh start of the notebook, i hear the windows starting, but from the very "power on" the LCD is just black, and then i just turn it off and on to start windows normally.
I contacted ASUS and they don't have a clue, lol, what surprise, now its in my hands to ask for the RMA, but i would like to know if someone have any solution for that...

(im going to run the memtest86+ now as said in the common problems thread and see if it helps)
(Well, i got no errors during the memtest86+ that lasted close to 1h to complete 1 pass...)

    Thank you ^^

You can also try resetting BIOS to defaults.

I've had the same problem. No image on screen or VGA port (did not test HDMI). It was the GPU. Warranty replaced it. If it were only the LCD cable, external monitors would work.

Chastity, that may be cumbersome when you can't see what you're doing.

...Well, i did a fresh install of my graphic drivers following the tutorial "G73SW and G53SW: Latest drivers and everything you need for a fresh install", and till now the black screen didn't came up... if it comes up i'll reset BIOS to its default settings...

What i think is that the problem is about software and not hardware... i believe that if i do a complete fresh install the laptop will be better than new, because the day i bought it, when i first turned it on, asus live update updated several drivers automatically, and that's when the problems started...
If the black screen problem comes up again i'll do a fresh install, and if the problem persists ASUS will take care of it, sadly lol

    Thank you guys ^^

    Humpf =/
The blackscreen is hunting me again... i already did a reset to the BIOS options but still the same...
Looks like when the notebook is powered off or in suspension for more than 30min (more or less), when i turn it on i get a black screen... But if i power it off, and then i power it on, the screen is normal, and the same happens with suspension... ahhh!!!!

    ^^

Yes it does persist.... I tried a lot of things... i was thinking about some energy management issue...
When the blaskscreen "appears", and because the windows is running, i used to enter with another pc in remote assistance, but i cant get no image at all, what i can do is ask the windows to restart, and the windows restarts with no error messages... but now, sometimes the windows just don't resume (if i'm in a suspension state), and i have to press the power button, once, and it turns off. I press the power button again, the windows starts and i get an error message in the desktop saying that the windows recovered from a bad shut down, and with the following details:

Sorry for the Portuguese text, but i'm using a Portuguese version of windows (yeah, i'm Portuguese)....

(I didn't realized before about the BSOD, so i turned the auto-restart feature off for the next time the BSOD happens i can read the details...)

Tonight i left the notebook doing a memory test, again with memtest86+, but for more than 11 hours this time, and i got no error at all, so...

I don't know what to do next... i can't find no answers in the internet...
Im afraid to send the notebook to the RMA service, and to have my notebook back with the same problems, but without all my files... i can't really trust asus, but looks like my only option now....

    Thank you all...

    (still open to suggestions ^^)

Check the system error logs in the Event Viewer, maybe they'll provide some useful info.

Well, in the Event Viewer i saw a lot of information, but i don't really understand it... but a critic event called my attention, it has something to do with a Kernel Power event 41... and following the links i got some information ( Kernel Power Event 41) and Windows Kernel event ID 41 error in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2: ?The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first?)

I used the program "WhoCrashed" to analyse those dump files from the BSOD details and got the following details:

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Conclusion
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

7 crash dumps have been found and analyzed. A third party driver has been identified to be causing system crashes on your computer. It is strongly suggested that you check for updates for these drivers on their company websites. Click on the links below to search with Google for updates for these drivers:

nvlddmkm.sys (NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 285.62 , NVIDIA Corporation)

If no updates for these drivers are available, try searching with Google on the names of these drivers in combination the errors that have been reported for these drivers and include the brand and model name of your computer as well in the query. This often yields interesting results from discussions from users who have been experiencing similar problems.

Read the topic general suggestions for troubleshooting system crashes for more information.

Note that it's not always possible to state with certainty whether a reported driver is actually responsible for crashing your system or that the root cause is in another module. Nonetheless it's suggested you look for updates for the products that these drivers belong to and regularly visit Windows update or enable automatic updates for Windows. In case a piece of malfunctioning hardware is causing trouble, a search with Google on the bug check errors together with the model name and brand of your computer may help you investigate this further.

After that, i did a clean install of my NVIDIA drivers following the tutorial found in this forum about fresh install Nvidia drivers with Driver sweeper...

And now i'm looking forward to understand better the Kernel Power error ID 41... and it looks like something to do with power management and suspension states and selective suspension of usb devices as well, and to tell the truth, i think the problem has something to do with power/battery/suspension... or not, lol

Well, sorry for the extension of this post....

    ^^

    Yes, it does persist...puff...
I feell really tired about it lol
ASUS answered me... But they don't know yet about the BSOD details, I'm going to send them the details later, I have to atach some screen captures so they can see better some issues...
Anyway, they gave me a link to download the later Bios drivers to flash the bios, but the version they linked is the one I already have, and is up to date, since the first day I got the notebook, because Asus Live Update updated all the drivers, including the BIOS.
What I don't know is if there's some difference between the installation that the asus update tool did and the flash to bios that they tell me to do, even if the bios is up to date...
    Any help is very welcome...
    Thank you ^^

Man, I got the same problem. I believe it is the GPU because one time I booted into windows and the GPU was not detected. and my GPU cant handle an overclock worth and when I try to play BF3 it just crashes and so does Battlefield bad company 2. Im really disappointed with ASUS on this one. They probably wont get my business again.

But the thing is that my notebook works perfect when it does start (including the screen lol), i mean, i play the whitcher 2, fable 3, Might & magic heroes VI, deus ex, and everything works ok, im going to install battle field 3, and i bet it will work well... i never got an error while playing, neither a crash, nothing!
My only problem is when i shut down or when i suspend the notebook... actually the problem is when i wake it up from suspension or i turn it on from power off... is some kind of power problem...or something to do with overclocking (i don't even know how to configure overclocking or even disable it...), there must be some kind of bad configuration or issue with the way windows manages the way the different components lower their response/performance, or enter a state of suspension....AHHHH!!! lolol

Here are all the bad starts that i got:

    Hello!
    Sorry for the late "answer"...
So ASUS took my notebook, they changed the VGA Module (Graphic Card), and now is working normal...

So, it was a hardware problem...

Thank you for your help! ^^

Sorry for waking up an old thread but I just started getting the exact same issue and my laptop went out of warranty 2 months ago. Has anyone managed to fix this without replacing the video card ?

    Here's a thread where a user resolved a similar problem on a G73JH: G73JH Black screen :(

Of course, there is no guarantee you will have the same success...

That sounds interesting. Tx. I'll try and see if I can get my problem fixed that easy, if not, I'll take it to the local service and see what they can do about it. Either way I'll post my solution for others to see.

That sounds exactly like my story. In my case there was no cat involved but the same behavior. At first it was random. Sometimes, when I powered on from a cold start the screen would not turn on. Then in the past few weeks the first boot would never work but I let it enter windows, heard the windows sound, powered it off from the button and it started as normal after that (guess it needed to warm up a bit). After it started, it worked flawlessly until the next cold start. Now it just refuses to turn on, period. Other than that everything works perfectly. My windows starts, messenger logs on, teamviewer starts but the remote desktop shows a black screen too. I suspected it was some sort of contact too.
Tx a lot for the tip. If it's the same fix then it can be labeled as a common fix to a common problem for others. I'll be back when I manage to solve it.
