So i'v been getting pretty slow download speeds, however, no issues uploading.

So i go to my internet providers speed test to test out my speeds and i am getting 23.77Mbps (2,971 KB/sec) download and 26.84Mbps (3,354.6 KB/sec) upload. The problem is my download should be in the 70Mbps range.

So i take the laptop and directly connect it to the router and do a speed test, the exact same results. The problem is my friend brought over his laptop and did the same test and was getting 70Mbps to my 23Mbps (our upload speeds were the same)..whats going on??

It cannot be a router issue because when using Ethernet cords i am getting the same speeds as wireless but my friend is getting 70Mbps when plugged in. Please no stupid comments, i dont have bit torrent going, i am not downloading anything and i turned wireless off when i did the speed tests.

Seems to me like you are using a wireless g adapter or a wireless g router. At the very least, you are at wireless g speeds, that much is certain.

I'm guessing you're connected in Wireless G mode, and your friend connects in Wireless N mode.

Disable your wireless card and plug in with a cable and reboot and retest..

lets rule out a few thing.

Also try connecting to the modem and not the router to see if it increases at all.

I'v done that and no improvement.

I am totally dumb founded as to why this is happening. I called ASUS tech support and they suggested that i reformat the computer. So when i go home for Superbowl weekend i will do it then.

They are exactly the same. It never gets higher then 30Mbps, wired or wireless, when it should be 70Mbps.

This is such a weird problem and there is no help online. I will bump this thread next weekend once i reformat my computer. If that doesn't help it looks like this thing is heading to ASUS for repairs.

edit: sarge_ i went to your latest drivers link and tried to install the latest Atheros drivers. At the end of the install i got this error: The Device may not be present or could have been ejected/unplugged from the system. Insert or Reinsert Now.

I really dont understand what the hell is going on. How can i have internet access when my network adapter is unplugged? And how the hell do i plug it back in??

And you're absolutely sure that other PCs get 70mbps on the same cable? Did you reformat?

When plugged in using ethernet cable directly to modem, try setting your NIC speed settings from auto to manual and see if it makes a difference. This may be a long shot, but also make sure that you're not set to half-duplex (vs. full duplex).

I am 100% positive. No doubt.

Reformatting tomorrow evening but when i tried to install drivers i got this error "The Device may not be present or could have been ejected/unplugged from the system. Insert or Reinsert Now." My previous post goes into more detail so i am just really confused. Nothing is making sense.

    reformatting this evening.

I am absolutely, 100% sure the other PC got 70Mbps with a Ethernet cord while I only got 30Mbps with the same Ethernet cord.

But as i said above i'm getting that weird error when i was trying to install the driver update.

    edit:

I must have really messed up because now my Ethernet adapter isn't working. I disabled wireless and plugged in an Ethernet cord and nothing is happening. I checked my Device Manager and apparently when i tried to update my drivers it disabled the device and since i am getting the error i am not able to re-enable it. I will post again after I reformat and see if i can even get my Ethernet to work. This whole thing is really starting to me off!

I have no idea whats going on and i don't even know where to begin.

Laptop at parents: No issues what so ever. Getting a full 70Mbps and able to download at 8.5MB/sec

Laptop at home (1st night): No issues! I played around with some settings and i was getting a full 70Mbps and full 30Mbps upload.

Laptop at home (2nd night..right now): It is back to 30Mbps download and 30Mbps Upload. I have no clue whats going on here but it is starting to get really frustrating.

Is there any explanation as to why one night everything would be alright then the next everything is messed up?
