    ASUS G74SX auto shutdown

    Hi I bought the above today but when i tried running WOW, less than a minute later it auto shut downs.

    Could it be a overheating issue?

    Or could it because I have yet to finish downloading WOW fully? The downloader was at the 20% mark when i started playing....

    and advice?

    Download HWiNFO 64, and check what the temps are at idle. If your idle temps are around 50C-60C, then launch WoW and check the max temps after having the game run for a while. If you're idling at 70C or above, don't bother with running a load test. In any case, you can post your temps here and we'll advise you depending on what your issue is.

    My temps look normal don't they? I am waiting till WOW finishes updating before posting temp with wow ...thanks for reading and suggestions..much appreciated...

    A screenshot would have the job quite nicely, but yeah, your idle temps look normal. It is still possible that your load temps will be too high, but based off your idle temps, that shouldn't be the case.

    Hi

    I am still experiencing auto shut downs.

    I am monitoring the temperature while WOW loads. When it starts, the temp sensor shoots up to 98 degrees celsius and starts dropping steadily. However,auto shutdown still occurs.

    Should I send it back?Is there an issue with the GPU? Mine is still valid for 1 to 1 exchange...

    Pretty sure it's overheating.....was monitoring the GPU temp while WOW was running.....temp hit 100 degrees celsius and the whole machine instant shut down....

    so it's a GPU issue? fans not spinning?

    Probably a hardware problem ( fans ) , i never saw a G74SX going on 100° ...

    The cooling system is so powerfull that it's impossible that it goes so high ( or you live in a really dirty room with fans full of dust )

    Try air blowing to see if they are not just dirty , but i suggest to check your temp , it's not normal.

    When did you buy it ? I got mine for like 6 Month , and cleaning it only once with a few air blowing , it never goes above 60° ...

    Catzoos right, ive never seen mine rise close to 100 either, for any game. Is your laptop positioned in a way that it covers the rear exhausts?

    Did you clean the heatsinks using compresses gas lately. It could be dust in the heatsinks, degraded thermal paste, a broken fan or a faulty sensor. Dust in the heatsinks is something you can fix yourself, the other possibilities mean RMA.

    That's some pretty severe overheating for a new system. if I were in your situation, I would try doing a Windows System Restore to the time before you installed WOW. Then reinstall it and let the download complete before launching.

    If you still overheat, then perform an ASUS Factory Restore by pressing F9 at the ASUS splash screen. If your laptop still overheats, then go for the exchange. If you don't have time to do the troubleshooting, then just exchange it.

    I made the decision to do a 1 to 1 exchange....I tried to get a screenie of the temp going 90 degrees and above but before I could do it...blam! Laptop auto shut down.... :(

    I am probably going to receive the new one next week, is it advisable to run some graphics intensive program like 3DMark to test the GPU?

    I think it's a good idea to stress test the GPU briefly. HWINFO64 or SpeedFan can be configured to log CPU and GPU temperatures.
