Put plain and simple: the display truly sucks:
•Panel HardwareID: LG Philips LGD046C;
•Coverage: 93% sRGB, 69% NTSC, 72% Adobe RGB;
•measured gamma: 2.1 ;
•max brightness in the middle of the screen: 325 cd/m2;
•contrast at max brightness: 660:1;
•white point: 7900 K;
•black on max brightness: 0.52 cd/m2;
•average DeltaE: 1.97 uncalibrated, 1.25 calibrated .
I come from the bliss of a AUO B156HW01 v.4 and was wondering if someone can suggest a good high-quality display replacement for this powerful gaming laptop.... something with high color GAMUT etc. and compatible connector. Thank you!

I personally find this display pretty good, and its one of the only IPS 17" panels available. Unless you're a graphics professional, it's a perfectly adequate display. I believe the full model # of this panel is LP173WF4-SPF1. It is also used by the Lenovo Y70.
I'm actually typing this on my new Alienware 17 R2, which uses the same panel. No complaints.
Truly awful? A bit of an exaggeration there.Spartan@HIDevolution likes this. -
Because common users are used to mediocre panels....
it's unfortunately the most underrated part of todays (even expensive) laptops.
You should see a AUO B156HW01 v.4. Superior definition, colors...
I'd really like to find something similar to AUO B173HW01 v.4 for the ASUS G751JY. And 60Hz please for smooth view with 60fps games. Can't use that because connector is different.Last edited: Feb 15, 2015 -
If anyone wants to sell me their lp173wf4-spd1 panel then pls PM me. The G751 uses a 30 pin edp connector. You should look at the screens available on the clevo p37xsm range of laptops. Anything but 120hz TN panel should work.
I have the Chi Mei 72% ntsc TN panel and contrasts appear to be higher with deeper blacks and faster response rates than the G751 panel. -

I actually prefer a high white point (blue-ish look). But you can change that one with the NVidia driver. I admit, I would also prefer 100% AdobeRGB, but I fear that would make the screen slower and way more expensive

My G751JY came with a LG LP173WF4-SPD1 17.3" 16:9 IPS FHD (1920x1080) anti-glare screen. I don't know if that's the same one you have but coming from a PLS 18.4" screen on my previous Alienware, this screen has been the best I have ever seen. The colors are amazing. Unless offcourse I don't know what I'm talking about since I haven't used any professional screens but I am loving this

There are no high gamut options on 30 pin eDP at the moment sadly for those who like it.
-
Bad news for me.... I hate this display yellow/greenish tone (no can't be cured by calibration, I already tried hard), and misses many red tones too... Very mediocre, for those who have seen hi-quality gamut display at least.
Black contrast is also poor and hard to dinstict sometimes in some movies with dark locations. Definitely a mediocre IPS screen.Last edited: Mar 7, 2015 -

There are a few options, while they are not high gamut, their accuracy may be better. Check out panel look.

Models? Can't find nothing good...

Well what is panel look showing for the same connector and size?

Looks like my model LP173WF4-SPD1 is considered one of the best.... oh God... it's really missing MANY colors compared to AUO B173HW01 V4 and is yellow/green tinted. Black is also not so deep (0.49) and it's hard to see in dark areas (and movies). Many games that ignore my nVidia calibration look horribly yellowish and have no decent sky color grades. It seems all currently available IPS 17.3 eDP 30 pin displays suck with poor Adobe RGB gamut and mediocre black. No decent AUO even...
Is bright, and has reach unrealistic cartoon style colors with missing red tones.Last edited: Mar 9, 2015 -
Is it impossible to adapt a 40pin display like B173HW01 V4 to a 30pin cable? No adapters... backlight is different?

LVDS and eDP are a different standard.

Yes pretty much, the only mod you can do is step down from a larger number of channels of a standard to less.
-
Sob, hope there'll be a decent high-quality eDP replacement display one day...

Early days yet if you need colour accuracy hopefully more options come down the line. At least you have the latest connector.
-
The yellow tint on this display is very annoying... Color accuracy is not just a number for video freaks, the difference unfortunately is huge and visible... you see many color ditherings totally missing beside imperfect RGB colors. Once you're used to high quality gamut it's hard to go back to a consumer cheap 60$ display ;(

I use the AUO 90% panel in my own machine so I can understand the frustration. As the possible choices increase that should help

Any 1080p ips 17.3" edp 30pin panel should do the trick. I'm not sure how many are out there but panel look can help.
ASUS G751JY, suggestion for high-quality display replacement?
