Looking about the forum there seems to be a slight discrepancy with what I thought was logically correct, and what is actually correct...

This is my first laptop (well.. good laptop, G73) Prior to this I have only owned PC's which I have put together myself.

When it comes to warranties on laptop's is it true that once you open the case, the warranty is voided? That's some pretty big BS there...

No, it is not true. Many items in laptops are meant to be "user serviceable".

The G73 only has a "warranty void if removed" sticker on the CPU. Every other item you can play with to your hearts content as long as you don't damage it.

Leaving/returning your system in "factory condition" is always advisable when sending the unit in for RMA work. Some facilities are more picky than others and you're always better off not attracting attention to your system.

A few G73 owners have confirmed with Asus Customer Service, redoing your thermal paste will not void the warranty. Only breaking something while redoing thermals will void it.

So if you do open up your notebook, be very careful, don't break anything and assemble it correctly.

Hmm fair enough... I think I will be making some modifications to my modifications before I apply them (make them easily reversible)

The reasoning I was told it was voided was just because I had opened it, not because I had broke anything. By opening the Laptop I voided my warranty. Period.

Yes another owner of a G73, actually one of the first along with me, one of the first 5 owners on these forums did extensive modifications. He lapped his heatsink and added fins to the heatpipe, heatsink and replaced all the thermal pads and grease.

Somehow his keyboard lights failed so had to RMA. His warranty was intact and he got his RMA was completed. It took a bit long, since somehow FedEx or Asus misplaced his notebook for a while.

Yeah... it sounds like you are getting a bit of a run around by whatever repair center your laptop has ended up at bertio :(

The only damage I have done to my G73 is when I was trying to get the keyboard off the first time (stupid gorram double sided tape) I punctured the tinfoil(?) on the bottom of the keyboard keyboard still works and the back-lights still function so I don't know what the purpose of the tinfoil is, but yeah, its a little punctured on the bottom in one place where I tried to lever it off with a screwdriver... ironically in an attempt to avoid damaging it...

I shall keep this in mind anyway if I do need to return it :D

I am on the phone being the nagging customer hopefully getting to the bottom of this, you should not have your warranty voided just for opening it, this is such a grey area topic even though it shouldn't be as many members here have received emails saying it does not void your warranty.

I will let you know what happens.

Oh and Ziddy and Chastity are my heroes.

One thing to make sure you mention is that the Warranty stickers are intact. Most customer service individuals assume that you disassembled the entire computer when you tell them that you opened it up.
