The computer boots fine, I can see that the OS is loading based on hard drive and OLED software. However, the screen is blank. This was quite sudden, it booted one day fine next day nothing on the display.
I'm a little perplexed about the various cables to disconnect and what not. Is there a general guide for debugging these issues?
EDIT: model g50v

Is it a G1, G2, G50, G70, or G71? What's the model?
Is the backlight coming on? If not, can you shine a light at the screen and make out any text?
Does an external monitor work?
It could be any number of things. If the backlight isn't on, it's either that or the inverter. If the backlight is on but it's totally blank, check the LVDS display cable, and if it doesn't work on an external monitor, your GPU is probably toasted. -
Sorry, how'd I forget to mention that g50v

I am having exactly the same problem suspect is motherboard failure

Anybody some tips on debugging this? I'd buy parts if I knew what to replace, I'm not exactly sure what the issue here is.

This could still be a motherboard issue, you could have lost the buss controller or a few other items.
I do not know of any test that you can do with out the screen , you would need a test machine to hook up to the notebook that had the software you could use to test.
The only thing I would do is open up the case and see if the video came unplugged in some way or if it is even working. Also you could have lost the back light in the screen , I am not sure what type you have but this is a common problem with back lights on some screens. I have four notebooks here with the same issue and I am waiting to find the parts used so I can fix them.
Also the switch that in in the lid can cause this, I have replaced two so far on older notebooks as there seemed to have been a problem with some of the switches used a few years back or so.
On the lid switches I have found that you can open and close the lid a few times, and this is random , but the screen would come on and stay on in till you closed the lid again. This of course is a dead give away that the issue is the switch.
I hope this gives you a few things to check, but do you have any warranty left on this machine? If you do or had an extended one you might see if you can use that, as I do not know how old your machine is. I have never worked on the model that you have.
