Hey , Guys I have have been reading the hd 6970m upgrade information on another thread, but I thought of making a thread for upgrading an Asus G73Jh to hd 7970M , Now they are officially released by dell. And its 42 pounds more than the nvidia gtx 675m , so this card should be a overkill, anyone here to test it with Asus g73jh would be great. :D

    thanks

I believe he is referring to British currency, I have seen others posting elsewhere in these forums about the cost of the 7970.

Regarding swapping the 7970M into one of these machines, we will have to wait and see if Asus even offers this card in their newer laptops.
If they don't, chances are you will be out of luck on getting a new card upgrade due to the form factor of the graphics cards with these laptops.

I was expecting them to grossly overcharge... but idk now D: that means it'll be even cheaper on other resellers since alienware charges almost 2x for everything they sell.

This is awesome.. 7970M (70.4 GTexel/s) simply out did 6990M (40.04 GTexel/s) by 30.36 GTexel/s... That means 7970M is 75% more powerful than the 6990M when it comes to texture fillrate... And the TDP is only 65W for the 7970M, 100W for the 6990M...

Yep they are saying that Xfire 7970M's would match a GTX 680 desktop card.

At several hundred watts the lesser and for near the same price as 2 7970M.

Could be the end of Desktopreview ;)

The desktop will not be truly dead until mxm cards approach the level of universiality that the desktop pcie cards have. After that, they'll be relics relegated to super high performance or super low cost segments

wait, wait, wait...the 7970, is a bit above the gtx570 desktop version, uses less power than the 5870m, and its mxm 3.0 what ever? when is somebody going to do this, or have they already? I am wanting to do this soo bad, but I need it to work for other people for me to fallow in their foot steps.

I think I'd want to upgrade the CPU first on my jh, too bad all the CPUs aren't quite a good investment considering the cost for the power. :/ Think I'll just wait until I can find a Sager for sale with the 7970 with a solid CPU.

The GPU should work fine it is getting the heatsink modded and fitting correctly to be cooled as that is what kills the card. The heatsink used on the 6990M in the M15x ifits the 7970M with minimal modding.

The Clevo heatsink is split into a separate sections for the DIE and modules running off two pipes. Could be a possibility to mod it.

I would take a long look at the 6970M in a G73JH posts to understand what you are letting yourself in for, no easy task by a long shot and still no easy way of doing it. You need to have the tools, money and modding ability before even considering it. Then comes trial and error.

Would it be wise to use a non dell card for the swap, because most of the dell 66970/6990 have burnt out, but the clevo, and msi ones haven't in the long run.

depends on the model, but they use a inverted mxm format, which gives people plenty of headaches

the JH mxm is not inverted its a standard or semi standard mxm however lets wait till the clevo 7970m out for public then we can do some tests.

This logic doesn't make sense, unless you are saying one can only use an Asus brand card, and this has proven not to be necessary with the 6970m.

    I,

I ordered one of those magic mxm cards from upgradeyourlaptop on ebay for my g73jh and i'm still waiting for the end of their testing...
My lappy is ready to received it, and when i'll finally got it, will tell you guys the way it's work... :) or not... :(
And if it's not ok, buying an M18x with one 7970m in it and configuring a crossfire link with the card i will have in hand...

(ps : already have home-made modded heatsink for clevo 6970m @ 850/975, [email protected] 8threads, and 240w modded dell PSU... should be ok for the 7970m !)

Just a few days to wait, and the answer will come... :)

    yep

i've already followed this thread, and by the way, i'd like to thank dh48 & @tilla svl7 evgasr2 and many others about their many testings...
everything will be done to make a correct upgrade. i just hope i wouldn't have to modify again my heatsink, which is already a mix of the g73jh heatsink for gpu & ram, and the clevo x7200 heatsink for vrms...

just need to receive the card now, and i hope it will act like the 6970m i got by now...

Today I've been preparing my laptop with a possible fail upgrade...
    I'm explaining :
As we all know, bioses from asus are very poor in what it let us to do with our option...
I've been playing with AMIBCP to open a large bunch of option(exept the chipset section i coulnd't reveal but possibly moficable also )... And I flash the 213 modded bios then... It ran allright, and now everything is ready for 7970m testing (maybe tomorrow if office open)...

Love is maybe a word a little bit too strong ! ;)

I will get my card tomorrow in the morning... and next tell you guys the way it's work or not... I'm gonna take some pictures of my install, and put them on NBR later (gotta work, see my GF...)
But if it's work, I'm sure I will get the fan issue...
Been thinking a way to solve this, but there are acually only two ways : hardware mod or with R&W tool for EC.

    The answer tomorrow !

    So...

I've been doing the upgrade this morning...
and there a BIG problem about the DELL 7970m card
The laptop did POST, the screen receive a signal but did not display anything...
I've listened windows statup so i've decided to plugin the hdmi plug, and this one worked...
I havn't much time this morning, so I couldn't check the display conector on the motherboard... but if this one is ok, I can say there is "only" (with the fan issue 100% of course) a vbios problem... we need a vbios that redirects outputs differently (maybe with a clevo one that as same vram chips : hynix).
I also take some pictures during the install, will upload them later as I am working by now...

not a vbios problem at all ,
fan issue cannot be fixed unless you use an celvo card .
I flashed my dell card to celvo and bricked it , I dont want you to do the same .
you cannot redirect vbios , no man its not possible at all .
what colour card is it ?
