About to change my G75VX's screen

I've just ordered a new screen for my Asus G75VX, as I absolutely hate the low quality AUO matte screen (1080p) that Asus used for specific G75VX laptops (based on location it seems). I'm not looking for a big 'Glossy vs. Matte' discussion, but people tend to agree that the Chi Mei and AUO matte displays (non-3d) aren't high quality.

The screen I've purchased is the glossy (again; personal preference) screen that can be found here. Although I've never replaced a laptop screen myself I'm confident enough that I can pull it off after reading my off and watching some tutorial videos (and yes - I'm aware that I'll void my warranty by replacing the screen).

The thing I'm looking for is success stories basically :) Are there any other users who were unhappy with the grainy matte screen on their G75 and went out to replace it? So far I can find some discussions about the subject, but no one who actually went ahead and changed the screen.

    Thanks!

That site will likely send whatever compatible model they have by the way. You might not get what you hope for.

Well, it says that it's a 1080p glossy, 40 pin screen, compatible with the G75VX series. As long as that's true I'm happy, as I don't want a matte screen of this quality and I generally prefer glossy screens because I dont carry my laptop outside and game in a dark environment.

The shop responded with the following:

"This screen is listed for the Asus G75VX, as it was one of the options for this laptop type in production. If you are planning to upgrade resolutions, you may also need to change the video cable to a Full HD video cable for this to work properly."

So I'm presuming it'll be compatible. Asked for the specific model nonetheless, will post my progress in this thread.

The connector is indeed 40 pin, which sucks because I was planning to upgrade to a 120Hz panel, but it would require a board change to support 50 pin. I made a post asking roughly the same question a couple months back and only half-believed this, until I replaced mine and decided to check my MB. 40 pin on my MB and solder points for 50 pin... jeez.

I just replaced mine with a ChiMei N173HGE-L11. They only problem I had with the stock and the replacement is the "graininess"... but this is only an irritation and only occurs on very light backgrounds.

G75VX was my first laptop with a matte display and I will never go back to glossy, but to each his own.

As far as what will fit it... pretty much any 17.3" LED backlit panel with a 40 pin connector in the same location. While I was waiting for the replacement LCD I was using a panel from an HP DV7... HORRIBLE!!! Installation is easy. Easier than many other laptops that would require pulling the top face/palm rest/KB and whole LCD assembly just to get the bezel off.

Thanks, I've read part of your story regarding the 40 vs 50 pin connector for the 3D screen, that saved me some research on that part ;)

The reseller just e-mailed me that my new screen will be a LP173WF1-TLA2 (LG). I'm going to read around a bit to see if it's any good! The graininess of the matte screen is just too annoying for my taste, I just can't get used to it. I guess I'm just a sucker for the oversaturated colours and poor viewing angles of a glossy screen ;)

I'll post some pictures when I'm done replacing.

It depends on the surface used but I prefer glossy too :)

I just successfully replaced my G75VX's screen (the default 1080p matte screen from AUO) with a LP173WF1-TLA2 (1080p glossy from LG) and I've got to say that it's so much better than the grainy image that the AUO offered. Again, I understand that glossy is just not an option for some people, but I really hated the crappy shadows in my games and movies (and white backgrounds during browsing) so this is a real step up again for me.

All in all it took me 40 minutes, but that's mostly because I used crappy tools combined with the fact that I'm no technician, so someone with some more skills and proper equipment should be able to do it in 15/20 minutes or so.

It's pretty simple once you have the procedure down yes, glad the screen is working out for you.

i was checking out matte screen from g750, it is really darker at edges and has poor viewing angle, as soon you are not completely in front of screen you will get darker parts

This is why I prefer the clear and vivid color of a glossy screen than a crappy low quality grainy/smudgy matte screen. I would gladly welcome the reflection/glare of a glossy screen than get stuck with a grainy matte screen.

I like matte screens only if it's clear and not grainy like the matte screen of the clevo w230st and asus n550jv

I had the matte screen on my prevoius G75VW and it was horrible man. like someone put grease on the screen, colors were faded and whites appear to have dotted colorful rainbow dots if u look close

Then I upgraded to this G750JX with the 3D/Glossy screen and whoaaaaaaaa what a difference. it's like night and day difference man. it is so crisp and colors are perfect! like real life as if you are reading on a real paper not a screen

I love it and it allows you to run on 120 Hz. refresh rate which makes things very smooth

Yep I hate smudgy/grainy matte screens. Very nice on your g750 120hz, how much did you score it and where did you buy it?
