Alrighty so i want to add more ram in my G73, i got the bestbuy version that only comes with 6 gigs, and i was wondering if i could add just any only ram stick i can get my hands on or if it has to be a specific one. I actually want to add a 4 gig stick in there to make it 10 gigs of ram total is that possible to do?

It doesn't have to be a specific stick and it's possible up to 16GB's IIRC but really, 6GB's is more than enough. Hell 4GB's is all you really need and even then, you'd never use all of that unless you're that into multi-tasking. I'd use that money for a Blu-ray drive...or a better screen. That's just me though.

well i just want to add it because i have the slot for it and i do a lot of multitasking even tho i've never used all 6 gigs it'd be nice just to know i've got the gigs.
these 2 are the same price by the same company but they do seem to be different and one seems to have higher ratings. are they any good and if so which one is better?

Both of those are desktop ram. Try to match the speed of ram already in your system. Some are 1066 and others 1333. Look up the laptop Memory.
I've never tried a 4gb module with 3 2gb modules in a g73 though I have a g72 with 2x 2gb and a single 4gb module and it works.

this is what i got:
DDR3-SDRAM PC3-10700 (667MHz) - [DDR3-1333]
newegg doesnt have anything that match 1333 and 10700 the closest is 1333 and 10666...
i also have no clue what any of that is lol. -

CPU-Z will help you identify your RAM. It will give you the part number which you can then google. CPU-Z is available here:
CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting
It can be difficult to get it to work correctly since RAM timings are so critical. I read on NewEgg that G73 BB version owners have had difficulty getting a nearly identical stick of RAM to work... having to swap it around and try it in different slots to find a combo that works.
CPU-z shows mine to be ASU1333D3S9DR8/2G running 1333Mhz with 9-9-9-24 timing made by Kingston. Yours will probably be different.
Here is a list of RAM modules on NewEgg with 9-9-9-24 timings which is probably what you need...

Kingston's website has a tool that recommends compatible ram for the G73. I bought the recommended 2gb stick from newegg.
Here is the listing for the ram.
Kinston PC3-10600
It should be here in the next day or 2. -
I'm really shocked no one mentioned the dual channel deal. Good thing you nabbed a 2GB stick because if you had a mis-matched 4GB stick the computer would have kicked down to single channel and it would have slowed down by quite a bit
Always use matching RAM
-
In addition the match ram to gain performance from multichannel memory... is not supposed the Core i7 to be triple channel???

You know when I opened my G73 underneath, I noticed that there were only two sticks under there with what seems to be the fourth slot. I thought you had to disassemble the G73 to access the last slot. Also for only 40 bucks? I'd upgrade. Hell I think I just might for the hell of it, I was going to buy a BD drive anyway so I can buy it together.

I swear when I read the specs for the G73JH it only supports 8gbs of ram, and like the other member mentioned anything more then 4 is overkill, I have the 8gb ddr3 model and I havent used more than 3 with heavy multitasking, lots of stuff running at once. Id wait a couple of years when multitasking programs start utilizing this more, and by that time youd have saved your money and be able to upgrade to a new laptop anyways. Just my 2 cents

And the price was right on the ram, so why not? -
I posted a thread a while back and quite a few people said it would support 16GB of DDR3 1333. I had asked if the lappy supported 1866 mHz RAM but it doesn't so I'm going to go the 16GB route since I run out of RAM almost every day

I'm gonna run some tests with UDK right now to see if I run out of RAM, I never have yet though. What exactly are you doing that you're running out of memory Almost Tactful.
