bobbyJames, This is my first high end laptop and am very happy with it. I would suggest having the retailer test the machine prior to shipping it to you, and flashing the BIOS to 209, then testing again. For the money you will spend for this I could not find a better deal, and I spent a lot of time reading various forums and reviews, on various laptops in this price range.
If you get it and are not totally happy with the overall speed, you can always replace the boot drive with and SSD. Plus with a forum like this help is just a post away. -
As far as I'm confirmed, the "problems" are mostly solved.
Some units only function on stock drivers, but that can be fixed with an unofficial video bios update.
I'm not even sure what the rest of the problems are; creative has buggy software (so don't use it), two (or three?) users have reported that updating to bios 206 has killed their backlighting, and ... that's it? -
Quite a lot of the issues have put me off buying as well, considering how perfect my Toshiba has been...

Just remember people talk when they have problems, they stay quiet when they do not.
If you were a computer novice and you had a laptop problem, your far more likely to tap into google and find this forum and come asking a question than you are to find us just to say "wow everything is perfect"
I would estimate no less than 500 to 1 is the ratio of people posting good to bad. So just because it appears to have a lot of issues I think thats just kind of how it looks and not the core truth, its a very very well sold laptop so it has lots of owners and so more people have found there way here with a problem.
Statistically if you had a laptop with 5x more problems but it only sold 1/5 as many units you would have the same number of bad unit, but the G73 is a top selling laptop so it has a higher # of users that can have a potential problem.
I was here from the start and had one of the very first units (seriously I was the 1st or 2nd owner) and it has no problems and never has had any problems.
I have it overclocked to 1.75thz with the cpu at 100% load encoding some DVD's for me, while I browse the net and doing some other stuff at the same time.
Its a great computer. -
Well said. Also I don't think they read whats in to topic. Just scared by the title to the novice,

Well, according to this small poll:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/490293-how-happy-you-your-asus-g73jh.html
Most, if not all, people overall are satisfied with the purchase. -
Still that poll is not significant. As Vicious said, we haven't even touched the iceberg of G73 owners.
Every site I go to, G73 is sold out in days, sometimes hours and it's been like this since February. -
I had no problem with my machine since it came out(A1).
The only issue i had was the throttling which was fixed in the last bios update. -
I have no problems at all besides the keyboard lights but bios 209 fixed that for me. The most vocal crowds are the ones that are not happy and that is the case with any product. Don't let them discourage you from this laptop. GREAT BUY FOR THE MONEY!
This is my 1st gaming laptop I bought and I couldn't be more thrilled. I always have top end desktop systems but something about this laptop sucked me in. I didn't think this laptop could be any better but installing a fresh Win7 on an SSD is icing on the cake. -
There is no perfect laptop, and with performance laptops there will always be some sort of issues till the bugs get fixed.
If I was looking for a 17" laptop the G73 would be on my list of laptops to get. -
To put it simply, just get the damn thing. Try it out yourself, then love it, or hate it. Keep it, or send it back with a full refund.
Mine should be here Friday or Monday and I"m freaken pumped up -
I bought mine two weeks ago. So far i'm loving it and i haven't noticed any issues aside from fn+esc making the laptop freeze (got fixed in bios 209, which didn't kill my keyboard lights by the way). I haven't tried updating the video drivers yet and it's the only thing that could go bad at this point. Video card temps are well within safety ranges as well even after hours of intensive gaming.
EDIT: Will probably install the 10.5 catalyst drivers later today then try running a few games to see if it's stable of if i get the dreaded GSOD.

does formatting and installting Windows 7 again using the recovery disk also install the bloat software that came in with the stock windows?
or should i do a fresh install of windows 7 using my own windows 7 bootable CD to avoid Asus bloat software?
thanks -
yes and maybe

I've had mine for just under a week.
I knew getting into this laptop that there were omissions from the feature list I would like (usb3, raid, and esata were the main ones) and the battery life isn't going to see you through an entire movie.
But my last machine was an Asus m50sv that I dropped a 1920x1200 screen into and used the heck out of. They make very solid machines; and I've had no problems with any of their laptops thus far.
The g73 I have is the exact model posted in OP. It is whisper quiet and runs amazingly. I updated to bios 209, yanked one of the HDs, installed Win7 onto an intel 80gb ssd, and updated drivers and software off the cd, asus site, and got Cat 10.5s from AMD. No problems whatsoever with the lighting, GSODs, heat, or stability.
I *LOVE* this machine. I'm pretty hardware agnostic and I'll buy desktop parts from whoever has a good price/performance part that fits my needs, but I think Asus has won me over for life with their laptops.
Pros: Performance++, amazing screen quality, great build quality, cool, quiet, dual HDD bays.
Cons: $1600, no usb3, esata, or raid.
You already know if you want this laptop or not. Don't talk yourself out of getting it because a small percentage of users have problems, that happens with all brands. -

I dunno peps, IMHO, I find that a lot of the stuff installed on the asus when you first get it can be quite useful. Instead of using the recovery disk, I would probably just uninstall what you don't find necessary.
Asus Utility and bloatware guide
ex, for me, Microsoft office, smart log on, power4phone, Nero, and some other stuff is useless to me but the other stuff could come in handy. -

I recommend stick with stock drivers, many people seem to have problems with drivers download from ATI's website. I was playing Dirt 2 with Catalyst 10.3 and I got vertical white/black lines, I then uninstall the driver and use stock driver everything seem work fine.

I have a flex issue:

Outside of that, I've been using official Realtek and ATi drivers and have experienced none of the hardware issues.
All these Asus g73jh problems...
