After reading this and other forums for the past week or so, and running into the keyboard lag / dropped keys issue on two of the three g73s ive had the opportunity to play with the g73 series sounds like a lemon plagued with problems.

Are the problem posts the vocal minority? Are the machines ive played on with keyboard lag just me being unlucky?

I thought I would give folks an opportunity to talk up their rig before I write off the g73 as an option. So what ya say?

I have a JH, but I love mine and have had NO issues. You have to understand that you will read about problems, because this is kind of a support forum in a sense. Its the squeaky wheel that gets the most attention or in this case the most post. If you buy one and do your bios/vbios/driver updates, you should be perfectly fine.

Thats what I thought initially too... if your happy why post. But then I went and played with three g73s... two bestbuy models and one microcenter model before it got recalled over sandybridge. Of the three only one of the bestbuy models didnt have the dropped key problems Ive read so much about here. Made me think it was a pretty common problem.

    I have a G73JW and love it

It has some small problems but every laptop has them... i find it the best in price/performace ratio

if u want a perfect laptop (at least which will give u minimum problem) speend the extra 5000 and get a mac book of similar configuration if they even have them :p

I have a JH-B1. Came fully updated and everything, I don't even think it needs a repaste.

One crash so far: everything just froze, but I'm suspecting it's just windows being windows.

I have a JH and im happy with it. The missing keystrokes and the touchpad messing up is kinda annoying but i usualy use a mouse and I can always hit backspace.

I guess it depends on your usage for how the keyboard dropping keys effects you... for me its a definite deal breaker I program for a living and type 100-120wpm, all the typos introduced by the missing keys would kill my productivity. I find it amazing that in this day and age a major notebook maker can have an ongoing problem with something as simple as the keyboard registering when you press a key.

I guess for you the missing keystrokes would be a huge issue, but I don't type much so it's not that big of an issue. but like you said it is amazing that something stupid like missing keystrokes could be present on this laptop, or for that matter any laptop in general.

So is the JW still plagued by all the problems of the past models or have they pretty much been corrected?

    How about the SW?

    Thanks

With the ASUS G73JW/SW, can you install drivers from nvidia's website, or do you have to install ASUS GPU drivers?

I quickly glanced through some of the pages/threads and it still seems it's mainly for G73JH owners (didn't notice anyone with a JW complaining).

I can't go ASUS if it still has the keyboard issues (as I think the GSOD would be ok as I heard it was strictly a ATI problem).

Hope to hear back from JW owners!

My G73JW is running fine, no problems at all, one time i did had the trackpad going unresponsive next reboot all fine, no issues since.

Earlier releases you had to hack the drivers, as the drivers didnt recognize Asus GPU, but this was very early when it was released, then Nvidia didnt release drivers on december, but any drivers from january, including the officials from Nvidia atm install normally.

Just wondering, why do you need so many laptops?

I feel the same way, can't consider the G73 if the keyboard problem is still present... Unfortunately I have personally experienced the problem on the g73sw that was sold briefly by Microcenter before the recall. It would miss 1 in 10 characters and was very easy to out type (I type about 100wpm). It wasn't specific keys that were dropped... just 1 in 10 at random.

I went into BIOS and disabled the trackpad, rebooted and I could not duplicate the keyboard missing keys, went into bios and turned the trackpad back on and the problem came back. So its definitely related to the trackpad use and/or drivers.

So there is a fix, just sounds stupid shelling out that kind of money for something thats not 100% functional.

The issue only affects a very small percentage, and Asus have a newly appointed Manager who is being proactive in fixing the issue. I would suspect the next BIOS release will have it fixed.

The other humans in the house are transitioning to laptops ever since they played with the JH. :)

That would be great! Although from my experience its a bit more frequent... Ive tested 3 best buy g73s and 1 g73sw microcenter edition and only one (a bestbuy model) didnt have the keyboard issue. I asked the folks at xotic if they could prescreen one for me since I would just return it if it had the keyboard issue and they said that ALL of them can have the problem so they couldn't do anything about it and if i bought one with the problem i'd have to RMA it with Asus. So I didnt buy.

I have a G73jw and I love mine, I only had one issue with mine and i reinstalled the driver for my keyboard lights and the fn keys and that fixed it right away, and I only had the problem right after I installed a game.
