    Well:

    - Best Buy versions comes with a gimped gpu, which means half the power, half the perfomance, half the fun. They come with either 1gb or 2gb flavour. The "full" card comes with a 1,5gb of Vram which means a 192bit bus. Basically stay away from best buy versions.

    - All the G-Series laptops (yes, even the newer G74sx) suffers of the cpu throttling bug. Basically the cpu keeps bouncing from stock speed to 798mhz without reason even if the temps are icy cold. It does this every 20-30 seconds, causing lag, slowdowns and a loss of perfomance. Asus hasnt released a bios update yet to fix this issue, and afaik never will.
Youre forced to use ThrottleStop all the times to block this nonsense, thats would be a temporary fix. But if you put this under perspective, basically Asus sell a laptop that isnt able to deliver the intended/promised perfomance unless you know how to fix this problem by yourself.

    - Newer G53 sandy's have their trackpad fixed. Older JW models and JH, most of them, need a small mod to get the trackpad working as it should.

    - No drivers update.

Others issues are minor, most of them are design choiches, such a low grade monitor (but its up to personal tastes obviously, my g53 had a screen which i would rate "decent" unless you downgrade the resolution) and the fact that to get to both cpu and gpu you have to disassemble the whole laptop. So let's say that your laptop ships with a bad thermal paste job, then unless you have alot of time your only option would be RMA it.

Tbh ive seen a bad trend going on lately, alot of users just bought a g53 and already rma'ed it 3 times, but that could apply to all manufacturers out there.
