Id need some transparent dark blue cellophane for the G73JH keyboard lights mod, but i simply cannot find any for sale in my country or the EU that would ship to Slovenia...
Does anyone know where i can get a roll here?
(it would also be nice to get transparent dark red and green, but blue is enough for now if they dont have a wide selection)
-
Have you tried any bookstores?
-
still experiment with your (now mutant) G73???? It seems regardless all your critics you are falling in love with the lappy.
-
I cant seam to sell it and Gary still hasnt responded to my emails, so im pretty much stuck with it and ive decided to upgrade it a bit more if its staying (new SSD coming to get rid of the clicking and vibrations from the HD and i want the keyboard backlight to match the other lights). If i do sell it and the buyer wants a white backlight i can just take the foil back out, same with the SSD upgrades...
Ive tried calling every single bookstore and florist i could find in the country and all they have is transparent white or no cellophane at all, and florists that sell this stuff abroad wont ship to me... -
But if you cover the keyboard you will be blocking the air ventilation that the g73 has??? I mean, I know the air flow through the USB connectors and the ventilation holes under the screen, and part came through the keyboard too.
-
Id post a facepalm picture but im just too lazy atm...
There is no ventilation intake at the keyboard. If you took it apart you should know. The bottom of the keyboard is made of an alluminium layer with no holes (except for screws), so air cant come between the keys and the sides of the keyboard are pretty much such a tight fit that no air can really get sucked in there (not to mention theres still just a few holes under the keyboard for the cables to reach the motherboard, so theres still the top cover preventing air flow).
Air is sucked in mainly at the sides under the screen and just a bit through the ports holes and the holes on the bottom panel, nowhere else.
And the foil would be put in between the alluminium sheet that contains the leds and under the keyboard sheet so thats just another layer INSIDE the keyboard... i really dont see your logic how this could affect cooling in any way. Did you look at the photos in the link i gave in the OP? -
I've had my keyboard out twice and I'm pretty sure you can't get any air into the laptop via that route. I think the engineers focused on the fan/radiator concept. Heat from the CPU and GPU gets transferred to the radiators through the heat pipes. The fans draw intake air from the grill area just above them. They exhaust through the back, of course. I doubt that the rest of the guts in the laptop are getting much air at all. The memory area might be radiating a little heat through that plate on the bottom.
On a related to OP note... that is VERY COOL! I like it! I might do that to mine one day if I get bored. I would go with something exciting like multicolor or at least one unusual color. -
I implemented backlit keyboard using a hidden touch sensor on my N71JQ and now I would like to have the lights in blue color.
I will also be looking for an online shop which sells blue cellophane here in Germany.
If I find some online shop that ships to Europe, I will let you know. -
WOW! Thats actually really really cool!! I think having the blue to match would look sweet. Now im assuming there is no additional heat issues right? Luckily here in the US, we have tons of hobby stores that keep this stuff around in all sorts of colors.
-
Doing this wont affect anything else than the color of the backlight (unless you somehow manage to break the keyboard).
Do tell me if you find any shop that would be willing to sell it to me, or if you buy a roll for yourself you could just buy another for me (or sell me the remaining roll, since you shouldnt use 5m or 10m as i see it being sold) and send it to me and i can pay you with paypal...
PM me if youd be willing to do it. -
How hard is it to reseat the keyboard ribbon when reattaching the keyboard? The last laptop I took apart I barely got back together because of the ribbon.
-
-
Its not hard at all to reseat the ribbons
.
-
After your link to the color lights mod I might have to do the same as you with the blue lights. Would match the laptop and seams to be the color I use most on my G19.
Though if im going to rip open this laptop anytime soon its not going to just be a color mod, probably some more overclockable ram and possibly a 920/940xm... -
You just need to take out the keyboard for this, which is like a 2 minute job unlike upgrading the CPU...
I bought the only foil i could get - a clear colorless one and tried coloring it with a marker, but theres no way i can get an even layer and it looks horrible when i put it in, so i really gotta get a real, already colored one.
Turbogear do tell me if you find/buy something.
I also asked Ken if hes willing to sell me already cut out colored ones, waiting for his reply now.
-
I'm going to the hobby store by the end of the weekend to buy some, If you havn't reported that you bought any here by then I'll ship you my leftovers for the price of shipping and half the price of the roll.
-
Tried Here yet? Looks like they ship anywhere.
-
Thanks for the link, ill wait first if Ken will sell me cut-outs... Being lazy as i am its way more convinient
.
-
Guess what?!
I just implemented it.
I found in my office a dark blue A4 size transparent Plastic Sleeve.
I cut it to the size of the keyboard and built it in as shown in the guide from Ken.
Now I have dark blue backlit keyboard on my N71JQ.
The whole process took me less than 30 minutes. -
in the video link on how they do it to macs, they describe it as foil, will that work if it's not transparent?
-
If its not transparent enought for light to pass through it youll have a dark keyboard instead of a backlit one
.
And grats Turbogear! -
I found a UK based reseller that ships worldwide and ordered a few colors. Should be faster and much less hassle than ordering from US and having to deal with our customs
.
If anyone else from the EU has trouble finding cellophane i bought it here. -
Hellcry, I bought some red Cellophane last night, let me know if you want me to ship it to you.
-
Thanks for the offer, but i already managed to find a store in UK that sends it globally and ordered a few colors from them (blue, dark blue, red, orange, green and yellow)
.
Im anxious i know, but i just cant help myself. -
Cool. Ill try and do mine this weekend. Lets post pics hellcry once we get ours in!
-
I think Kens photos are a good representation of what it will look like, its not like out keyboards will be any different
.
-
Wheres the best guide to taking out the keyboard for this? Never done it before and dont want to just go in prying.
-
You can just watch this video to give you the best idea of what to expect ... You dont need to remove any screws to take off the keyboard so you can just skip right to that portion of the video.. The keyboard is held down by double sided tape and 5 clasps ..
YouTube - BToTech1's Channel -
Couldn't you use coloured transparency sheets?
-
Is it as hard as it looks seperating the keyboard from the double sided tape the first time and do I need to buy new double sided tape to replace whats there?
-
if anyone else plans on doing this, most craft stores sell transparent colored cellophane. I bought a roll here in Cleveland at a place called Pat Catan's for $1.19 US
Any transparent dark blue cellophane seller in EU?
