    Hi,

As per the subject line, I'm in the UK and am looking for anyone whose imported a Asus G73 to the UK and would like to know their experience. How it went, any problems etc?

Also, which Vendors should I look at to purchase from?

Any problems with Asus actually honouring their international warranty?

General question: Would you choose the 5870 or the 460m ?

And finally is there anything I should know that I wouldn't know with purchasing the aforementioned laptop this way? Ie: any hold ups with Customs & Excise or anything?

Thanks for taking the time to read this and for anything anyone can offer.

I imported a G73 FROM HID EVOLUTION into the UK just a few weeks back 8 days from purchase to delivery, no problems at all good price as well, 5870 is the best GPU in my opinion. registerd online with ASUS 12 months world wide warranty.

Hi Bladerunne2125 thanks for replying. You mind me asking how come you chose the vendor 'HID EVOLUTION' as opposed to Amazon.com or whoever else?

8 Days delivery sounds fantastic I must say. Lets hope that delivery period can be repeated for myself :)

Was there any issues with Customs and Excise? I'm not sure whether I should call them for instance, warn them I'm expecting a laptop in the hope they won't delay it or whatever :) Also which courier was used and when did you pay the VAT?

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Hi! I am not in UK but in Europe, and I also ordered G73jw from hidevolution. In one or two days i will receive it (which will be 7-8 days in total). I chose Hidevolution because they help customer with international shipping. There are also other companies like Gentech or Xotic, but i got to know them after i ordered (they offer similar prices&conditions). I'd suggest DHL,FedEx or UPS vs USPS on international shippings (because they clear the item at customs and to door delivery). Contact them with your Qs and you will get your answers they are customer friendly (the other two companies are also friendly as i read in forums). Good luck!

Note: As per 5870 vs gtx 460 i would choose nvidia 460, it is a newer card-fermi tech., 460 has 1,5GB while 5870 has 1GB, and also 460 doesn't get as warm as ATI 5870. On the other hand, 5870 gives only 10% better performance in general use but same with 460gtx in games (again what i read in forums). Then, there are cutting edge laptops using "Dual 1GB ATI Radeon™ Mobility HD 5870 in CrossfireX™" which i would prefer due to using DUAL cards, but they are around $5500. If you have a desktop with a good motherboard, you could however overcome the DUAL ATI 5870 with the new GTX580 (around $600) which is another story.

I'm thinking about importing G73/G53 from state side before VAT increase. Thanks for recommending HIDEvo (just check their ebay page)

UK customs only charge VAT 17.5% No other taxes. For more info use dutycalculator.com

Thank you for taking the time to reply Morikante, it's useful to know things have gone (thus far at least) well with your purchase. I imagine you're feeling quite anxious and can't wait for it to arrive by now. It's good to read that you're happy purchasing from them, as I personally had never heard of them and was a little concerned, but reading that someone else has already made a purchase puts my mind at rest a little.

Yes, I read initially conflicting opinions on the two GPUs them there was a guy that posted a screenshot that I actually understood (can't say that for many of the screenshots posted on this topic they're all a bit confusing with varying degrees of complexity). This one had the name of the card at the top, and a couple of large numbers then someone else posted with the opposing card and the numbers pretty much the same. This obviously cemented in my mind that they're pretty similar to each other. Only the names seem to differ.

I went googling for the GTX580 I was set to add it to my G73 vs GX660 or G51 list. Then I realised, it was a desktop card... phew! I can dismiss it and not have to spend the next 4 hours comparing and contrasting  :) :D

That's pretty much the same as I've been considering. I'm now torn between a 15 inch and a 17.5 inch screen.

I've noticed also that they've released the '3D' variants of both screen sizes, complete with 3D Spectacles.

What confuses me with the 3D variants is whether the screen resolution is 1920 x 1200 and can then downgrade to play a 3d Game to 1366 x 768 then when the game has finished, return back to the: 1920 x 1200 resolution, or is it fixed so everything is displayed at:1366 x 768 period!

I don't suppose you know do you?

Also, I think the 460 equipped laptops, don't have the revolutionary cooling system that the 5870 equipped systems do. I've been looking through the amazon.com website G73JW-A1 specs and it doesn't mention it, neither does anywhere else mysteriously, that or I've not located it yet.

Yes I've looked at that site a few times. I am unsure as to which site I should use, there's bundlebox which operates through the dutycalculator site, however, how do you actually 'buy' using a UK credit card? That means we use paypal, but can we trust paypal if things go badly, its not got the best of reputations has it?

That said, they use a service called 'BundleBox 'Buy Me', where as Parcel2go allows you to use an address then you pay for weight and postage via DHL from the US to the UK. I'm not sure which method to use, have you done this before and can you offer any advice?

Thank you for taking the time to reply and for any additional information you can offer.

hi. i imported my asus g73 jh to england. i bought mine from a company called btotech.
    17" Notebook - BtoTech.com

they also have a shop on ebay that goes by the same name. their customer service is excellent, and the laptop got here in just under 2 weeks. It went through loads of customes, and i ended up paying £79 for VAT. they have loads of customizations to choose from. just make sure that if you are buying fromt hem that you add the 2 years asus globl warranty. it costs $80 but its worth it. the reason i say you should get this is because the standard 1 year warranty from asus is not covered in thr UK due to the laptop being from out of UK. if you have anymore questions feel free to ask.

Why did I choose HID Evolution? because they where fast to reply to emails and there prices where very good, once the Parcel comes out of customs in the UK it is handed over to Parcel Force for delivery or collection, there where no issues at all, a very smooth proccess, the G73 is super quiet and the 5870 GPU is the best single Mobile GPU out there in my opinion.

Paying using paypal is really easy. My question is,

How UPS/FedEX/DHL collect customs charge? Are they going to call us asking money or collect the cash on delivery?

3D Version of G53 comes with low resolution screen and there's a another version without 3d but screen is Full HD 1080p.

I trust paypal because you have 21 days to report problem.(From the day you pay for the item)

Hi, they collect the cash on delivery. I also didn't have any problems with paypal so far, not that i am a heavy buyer but when i had problems once or twice they immediately took care of it.

    Hi, G73JH comes with 1 year warranty + 1 year optional, G73JW comes with 2 years warranty+1 year optional. As per the cooling system, JW is around 60% cooler than JH and lower power consumption. I just found this thread now if u want to read;

Ah that's good to know, so they do NOT pay customs fees and that's left upto yourselves. Do the Post Office turn up with the laptop and just request the money?

If so, do they accept Credit Cards? Or do they expect you to goto the Post Office and pay them for it?

Morikante suggests there's a possibility to extend your warranty, whilst I was of the opinion that ALL Asus G series laptops came with a 2 year GLOBAL warranty.

However, I found the following information on these forums:

    Source: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...3701-unboxing-your-g73-short-setup-guide.html

Which suggests that what I thought was correct, however, perhaps the warranty varies by which model you're purchasing? I'm looking at the G73JW-XA1 with either the HD5870 1GB or the Nvidia 1.5GB 460m

I shall do, thank you for answering my questions thus far.

Hi, in that link at the first page they show the benchmarks of JH which has 720QM processor (but there is also 740QM version). Not all but JW Asus laptops come with 2 year warranty. Here are some info links,

I paid the customs charge at the Parel Force depo when I went to collect the package, you can do it over the phone if you want them to deliver it for you, it was easier for me to go and collect it in person.

I thought I'd post that I've had a bad experience buying a G73 from HIDevolution.

I bought an G73JH-RBBX05 with a 1 yr "Asus genuine" global warranty off HIDevolution. Delivery was fast and all good. The problem came when I had to perform a warranty repair in the UK (the screen doesn't turn on anymore). Asus initially put it through as a warranty repair, but on the day it was due to be to picked up called to tell me I have been misled and that my unit doesn't have a global warranty. I can't upgrade the warranty to a global warranty either.

I notified HIDevolution but they haven't proposed a solution or replied to anything I've suggested. The only time they replied to me was to say: "In the past, Asus UK has honored the warranty for these models. I am not sure why they have stopped honoring them recently".

Anyway, I can understand OS warranty issues but HIDevolution isn't doing anything to resolve their mis-selling.

So my laptops been broken for two weeks and a half weeks and I have to pay for repairs myself. I will try to reclaim the repair costs from HIDevolution as an expense directly incurred through their mis-selling.

Anyway, if you do want to buy from HIDevolution I'd do it through eBay so you at least have some protection.

    Some other things:
Parcelforce charged me a £15 customs clearance fee (on top of the actual customs duty)
Factor international transaction fees on your credit card into your purchase (30£ for me)

You bought Asus G73JH-RBBX05, and it is a Refurbished gaming laptop which has "Asus Genuine Warranty = Asus 3 Months Warranty", Not 1 year. Plus i am not sure if refurbished products can keep the original warranty status.

But after checking hidevo site and it says "1-year limited global hardware warranty" at this site:

    hidevolution.com - ASUS G73JH-RBBX05 i7-720QM 1.6G ATI HD5870 8GB 500GB 17.3" DVD

But where does it says Asus genuine warranty i couldn't find?

I think you should have also cleared the meaning of limited warranty with them before purchasing (that's what i did with them, 10 emails back and forth at least).

    Hi morikante,

I attached an extract of my sales receipt which says 1 year "Asus Genuine Global Warranty".

When I bought it their website also said "1 year Asus Genuine Global Warranty", so they must have changed it (and I think in the last two weeks).

I'm not sure if you'll be able to follow this link:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemVersion&&item=300465136087&view=all&guest=1&ssPageName=ADME%3AL%3AMAV%3AUS%3A1123&tid=475444265020&guest=1

But it is to the ebay add (now ended) for the unit that got my attention. It also said one year global warranty, and "brand new" not refurbished. Their website said nothing about it being a refurbished unit either.

So I'm screwed I guess... View attachment 59295

For your real warranty info, there is an Asus sticker on the bottom of the notebook that says "warranty:12M or warranty:24M", that is what it is, not what it says on the invoice.

I bought mine in the USA, in feb, and had to RMA it in Spain. Asus asked no questions and did not even want to see a receipt. They just ask what the problem was and fixed it and sent it back to me. They also paid shipping both ways.

I have an G73JH-BST7 that I bought from Best Buy in the USA. If I were to sell it to someone in the UK, would Asus honor the 1 year warranty over there?

You're not screwed, not if you purchased using your credit card which it seems you did. In which case you've got the opportunity to claim using Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974. As mentioned here: Section 75 refunds: Free protection for ALL spending...

Also, to those that took the time to reply to my post. I approached a few retailers mentioned, I found HiDownload quite reasonable, unfortunately, they didn't have the model I was interested in. I almost upgraded to the 3D 120Mhz variant but the discussion here didn't sound too promising.

Other vendors approached seemed uninterested in me purchasing from them and in 1 other case, they seemed quite simply: Rude! On that evidence I reconsidered my purchase in light of the available evidence IF something were to go wrong. I concluded that I wasn't going to do too well and so ended up purchasing back home in the UK a MSI GX660R which I'm pleased to report is quite a capable machine.

Anyway, many thanks once again for everyone's input.

i got my g73 JH imported back in april, was fine no problems. I had a CPU/Mobo/Screen problem, which asus UK dealt with no issues.

(i ended up with a new A1 as a replacement though!)

Wish i never got the thing though really! :(

I ordered a g53 from Ken at gentechpc.

It was first scanned on the 13th of dec and then again the day after when it was cleared to send, as below.

14-12-2010 23:37 Delivery Agent - LOS ANGELES AMU Forwarded for export. Left the us.

Since then there has been no update. I got in touch with usps who told me they could tell me nothing and offered no help or advice as to whether I should be worried or not.

So I turn to you guys. Any ideas where my laptop should be? Is it possible that it has arrivEd in the uk and is delayed in customs?

Parcelforce mentioned they didn't know also, so naturally I'm a bit confused.

Thanks again for the advice, I initiated a credit card charge back through my bank and got my money back last week.
