Hi everyone,
I just got this week my G73 JH. Before i start pumping all my stuff and games on it, i was wondering if i'd not directly change the 2 500GB-7200 RPM Drives for something more punchy.
Since i need room and dont want to spend thousands on the drives, i am thinking about going for the new Seagate Hybrid drives. From what i read on the net they are 1/4th of the SSD price but rather close in terms of performance(and certainly wayyyyyy above 7200 RPM standard drives).
So i could get dual 500GM Hybrids for like 400$...but i'm looking for someone that might have an experience with them before![]()
thanks!

The only difference you'll see is in boot up times.
Still a great drive. -
Spend those 400$ on a single X25-M G2 160GB, which will can house your OS, programs and games and youll actually see a major difference.
Those hybrid drives are a poor excuse of an "SSD". They only have 4GB flash memory, so its only enough to store the files that will speed up your boot a bit as IKAS_V said. Speed of that flash is also not comparable with a real SSD. Huge waste of money if you ask me. Either you get a real SSD or you dont. -
oh well
the thing that kinda convinced me was this : YouTube - Seagate Momentus XT
now, ofc,if the difference is not noticeable for real, forget it -
I mean if youre spending 400$ go for the X25-M G2 160GB, since youll get the best SSD out there and you still should have enough storage with one 500GB 7200rmp stock HD in there...

Just remember, a SSD drive uses less power than a HDD, even hybrid HDDs.

Most of the time, this Hybrid uses more power than conventional hard drives because the hybrid part of this is not about saving power, its about improving performance. Its using more power because its moving data over from the hard drive to the flash in the background. Its not enough to NOT get the drive over, but its worth noting.
That all the reviews put this drive's performance between the fastest mobile 7200RPM drive and WD Raptors is nice. It has a good sized cache and it costs $135 over at amazon if you're fine with waiting. I think it might be less at newegg.
Now personally, I'd get the largest SSD you can afford today and then get one of these as your secondary drive. Then if you need more space, go buy a Toshiba Canvas 1TB 2.5 external (powered by the USB) for $130. That gives you three levels of performance. Fastest, faster, and slow. One level for your OS and most used programs, one level for your other programs and most used files, and one level for your backups and other files/nonessentials.
Imo.
Anyone tried Momentus XT HD yet ?
