Hi there, been a while but still enjoy the site as much as I used to. Anyway I'm having an issue with my Asus G1's display, it actually started twitching the other day and then just went out and shut off my computer. After restarting it i realized my screen was turned a gray color with a green vertical line going through it (no particular pattern).

Did my GPU fry? and how can i tell? I've connected it to an external monitor which i thought would reveal whetehr my gpu fried or not, when the windows 7 bar comes up the screen has fuzz all round it and vertical colored lines and then goes black and doesn't even work. So then i go into safe mode and it works perfectly which leads me to believe that the gpu is fine, or maybe the computer doesn't utilize the gpu in safe mode? anyhow any help would be appreciated.

    thanks in advance

With a display issue like that, it's generally a good indicator of a bad GPU. When you boot it in safe mode, it doesn't use the gpu so that's why it works. While you're in safe mode, try uninstalling the drivers and use a driver cleaner, and then reinstall the original system driver. If you still have the same issue, you will probably need to contact your reseller and get an RMA issued.

I hate to be self-referential, but in my post here I linked a bunch of articles about the GPU problems in the 8 series. Some people have gotten a warranty replacement G1Sn or G50, and I've seen people reflow these GPUs, but it's not a discrete card so you'd have to be careful not to scorch other components.

Try reinstalling your graphics drivers, since it's going to be a major headache to get your machine replaced if it's a hardware problem, it could just be a corrupted driver.

OP- do you have the G1 or the G1S?

If its the original G1 the GPU is the Geforce to go 7700. This one does not fall under the same problem category as the 8xxx series. None the less it sounds like the card may have gone bad.

That's a good point, looks like a G1 from the OP's other posts, disregard my link above. ;)

Nevertheless you may be able to reflow the GPU. Or you can wait to find a reasonably priced replacement on eBay or something, might take a while, but you can save a search with the keywords and it'll email you when something pops up.

Wow great thanks for the help, and btw I do have a G1 which does have the go7700 card inside and quite frankly am not suprised if the GPU just has just gone out at this point (actually im more suprised its lasted this long!)

Ill probably just strip the HD out and the RAM and end up tossing the thing out, but out of curiosity does anyone know that if the problem is actually a bad or fried GPU, does that mean in this particular model i need a new motherboard or can i just get a new GPU? I remember peope talking about MXM graphics and how it was swoppable a while ago but Im pretty sure i can't do that in this model, in any case its probably not worth it to shell out money for an entire new motherboard.

I will try the reinstalling drivers option first and post my results, if that doesn't work it looks like im in the market for a new computer. thanks again!
