This happened to me for the first time in July, then it stopped, and now it's been going on for two days straight.
I have my laptop on, no problem, but suddenly the screen goes dark. It's not 100%, since when I really looked closely I could see the mouse symbol and shut down the computer with it. Anyone who can shine a light on what's going on?

Your backlight or inverter may be going, hard to know which.

Sounds like the Backlight is going out. If the inverter goes out you would not see anything at all on the screen.

Sorry to hear your having trouble with your G1, mine will be 4 years old in a few months and it still is going strong.

Sometimes I can see something on the screen if I look really hard, and sometimes not.

How much would it cost to replace the backlight or the inverter?

You could contact Asus and see. Also parts like this may be located on Ebay with creative searching.

The laptop is getting pretty old so parts availability may become an issue.
