I donno what to tell you mrzenith, it seems like a bios incompatibility problem for me. It happened before when I tried to stick a penryn processor in my Asus R1E, which had a early sant rosa platform that only took merom chips. In theory the mobo should accept it, but the bios just didn't the support for it, so after I powered it on it just turn blank.

Initially thanks to all that have answered me...
I would try to buy a G50/G60 power supply like this Mains Charger for 120W ASUS G60J G70S G70S G70SG su eBay.it Power Supplies, Laptop Accessories, Computing or this Alimentatore NUOVO ASUS 19V 6,3A G50 G60 G70 G71 G73 su eBay.it Alimentatori, Caricabatterie, Accessori per portatili, Informatica e Palmari ...my only fear is if this power suply can damage my motherboard or not...and after I think that I must to buy also the battery, because my original battery is not able to supply my last hardware configuration.... -
i dunno if a different charger would help, since I'm pretty sure I've used a 60W power supply on my G50 before. As long as it's not under load, 60-90W should be plenty to power the laptop on
-
Can I ask you what is writen on your card's PCB?
On my there is "G60VX MXM VGA CARD"
Does exist a "G51 MXM VGA card"?
I found this discussion and it seems to be my similar issue....
http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/214372-asus-c90s-120w-power-supply-replacement-easy.html
I apologize for my ot, because I don't have really a G50...but M50 is very similar...
I've already ordered a 120W power supply from ebay..
I'll make you know soon if it works -
Ok, so i installed the 260m on my g50vt and i got the standard vga driver thing. Anyone know where i can get the drivers for it and can provide a link? And also i wanted to ask why the fan is running at high speed when it used to never do that? thanks
-
you must to extract driver(by double click on downloaded file) and after you must to substitute .inf in display driver folder...
your fan run always @100% because there is a non-complete compatibility with G50 main bios.. -
Download any one of them?
-
yeah, the newer the better. But some new ones don't have the modded inf file. Make sure to get one with the modded .inf file.
-
nvm got it to work by uninstalling the latest drivers and installing older 195 drivers, thanks for your help guys

King of Interns Simply a laptop enthusiast
As I said in my PM mrzenith I recommend the asus 150W adaptor or the Targus Universal 180W adaptor. This gives you scope for any overclocks you might like to attempt plus headroom if you try to upgrade to a quad.
The power supply won't damage your laptop if you make sure it follows certain criterior.
1.) Does it have the same tip.
2.) Does the voltage on the adaptor match your laptop to +1- V so at most 1 V difference is ok.
3.) Check the voltage diagram on the adaptor and make sure it matches that on the back of the laptop.
PS.. I have used the targus 180W adaptor with no issues for over a year (other than is being insufficient to power a QX9650 stably)

sorry my english poor i have asus g50vt-x5 support orginal bios gtx 260m ?
-
Yes it does, you do not need to flash anything to get the 260m to work.
-
-
Thanks for your answer, but I disclose that card was damaged by opening package for accursed inspection by italian customs! not insurance for it!...not power supply insufficient! seller has refunded me and we both lost a lot of money...
-
hey dtd00d, i just did the swap. could you clarify how you got the newer drivers to work, along with the voltage increase?
EDIT: For all who are having problems installing newer drivers, edit the gtx 260m bios with nibitor and increase the voltage on all the levels by .05. then install the 263.09 driver using the modded inf on laptopvideo2go. everything is now running perfectly for me on windows 7 x64. -
ok so I just got my gtx 260m in the mail today.
Here's the story.
I have an Asus g50vt-x5 (from best buy). The fan broke awhile ago but i was lazy and still used my laptop to game and such. (yeah im a little retarded) But then finally I think I just burnt out the card and probably some other things. I finally bought a new fan and tried the whole, baking your gpu in the oven to make it work for a little bit... That worked for like a week but i think my 9800m gs is just done for now.( i have pictures of what my laptop screen looked like when it would crash.) anyways, when my 9800m gs was working, everytime i turned on my laptop it would show the whole american megatreands stuff and say my cmos checksum was bad and I had to set the date everytime i turned on my laptop.
but now I have this nice gtx 260m, hoping that i could just pop it in and everything would be fine. but nope, when i turn on my laptop now, all you hear is the little, "republic of gamers" nonsense but nothing comes up on the screen. after awhile it just restarts and tries again.
I dont know if i made any sense but hey, its 4/20 and im baked.
SOMEONE HELP lol -
Welcome to nbr, and happy 420 to you too. It sounds youve burnt more than just your video card. Your bios is probably damaged as well, which would explain why it doesn't recognize your 160m. Try putting back your 9800gs and see what happens, you prob wanna wait till you sober up though.gfx cards are very delicate.
-
ok so i put the 9800m gs back in there and this is what happens
http://i52.tinypic.com/313szdl.jpg
(sorry for such a big picture lol)
and is there anyway to fix the bios if it is damaged?
[Update]
ok so windows boots, but theres no display.
I tried uninstalling all the nvidia drivers but still nothing. -
Bump please!
-
has anyone gotten the hdmi audio to work?
-
Is it supported on the G50? I thought that was HDMI rev. 1.1 or something...
-
its supported, but since i swapped to the 260m i haven't been able to get the audio to work. I'm considering modding my bios but i'm not sure where to look
-
Guys who have upgraded to a 260m on the G50VT.. the GPU heatsink that comes with the G50VT (9800gs) fits perfectly on the 260m right?
What about the white cushion things that are between the video chipset heatsink and the RAM chips? Were they glued to the heatsink so it was simple to have the RAM be cooled on the 260m or did you have to align the white cushions/pads over the RAM chips before placing the heatsink over the card?
Thanks.
The forcecon is the one I have heard of being on the G51VX and G60VX.
But, I have recently heard of a Sunon fan that might work. I heard of it on a thread about this laptop but it is the first I've heard of it.
Sunon GC055510VH-A K95215 , 17 fins
Go with the Forceon because it is known to be legit. Be sure is has "F8us" on the label, otherwise it won't fit right.
You may need to buy the G51vx/G60VX heatsink(13n0-e0a0601 ) in order to get the Forcecon. I wasn't able to get the correct bare fan alone. -
-
It does? I've been reflashing with nvbios this whole time.
@ickibar: Lots of questions, I'll get back to you when i can -
Haha ya that's fine. -
-
Actually no, it doesn't... it's not present in the playback devices. I had it with the 9800m. I've never used HDMI audio before. I use HDMI all the time to hook up to a projector and a monitor (no TVs or anything).
-
EDIT: I think I may have found the problem with all our cards and drivers. The subsystem ID for the 260m is supposed to be 1A52 for the 260m's that were pulled from a g51vx/g60vx. HOWEVER, when you pull up the card's properties in device manager the subsystem id is 19A2. despite several flashes where nvflash reports to me that it has been changed, when you reboot the computer and look at the properties through nvflash or device manager, it remains the same 19A2. I think this is what is causing the problems, but i do not know how to change it. my guess would be to flash the g51 bios onto the g50vt to see if its a compatibility issue in bios. I would be glad to be the guinea pig...if i knew a way to undo in case i end up with a high-performance brick. Please input your thoughts.

so no one has any ideas at all? sorry for the posts

Will this one work???
GTX 260m MXM III Type B -

i was tried 260m g50 vtx5 worked But problem cpu fan always running :S

Good evening guys, i just got hold of an Asus G50 (dont know the rest of the code name)
And has an 9800m GS, i search some cards on ebay
and found this ones:
Asus G71GX Nvidia GTX 260M 1GB DDR3 MXM VGA Card tested | eBay
Its the same socket, but it has a diferent shape, would anyone advise me on
this? -
You need a G60vx/G51vx version of the 260m. The G71 version WILL NOT FIT!
-
-
Hi all
So summarize
I have Asus G50V-A1 with GeForce 9700GT, so in theory like Antonio wrote we are able to swap GPU to GeForce 260 GTX but we need heatsink and bottom plate from 9800 or 260 ? There will be no problem with overheat ?
Someone solved the problem of fan and no sound on hdmi out ?
Has anyone found the original BIOS to G51VX not updated ? -
So i bought a GTX260m off ebay, however the fan wont fit because its from a g70 series laptop
Anyone have any ideas as to how i could make this work.
Im trying to see if i can find a fan that is shaped differently.
I want to get this to work, since i got a great deal on it. -
-
@zertech: Seriously? Three posts above yours I explicitly said the G70 series 260m won't work. Timinator has confirmed this unfortunately and was our most informative guinea pig with the issue.
-
Well I've had this swap done for a long time now and I was wondering if anybody had an update on getting the Audio to work through HDMI?
Everything seems pretty fine for all this time, but I have not been able to get my audio from my computer to my TV's speakers through HDMI, if anyone has done it successfully yet please reply, thanks.
2 months since a post so hoping for the best -
I haven't been able to get HDMI audio from this card unfortunately. I've tried manually modding the drivers myself to try and accept the device ID and subsystem ID, but even with trying 3-4 recent drivers (25x.xx +) it didn't detect an HDMI audio device to install. No dice :/
-
Thanks for the reply first of all appreciate it. Yeah I have no experience with modding drivers, but I too have tried quite a bit in order to get sound to work and looking for a way and still couldn't find anything about getting it to work unfortunately.
I doubt anyone else has either, but I'd be happy to hear it if someone somehow has.
I also put my old 9800m gs card I took out and put it in the computer I took the gtx 260m from, but I haven't tried getting sound or anything from that on that computer through HDMI or much else on that laptop either, due to not having an operating system on that computer, but internet and everything else I was able to test without an Operating System worked fine.-Irrelevant to our problem mostly, but thought I would just put that out there. -
niffcreature ex computer dyke
I looked at the link. I realize someone else may have mentioned it, but you lack pictures of the gtx 260m itself.
This is really pretty important. Yes, we realize it has to be from an Asus laptop as you say... but it isn't nearly that simple. It has to be from a 15" asus laptop, and NOT some models of the g60, which use a NON reversed 260m. I've seen many people get the wrong thing when trying to do this... the cards from the g71 and g72 also DON'T fit. -
All G60 models will use a reverse-MXM format. The G60 is the same as the G51 but with a slightly larger screen, and the actual card and mobo from a G51 will be labelled as both a G51vx/G60vx board.
Installing a 260m makes you lose fan control (100% fan all the time) and HDMI Audio. There's no easy fix for either one. Other than that there are no other ill effects. -
I mostly agree with dtdOOd on that just to be clear, though the two computers have physical appearance differences/lights as well. But those two laptops graphics cards are interchangeable in both.
The g70's is a different case and no those don't interchange with the G50 and such. -
Just got all my parts ordered to do this. T9900, a G60 gtx 260m and I went ahead and got the G60 fan and more RAM too. Overall cost around $400 or so. I'm doing it mostly just for the experience of upgrading a laptop and because I didn't want to get a whole new system yet. I mainly play on my desktop, but I needed a faster laptop than the original G50 for modern games during the inevitable boring trips to in-laws for the holidays.. lol
Thanks so much for everyone's input on the procedure. I'm really looking forward to trying it out soon. I'll post my results after the surgery is done. -
Well, I've got everything installed but I'm having stability issues on the 260m.. not because of heat thought (so far).
dtd00d, I saw that you ran into stability issues and you fixed it by flashing an +0.05v increase. Would you mind explaining what is involved with that? Also, what is your recommendation for the best drivers? Thanks -
elo,
First off, Thank you for this thread, it helped me a lot during the upgrade progress (as matter of fact, you are the reason that I was able to resurrect my laptop)
I would like to know if you could help or point me in the right way, in order to fix a stability issue. It appears that when the computer attempts to use hardware acceleration, the OS die with a kernel panic (AKA Blue Screen) and after the reset windows is complaining that video card stopped working correctly.
Here is my setup:
Model: ASUS G50V // G50VT-X1 (Bought on Bestbuy)
CPU: Intel Mobile Core 2 Duo P8400
RAM: 4 GB (2x2) PC2-6400
Motherboard: ASUSTek - Chipset-PM45 - BIOS version 207
Video card: Nvidia GTX260M (Core 500MHz, Shader 1250MHz, Memory 799MHz/1598MHz data rate)
Video Drivers: 295.18
(NOTE: The temp of the card seems is around: 45c-55c idle , 85c-90c when it's doing something)
The only hardware change, it was to install the new video card. Software wise, I decided to new everything and re-install the OS.
the drivers that I'm using, I downloaded from laptopvideo2go.com, I also tested with 290.36 and 285.76 but the kernel panic issue persist.
It's my perception that the problem (kernel panic) is trigger when the application appeaser to start the hardware acceleration.
Example:
- The recurrence of the issue apparently increased when I enable Windows Aero
- While windows is able to load the game (i'm able to reach the main menu), the kernel panic issue shows up just after the map/mission loading (When the game engine should start showing polygons)
Please let me know if you have any suggestions
Regards
DM
