I was wondering if it would be possible to buy the 1080p version, and later on replace the lcd screen with a 4k screen.
My reasoning, is that i could save some money. the 4k is $600 more than the 1080 version , and would like to buy the cheaper one first, then later on replace the screen.
If anyone can help with information and research, that will be nice.

It's important to note that you're comparing two laptops from different series (15.6" vs 17.3"). What size do you want? If you want the G501 you're going to have to try and find a cheaper variant that still includes the 4k screen.
-
get the Clevo P650SE/SG.. For that price you can get a 970M/980M, 1080p IPS/3K/4K IPS screens and all the storage you need...
-
4k with a 960m... Not a good combo, you would be natively scaling everything to 1080P. At least with a 970m or a 980m you can play some games at the 4k resolution. (Not on highest settings though)
I would recommend to go with what @TomJGX said. -
I wont be doing much gaming on this, more for coding and graphics. But will casually play some games. I dont mind going down on the rez that much. -
The g751 is not a variant of the g501, they are completely different notebooks

The 2 laptops you listed and the Sager are 3 very different laptops. If gaming is the priority, the Sager is going to be the best buy. Much smaller that the 17" monster but not in an ultrabook form. You can get all the hardware you want. You're going to pay a premium for the ultrabook size of the G501/UX501. Benefits are the weight, slim design and lower heat output.
MSI makes an 15.6" gaming ultrabook with a 970m slightly higher priced than the G501 but it gets quite hot. There's not enough information out yet to know if you will be able to order the G501/UX501 with an FHD panel. Asus offers it to distributors but it's up to them what options they order and offer to customers. XoticPC might be able to switch out the 4k panel with an FHD but they don't know yet for sure.
And yes technically they are not ultrabooks I know. -
Thanks Fella's, My stupid eye didnt catch the model numbers. The webpage was titled new g501 ....... so i assumed all were 501's If we can close or delete this thread please. Thanks to everyone that answered and pointed this out.

If you are looking for a professional, portable laptop that you can still do some gaming on check out the UX501. Same as the G501 without the gaming skin and should be released around the same time.

There is no 17.3" 4K panel. Which leaves the G501. Now driving a 4K screen with a 960M is stupid. It should be clear from the poll that we all think this is a dumb idea.

True, a 4k display will offer to much resolution to play games in the native resolution. You might want to consider a 2.5k display though (if there are any panels available), the do offer some 25% more resolution, while not requiring that much more performance as an 4k display would.
If you like the resolution simply for having it (more space for open windows, smaller+sharp letters, ...), then you can easily take the 4k screen.
Only gaming will be an issue (insofar as you will have to lower the resolution to 1080p or even 720p for fluent gaming with high quality). -

You would not run games native at 4k, however 4k screens do 4:1 scale down to 1080p very well.

Hey friends, I'm the op, just wanted to let everyone know, that I decided to skip this. I went ahead and ordered the msi gs60-64. If do a 1:1 comparison, you will see that the gs60 is a better value. It's also just as thin. I currently have a razer blade 2012. I won't make another foolish mistake. It was overpriced, and with only 2yrs of use, it's falling apart. The battery is out. It swoll up and cracked the casing. There is more, but won't go on, on it. What i am trying to say is don't let looks alone be your determine decision.
Customer support, repairability, price, value and looks. Oh and future proof. These should be the basis of your decisions. If you ask me the msi kills the g501 in all these aspects except battery life. (a fair trade off) -

You simply select 1080p in the game. Performance will be like running a 1080p display. Personally I would just stick to 1080p but I primarily game and browse the net which 4k is overkill for.
Asus G501 Screen upgrade 1080 to 4k(uhd)
