Asus G502V 60Hz to 120/144Hz upgrade options

Hi everyone,

I was looking for display upgrade options for a Asus RoG G502V (7700HQ & 1060) equipped with a 15.6" 1920x1080 60Hz IPS G-Sync panel. I see many 15.6" laptops with 120Hz panels now, including the same line of Asus RoG laptops.

This is the reference that shows up on HWinfo64, and also written on the sticker on the panel itself: LP156WF6-SPB6
But on the PCB of the panel, I can read: LP156WF6-SPB1 (LGD046F)



Now for the possible candidates, this is a common 120Hz IPS G-Sync panel I can find everywhere, included on some of the Asus RoG laptops like the Zephyrus GX501, and maybe also the GL503VM-BI7N13: B156HAN04.2 (AUO42ED)



This is the new 144Hz IPS G-Sync panel found on the GL503VS, but it's impossible to get hands on this one yet, and 120Hz will be enough anyway: B156HAN07.0 (AUO70ED), no specs found so far

All of these panels are eDP 30-pin, same dimensions, and the connector is located at the same place. Now for the pin and voltage requirements, I checked the datasheet of the stock LP156WF6-SPB1 panel, but I couldn't find the datasheet for the B156HAN04.2, so if anyone has that it would help a lot for the comparison.

Anyway, what do you guys think about that? Would it be possible to upgrade a LP156WF6-SPB1 / SPB6 panel to a B156HAN04.2 (AUO42ED) in the Asus G502V? Would it be pin compatible, and could the laptop support it?

I would avoid the 4.2 panel, it has a very high response time and will not be ideal for gaming.

 

Well, in the meantime I managed to get my hands on that very B156HAN04.2 panel. The only one I was pretty much sure would work on that laptop.

I swapped the panels today, and I was impressed to see how well it works right away. I was warned maybe I could lose backlight adjustment, but that's not even the case. The only thing I've lost is G-Sync, but I kept disabling it anyway, so that's something I really won't miss.

From the 60Hz panel, it's a world of difference. The upgrade was definately worth it.

But as you said, this is not the best 120Hz panel I've seen. This one has 25ms Tr+Tf (BTB) which corresponds to about 6ms (GTG) as far as I understand. That's indeed high, and I can see some blur with fast moving scenes.

It was a safe upgrade that went very well. But now, if anyone knows better pannels that are compatible with this one, I'll look into it and maybe give it a try.

EDIT: Btw, I was able to overclock it to 130Hz, and it seems a bit less blurry somehow.

 

Your 60Hz panel was most likely 25ms as well so that upgrade is definitely great. I may grab one of these panels for my brothers laptop since they seem cheaper and still 120hz.

 

Hi, I've been working on this topic since last summer and haven't really got it to work exactly. About the brightness problem, when I first changed out the screen on my GL502VS (6700HQ 1070) from LP156WF6-SPB6 (Same panel you had) to an AUO B156HAN04.3, which is the monitor on the newer model GL502VS with the 7700HQ, I remember getting brightness controls to work once somehow. I never really completed the project and went back to the stock screen, but I've decided to give it another try but now I can't get brightness working and I can't update my driver's anymore or it will black screen. So would you mind telling me a bit about your process and what version of Windows and drivers you're on? Thank you very much.

 

Hi, I too have been working on this as a little side project, scouring the internet for information about comparability with my GL502VM-FY188T.
After said research, i decided to take the plunge and order an N156HHE-GA1, in hopes that it would work as a replacement for my LP156WF6-SPB6, and I'm happy to report that 120hz and brightness controls work out of the box.

I figured i would post my findings here, since this page is one of the first with any actual information i got to, after googling for options.

Overall happy with the panel, unfortunately don't have a colorimeter, but colors seem fine, if a little too blue/cold. Viewing angles are great for a TN panel.

Hope this might help someone in the same situation as me, I'll try and keep my eyes on the thread, if any questions should arise.
