    Here's my problem:

I got a virus on my laptop last night and everytime i started up my laptop it would go to a blue screen of death after logging in to windows. I decided to restore the system to get rid of the virus so I could have my laptop back up and running.

So, I found my recovery discs (there were 2 of them) and I restarted the computer and boot up the recovery disc. After the first disc completed, it stopped me and asked me for a Driver CD.

The problem is, I don't have one (not sure if i got one or if I lost it). What can I do to complete the system restore?

As of right now I cannot even log into windows because every time I try, it says that the computer needs to restart in order to finish restoring the system. I can't go on with the system restore without that CD.

I called support and they told me about the Hidden Partition with F9 to restore the system, but whenever I press F9 at startup it just goes to a menu that asks me to choose (from one option -_-) to start the system up in Vista. Again, it doesn't allow me to start it up unless I complete the system restore.

Is there anywhere I can get an ISO of the Driver and Utilities disc?

    Or any other solutions?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, i've been working on this for about 6 hours now

You could get a copy of the OS that came with your computer and do a clean install. The drivers are on the Asus website

today i called the support again, and they were of no help. they keep asking me to try the f9 hidden partition thing, but i think everything was deleted from attempting to do a system restore. this is my third day trying to fix the damn laptop and the only real problem i see is not having the driver CD. some of the dumb people at support say that there is no driver CD, and that it should not be asking me for one... but it still does. i've tried about everything and nothing seems to work, short of getting a new Driver CD.

Where do I go to get one?

The support dude said that I could ask the E-store so he gave me their number, but they're closed and I looked on the website for it, but the website has NOTHING on it. worthless. He also directed me to the drivers on the ASUS website but I do not know how to burn them all on a CD.

Am I supposed to burn them all in one folder? Separate folders? What do I name the folders, etc, do I even have to unzip the files?

I've tried a dozen different things, all to no avail. Why would they make restoring the damn system so difficult.

Everything I've tried has left me more and more hopeless and frustrated.

    Help please.

What recovery disk are you using?

is this one you made or the one from asus?

is your vista still able to boot or are you at a point where the system is unusable?

i'd have to check but the recovery disk i got with my G50VT was just a standard Vista installation disk with an asus sticker on it.

When i reinstalled / recovered vista from that disk i wasn't getting any prompts for a driver disk but that isn't to side step the issue.

And the rep i think is wrong, i did get a driver disk with my g50vt but it was just a collection of hte directories downloaded from the internet site in folders instead of Zips. You could try and create your own driver disk by downloading all the g50vt vista driver packages from asus and extracting them and burning them (Folders to the root of the CD) on a Disk and supplying that when asked.

I'm having the EXACT same problem. The 2nd recovery disk is just being spit out and a window pops up stating that "Can not open file E:\I386\Recovery.dat"
The weird part is that one of the times I tried this the window said "Can not open file D:\I386... instead of E:. I believe that the time it said E: I had selected the second formatting option instead of whole hard drive with 2 partitions. Would C:, D:, or E: make a difference?
Anyway, did you ever figure out a solution to this problem? Because right now I'm stuck. Oh yeah and by exact same problem, I mean exact same problem. I do not have a recovery partition either. Thanks for any help.

Hey Kidneyshot, did you ever get a response about your problem? I'm having the exact same issue right now. My motherboard and video card went out on my G50vt I got from Best Buy. The store sent it into one of their service centers to be replaced. Well, while it was gone, they replaced the hard drive as well. When it got back to the store location, they needed my recovery discs to do a recovery of my OS. Well, it wouldn't load, so they handed me a phone number for Asus Customer service and said good luck. Well, actually, they never said good luck, but that was the gist of it. Now When I try to load it, it loads the first, but the 2nd gives me the error message you're getting.

Did you get any resolve of this problem at all?

Anybody find a solution to the "Can not open file E:\I386\Recovery.dat" problem? I have the same issue and am unable to get into the recovery partition...F9 does nothing. I can into the bios and that's it...could this be a hard drive issue?

I want to start off by saying I'm not sure if this is correct or not but it worked. What I did was restarted the computer when it gave me the error message instead of hitting ok (Note: I kept the driver disc in). When it rebooted there were 3 black boxes... I closed all of them. Then there was one wizard or guide box left promting me to hit "ok" when I hit ok it restarted my laptop and upon restart it guided me through the windows setup. So far so good, I just finshed the setup and have setup up my user account and connected to the internet.
