Hi everyone, new to the forum. My names Aaron.

I've owned the best buy model of the g51. It's been a fairly decent laptop. I've had many problem's however. Overheating was one. What I've done to correct this issue so far is re paste the pcu and gpu with arctic silver 5 along with drilling holes where the fan is. Even with that done,my gpu idle temp is averaging 83c. When running the benchmark test, it has gotten up to 109c. I recently purchased a cooling pad and it did help but only lowering the temp by a measly 2-3c. Pcu idles at 55c and gets to about 68 on cupid stress test.

Another thing that has been occurring is my fan only kicks on high when the gpu temp reaches 88c, then cools down to 83c and fan goes straight from high to idle or low. Doesn't seem to have a medium or anything like that.

FYI: I recently had hard drive failure and purchased a new one. Reinstalled my op system (window 7) and all my drivers. The high temps seemed to happen after the new hd installation; however, I can't remember for sure since I've noticed slight overheating since day one. A common problem with this model I know.

I've looked around on several forums and haven't found anyone having this high of temps after trying several cooling mods. Any suggestions as to what to do? Any help is greatly appreciated!

I've heard they do but I haven't heard many claim over 100 Celsius. Plus isn't running high temps like that for any period of time bad for the gpu? I recall reading somewhere that 95 should be the max temp for the gpu. Anything over is doing damage.

109 is a bit hot for a 260. You can get that hot stress testing but under normal circumstances you shouldn't really get that hot for long. It's not quite to the point where it's going to turn off to prevent damage, but it's around the range where it starts clocking down so that it can cool off. Are you sure your fan is in good shape and the vents aren't at all clogged? You might want to redo your thermal paste again and see if you come up with better results, and make sure that you have good contact. You'll be able to get a good clue from how your paste looks when you take the heatsink off.

How tight should the screws holding the heatsink to the cpu and gpu be?

They should be tight enough but more important is the alignment to make sure you have even contact.
