I know this issue has been covered before. I've read the previous threads, which makes me more worried about my issue.

My stock...100% stock, Asus G51vx with a GTX 260M is running IDLE at....around 97-99C...consistently for about a year now. When I game it goes up to about 110C. It only takes about 1 hour of idle run time to get to that temp. It reaches it and stays put, and the bottom ring on my computer gets hot enough to hurt like CRAZY on my lap.

Any one got any ideas about what on earth is happening.

I don't see how the temps could possibly be accurate. Your reaching past the shutdown temps of most intel cpu's and nvidia gpu's (105C for both on myne actually, can be less or more).

You didnt specify what the temperature is, CPU GPU or the semi irrelevant case temperature which might actually not be all that rediculous :p As far as CPU temps since this is a Core 2 Duo machine HW Monitor and Everest always seem to need to have the TJMax setting adjusted to get proper temps.

The GPU Temp in just about any app should be accurate though. Try reading the cpu temp with CoreTemp or RealTemp instead of whatever your using and look up the tjmax of your processor and change it in everest or the ini file of hwmonitor. Or whatever your using.

If it's idling that high maybe you should check to see if the heatsinks are in contact with the GPU. Those temps are insane! Consider repasting or something.

My CPU temp stays about the same on both CoreTemp and RealTemp. about 50-55C IDLE and 60C under stress. Yeah sorry I didn't specify, my GPU is reading the super high running temps around 90-110. No idea what my case temp is...dont wanna know lol. It for sure does NOT shut down or do anything different once it gets above the 105-108C range, other than burn me.

I dont know much about the actual monitoring system, but is it possible that whatever piece of hardware thats reading the temps and reporting them is messed up?

And I havent tried repasting yet, but I'm going to now. lol IF these numbers are accurate, how bad is it for my computer, cuz its really bugging me. Im having trouble playing just basic games on minimal settings. Like it freezes up on Age of Empires, and Warcraft 3...

Possible yet unlikely. So yeah now that we are down to GPU temps. The 260M is hot and the G51 was hot. But this is way hot lol. I actually blew real hard into myne the other day and dropped 3C average all around, time for a cleaning myself, repasting as well.

Not being a G51 owner I dunno, I run 90 to 99 on alot of games on my G50 and I am not surprised on yours. If its over a year old definitely time to clean out the heatsink fins and fan assembly. A proper cleaning of the fan will require removal of the heatpipe assembly which would require a repaste. I would recommend at repaste at this point.

Paste is Paste its either good or its not but on a machine like this you may choose to stress a 1 degree difference, keep in mind companys claiming crap like 4C are also comparing to the worst paste they can find.

Artic Silver 5 3.5grams WITH ArtiClean for 12 bucks - Amazon.com: ArctiClean 60ml Kit (includes 30ml ArctiClean 1 and 30ml ArctiClean 2) and 3.5grams Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound: Electronics

Its enough todo the entire neighborhood with. I also picked up some Shin Etsu G751 to try out but last test I saw of 80 pastes the top 20 were within 8/10 of a degree top to bottom.

In austrailia maybe lol. I idle at 55 most of the time. Only time I idle at 70 is when I am running dual monitors because it upclocks and the voltage goes up as well. But heck thats with some dust in it too.

Lol, well thanks a ton for all the fast feedback guys, I really appreciate it. I guess ill go in clean, repaste, and figure some stuff out..maybe ill just leave my computer outside in the snow and hook it up to a monitor...hmmmmmm...yeah no.

Ill repost with results, should have it done by the end of the day lol, I know I have some Arctic paste lying around....

Well it helped by about 10C, which i guess is actually pretty big. I cleaned out everything, and repasted, but its still idling at 83-89C, and when its under load it runs well beyond its shut off point....im sooo confused...im buying a mac... all my window's PC's have had something crazy weird with them lol

lol well, good luck getting a mac that doesn't have problems (especially overheating problems). You do know the only REAL difference between a mac and a windows PC is the operating system?

Anyways, I still think it's a thermal paste problem, if your temps went down (but not that much) it seems like you replaced dried thermal paste with incorrectly applied paste. No offense, honestly! It's just that the cards don't tend to start overheating before they die ... they just die. Especially the 260, that's a hot card.

Haha yeah it gets up to 105C GPU temp, and 65C CPU running age of empires 2 on low settings after about 5 minutes of game play....then crashes the game...does this with almost ANY game...

Sorry but I have another question. I dont think pasting is a problem here, because the air being blown out of the vent is insanely hot, like you cant hold your hand by it for more than a few seconds without it hurting. Heat is very clearly being Xfered away. Its now idling at around 115-120C, its not shutting down or doing anything other than running hotter and hotter. The CPU is also running around 75-80C...is this something I should just take it in for, or should I just invest in a new comp?

I think it needs a second opinion, I still can't believe its actually running this hot. But i dunno lol. Can u temp the air coming out? Just curious as to what that figure is.

I just repasted a Toshiba, My G50VT and a 40GB PS3, sadly the PS3 used more paste then I have used in my entire lifetime.

Sorry it took way long. I had to use my wifes candy thermometer.....dont tell her.
The GPU was at 103C, both cores were at 73C
The temp of the air coming out hovered between 150F and 160F....i dont know how that compares to other laptops, but it feels HOT

My G51VX-RX05 is the same way. After taking it apart and cleaning plus repasting my I only saw a drop of about 5c...

I idle at about 90-92c and it goes well over 100c for video while gaming.

I've just kinda come to live with it...

I might take a loss but I'm tempted to just sell it then get something else.

compressed air did wonders for me :D

on g50vt I had 106c on gpu, and 75c on both cores, after "dusting" it, now I have 85c on gpu and 59 on cores max

I noticed this when I started to get extra lag in mw2, desktop usage was ok

after cleaning everything works great, didn't repaste
and no more burning hot air comming out of cooling duct :D

Your point was? Pretty sure he is all well and clean and the G51 is hotter than the G50. What i cant believe is that the machine ever made it to market

Yeah, it shuts down at 115, and the g51 runs quite hot GENERALLY, so if you're hitting 95, that's about normal. +/- 5 would be standard, I suppose, especially considering ambient temps.

The palm rest does get quite toasty (I've had 2 types of g51s - VX and JX), so I've had both the 360m gts and 260m gtx ... and they both get hot. The g51 is a laptop I'd suggest a cooler for, if you're uncomfortable doing a GPU repaste and cleaning the fan/rads don't help. Because a cooler will get you a good 5-10 degree difference in this case.

Even just elevating the computer will get you a good 5 degrees :p
