I was just wondering what the differences between these two laptops is. I'm looking to buy a gaming laptop in the $1200-$1400 range and these two seem the best. Also, do you know of any other laptop that might be better for the price?

Asus G51vx for now is a really really cheap but possesses great gaming performance laptop. Because they're discontinued, some places sell them for $679.99....i mean...for that price i personally think that no gaming laptop can beat it ><.

But for the cons....I'll say the CPU is weak. G51vx uses P7350 cpu, not that slow, but not ideal for gaming. However, it is still overclockable, so...yeah xD

Why not take a look at the MSI GX740-079US, sweet CPU + GPU, customize it with some other accessories, then it is a perfect laptop for gaming ^^

    2cent + personal experience xD

i'd look for the GX660.. the G51VX is too old and weak.. the GX640 and GX740 have horrendus screens...

hmm, how is G51vx weak >< ? Yes, the cpu is pretty weak, but if you can replace the cpu with T9900 and replace the HDD with SSD, thats pretty much fully optimized for gaming xD

I believe many ppl have bought the G51VX unit and modify themselves and the total cost is still worth it.

it still is a generation back.. T9900 is barely good enough for BC2 and not to mention , this machine runs worse than an oven and needs to be avoided.

T9900 is a fine cpu with ocing. It can hit 3.2 easily and thats enough for bc2. I personally have the gx640 and i couldnt be happier, its a good balance of performance and portability which is perfect for lans.

i'll give you some credible advice.

I own the 260m gtx and a p8700 which is very similar to the g51.

    pros:exremely fast mobile gpu
    light and nice looking
    backlit keyboard
lower rez screen that looks crisp
    cheap as heck
    will run EVERY F'N GAME
    compact

    cons: needs new thermal paste
battery life is average (1.5) still decent though
cpu is sorta weak compared to the gpu

I own every single good game available and the 260m gtx will run 99 percent of them maxed at 1366x768(native for the g51)

heck at that resolution crysis will run maxed at about 25-30fps with minor overclock.

1 game however will have to be run at medium...

    GOTHIC 4

    also

Sean: "it still is a generation back.. T9900 is barely good enough for BC2 and not to mention , this machine runs worse than an oven and needs to be avoided."

sean your forgeting the g51 runs at 1366x768, and that the 260m gtx is overkill for that resolution.

and Name one game the gtx 260m can't average 30fps all high and at 720p or 900p

bfbc is not very cpu intensive, at all.. I have a very weak cpu and I play is completely maxed 27-50fps with aa

Go with Asus. The GX640 has a trash screen (beyond awful) and if it were to ever break down, you'd need to pay 50-60$ to ship it to them and wait several weeks. Just utter trash service all around (I know from experience).

I have the G51 with T9900 OC, and I love it. I've had it over a year and I haven't found a game I can't play with great FPS yet. BFBC2 was the first game that actually forced me to OC my CPU.

I just played on Atacama 32 person full server with native reso, 2x AA and 16xAF medium/high settings and got 40-60avg fps. This was with a OC of CPU only, but to say that the T9900 can't handle BC2 is BS.

Obviously the new core CPUs are going to perform better, but only really in games like BC2. In many other games that don't take advantage of more than 2 cores, I can't see gaining much from having the new gen CPU. I will be upgrading to a newer laptop sometime next year, and by then I think I will have gotten my money out of this laptop.
