    Hello all,

This year I finally upgraded to a gaming desktop. I've decided now to sell my old gaming laptop though and was hoping to get it running perfectly in order to maximize the amount I get out of it. It has (for as long as I've owned it) this issue where it occasionally won't boot right. It turns on and I can hear the HDD, fan, optical drive, etc. turning on and running but the screen stays black. I've done all the basic steps such as re-seating RAM, clearing excess electricity by unplugging everything, holding the power button, and then rebooting, checking all the connections to make sure everything is hooked up right, etc. I also am positive that this is a hardware issue as the issue persists with the HDD removed. I also know it is not the screen because it did this when I originally got it and had the stock screen in it, I upgraded the screen to a 1080p screen and it still has the issue. I also know it's not a RAM issue because I upgraded to a new set of 8GB RAM soon after I got it. At this point it almost seems like either a motherboard issue or a GPU issue, I just can't determine which it is. Nothing about the laptop's performance indicates a GPU failure, ie. artifacts, crashes, etc, but that doesn't mean the GPU isn't failing.

Note: I'm unable to check the GPU by connecting to an external monitor because this laptop seems to dislike external monitors. It refuses to connect to an external monitor until it has fully booted.

    Any help is appreciated!

Hello and Welcome to our forum :)

If I were to wager a guess, it would be the motherboard. Something with the power-related capacitors on the motherboard having issues and not handling the sudden initial power spike needed to power up the thing at times.

Both issues can be triggered by heavy load like Furmark, but if the worse comes to the worse, it will kill your mobo.

Is your laptop still under warranty?

    Thanks!

Nope. That's what is strange about it though, the laptop runs perfectly fine once it's on, I can run it for days on end and it never has any issues. I've even put it through Furmark a few times because I thought it might be a GPU issue but it ran fine.

I've got a G751JY and it occasionally exhibits the same "black screen on boot" issue. The PC runs flawlessly other than this weird glitch which seems to be relatively common with Asus gaming notebooks. Initially I would just press the power button once or twice to perform a hard reboot and the screen will magically come to life again. I was ready to send the thing back but I came up with something that may help similarly affected owners.

Lots of folks think this is a hardware issue. I'm not so sure. A plausible explanation I found for this glitch is the loaded Asus utility software somehow interferes with the display coming to life. Sort of like keeping the display in a sleep state. What I started to do when I occasionally get this black screen is to wait for the machine to fully boot as evidenced by the hard drive light. Then I just press Fn and the sleep button (Zz), wait a few seconds and press Fn again. The display usually then lights right up. I've had to do this procedure twice on occasion to get the monitor up but the display has never stayed black with this workaround.

A very annoying glitch but this easy workaround leads me to believe that this is a software and not a hardware issue. For the time being at least, I'm not gonna RMA it for this issue as long as the few occasional clicks solve the problem. If this issue gets worse I guess my opinion will change.
