Trying to get my son something new for his laptop for christmas and he has an Asus G51vx-rx05. i am not the tech- savvy guy and i wanted to upgrade his RAM from 4gb to 8gb. Would this be possible? if so, what is the model ram i need to purchase that will fit?

Does your son really need that 4 extra gigs? If your son just does some gaming and regular day to day tasks then you don't need to buy 4 more gigs. 4GB is more than enough. I would go talk to him and see if he really needs that 4 gigs and ask what he wants or needs for his laptop.

Yes, it will take 8 GB RAM. The G51vx models use DDR2 800. But unless he is doing heavy rendering of video or 3D files and/or running multiple VMs, you will get a much better performance boost for the same money by adding a solid state drive.
