I may have missed it but has anyone overclocked the GPU and if so what were your stable clocks? 3D definitely brings this thing to its knees anything above 1280x1024 (I am using an old CRT to use Nvision.) I must say the laptop is impressive and I've had it on since I've received it pretty much without any issues other then not liking the screen. Based on what some are saying that the screen is "nice" in their opinion, I wonder if Amazon receives different LCD panels since it is $120 or so cheaper through them for their exclusive version. THe main difference I saw was no backpack, mouse, and a 500gb hd vs 750gb.
I was tempted to return this for the 3D model but after seeing the G73 and the G53 side-by-side, there is no way I am going back to a 17" since I bring it with me daily to work.

I have overclocked the GPU and my stable clocks are 820/1640/1420:
YouTube - Bad Company 2 on Asus G53JW GTX460M Overclocked! -
What are the downsides to overclocking?
Oh and buy from Ken up there! -
Thanks Ken, much appreciated as always
-
It depends. Give an example with HD5870M since I don't have GTX 460M.
If you are like me who is completely stable with 815/1125 and never ever crash with temps around 75C.
- The lifespan of this GPU should not be reduced significantly at all. 5 years for this should be expected.
If you are some who are looking for more, who think 880/1200 should be the norm.
- I would not be surprised if they are posting on these forums complaining of RMA where they have to wait for a month for a VGA replacement.
When you OC with a laptop, you can't upgrade the heatsink to something better or upgrade to water cooling. So go with something that is perfectly stable, absolutely stable.
Run a program like Furmark or OCCT and if it's under 85C for 2 hours or so with no graphical artifacts or glitches, no crashes, all stable. Then you are good to go. If you see temps rising too much and artifacts, then it's unstable and you will damage your GPU. People forget these are laptops. And that Nvidia and AMD set the clock speeds on the GPU for a reason. Those are what they deemed to be most stable and last the lifetime of your laptop. Anything more is not guaranteed.
Also I find there is a plateau in performance. From 700-800 core you get good increase in performance. 10 FPS or so. When you increase beyond 800 on HD5870M I find it's not as good. Like maybe 100 points on Vantage and 2-5 FPS in games. It's just not worth the risk. But it's a judgment call. -
Just don't push too much should be fine.

"Your order #------- from Gentechpc has been shipped!"
Best news I've gotten all month
Now I just have to wait for it to slowly fly halfway across the globe to asia
-
Your order #xxxxxx has been shipped!
Same!
can't wait to play with it.
-
Yeah, its nice to have a reunion... PLUS... see all the shining new faces.
That review was spot on, I have to say!
I'm currently in the market for some computer accessories for the holiday travel. Woo! -
Same here b/c I'm almost certain I'm going to spend my Christmas in Mexico or Cuba (525$ CDN tax incl:7 nights all inclusive 4*/flight) yay! I hope I get my G53 by then *curses @ insurance company*

Congrats to all the above posters who's units have shipped
Hopefully they'll throw it in the wrong cargo plane and have it to you in 24hrs like one of the posters here who had a lucky switch
-
heh, mine is currently in the state right next to my state. I'm so anxious. So probably after Thanksgiving day, the UPS dudes have to eat their turkeys too ya know.
and I believe it was xWaxPencilx that had that lucky mistake with the air shipping.
-
Yarr, paid and all, waiting for hard drive brackets.
-
I am so happy that my unit was shipped. Excellent service from gentechpc. But ups decided to screw me over by delaying my shipment to arrive at December 1
.
Guess I can't blame them... Crazy snow in Seattle area. I would like my g53 in one piece. -
If ur looking for some sweet accessories I'd recommend looking at crucial, they're selling their realSSDs for a dollar per gig. $64 bucks for a 64 gig sounds incredible.
-
Hi guys am ordering my laptop tomo please tell me g53 or g73 help me out size and weight not a matter
-
If size does not matter, go with G73! Better screen, better inside layout eg easy hassle-free upgrades! Remember though: G73JW not G73JH! OK?
-
Downsides = more heat
Right now I overclock at 800/1600/1400 because thats what I saw one of the reseller was doing and it's completly stable during f1 2010 and black ops -
Careful with overclocking. Not all GPUs are the same and one wrong O/C can even burn your GPU.
Go from small increments until you hit your stability ceiling. You may be able to go higher, or probably start crashing way before reaching those clocks in certain games.
There is no real "safe" overclock until you start from stock+small increments. -
So are there any black Friday deal on the g53?
-
Go to Xotipc right now they are having some specials for Black Friday to Cyber Monday.
Xotic PC Article & Info Section - NAVBAR_TITLE -
G53jw owners, do you guys experience some kind of high pitch /buzzinghissing sound and it goes louder in full force when a game is running?
Also when scrolling with the mouse, just want to know if you guys hear some kind of buzzing/pitch sound
Thanks -
I saw that last night. I was hoping to pay a little less instead of adding stuff with the laptop =/
-
I noticed that the overview for Asus g53jw on powernotebook shows that it has EAX 5.0, while Xotipc has it as EAX 4.0. Is this a mistake or are they different. And is the audio noticeable. Not really an expert when it comes to this haha
-
i am sure that its a typo because all the models in g53 come with eax 5.0.. Even in xoticpc's pics its shown as eax 5.0
-
Justin@XoticPC Company Representative
Thanks for pointing it out, we are fixing it now.
-
no such sound that I have observed.
i know what sound you are saying as far as scrolling wise and its not present with G53.
As far as making the noise while gaming, I am not aware because of the use of hearphones -
I just got my G53JW!
Only thing is, I can't seem to plug my adaptor all the way into my laptop (i.e there's still a little bit of the metal part showing when I plug it in). Is this normal? -
Yay got my beastie today.
Very nice looking, very powerful.
If you are used to 15" laptops this laptop may seem a little to big. But when I put my g53 to a older normal asus laptop (15 inches) it is barely about 2 ctrl keys wider.
I think it is because of the 16:9 widescreen it seems to be larger than most ordinary laptops there.
I will be posting some pictures when I finish backing up the recovery partition
and ASUS did a very nice job with the HDD slot. You won't hear or even feel that your hard drive is spinning. -
Hi Justin@Xotic, is there any shortage of second HDD bracket? If I order within these few days, when will i get it?
-
Yes it's normal, this is as far as it goes into the laptop:
-
Thanks for the quick reply... I thought the shortage will be gone by now
-
I have a weird discomfort with the ASUS logo under the screen, because it's soo shiny, each of my eyes sees a different part of the ASUS logo reflect brightly... so I get a weird effect going...
-
Guys, how can I know if EAX 5.0 is activated on my notebook? I only installed the realtek driver since the Creative Audigy driver on the Asus website will not recognize any creative products on this notebook. Is the realtek sound card EAXT 5.0 certified or what?

How to set my Tv as secondary monitor

I am having issues with my backlit keyboard, but running the ATK driver did not resolve it. Anyones else been able to fix this?
-

and Metallic
-
Kudos! Hope that you'll enjoy it to the max
-

Anyone recommend an accessory to extend to a 3rd monitor (its just vga?) -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
ViBook SE USB to DVI Video Adapter is what I use for my 3rd monitor.
-
Thanks I'll give it ago...
-
Any word of an SB equipped Asus gaming notebook (i.e. SB-equipped G53 in Feb '11)?

My post above answers the question. -
Intel has NDA still, even if they wanted to say anything they cant. My guess is 1st week of january once the NDA is lifted we will see info, and probably preorder opens and the waiting begins again probably late feb or early march.
-
Lol, sandy bridge is such a disappointment, brings nothing new to the table. Unless it's coming out real soon, I say this i7 doesn't disappoint.
-
Every SB quad-core is faster than the i7-940XM.
It's hard for me to see that as a disappointment. -
even the i5s?
That's impressive.
I wonder wats the battery like.
Performance is nice and dandy, but where are all the "next-gen" features everyone was expecting out of it? -
Hi guys. I want to change hdd in my asus g53, but i have some complications with disassembling of it. I read this Guide to disassembling the G53JW, but i have complication with removing touchpad/palm rest. I removed keyboard, i removed screw in bottom right corner and slide the slider to the left, but my touchpad is still locked. I don't understand how it fastens. So, can anybody give me a photo of underside of the touchpad/palm rest and explain me more detail how to remove it, and how to understand when the slider is in all the way to the left or not?
