This was the first time I've removed and installed a wifi card in a laptop and it was a bit scary without any visual aids. I thought I'd make a guide with picture for those that want to swap wifi cards but are hesitant like I was.

First off, thanks to all the forum members that reponded to my questions about this topic. Also, this is my first guide to anything ever (other than banking procedures ;) )

Q: What is this guide for?
A: Removing the stock wifi card from the Asus G53JW-A1 and installing the Intel Centrino Advanced N-6205 wifi card.

    Q: Why bother?
A: The Intel card is superior to the stock card. It has better reception, faster thoroughput (300mbps vs 150mbps) and it's a cheap (got the card on sale for $12.00 CDN. Usually goes for about $18), easy upgrade.

Q: What tools will I need?
A: A screwdriver and flat work surface.

    STEP 1:

Locate the drivers from intel and store on computer. Do not install yet.

Power off the computer and follow the great guide to disassembling a G53JW located on these forums.

You will need access to the back panel of the computer. This means that you will need to remove the keyboard, touchpad, unscrew and remove the back panel.

    STEP 2:

Locate the wifi card. Here's a picture.

Take a note of where the black and white wires are. These are the anntenea.

    STEP 3:

The annetnae are connected to the wifi card with a small metal cap. You can just pop these off like a bottle cap. Simply get a fingernail in there and pop it upwards.

Next, unscrew the two screws on the wifi card. The screws hold the wifi card in place and once removed the card will angle upwards at about 45 degrees or so.

    Remove the wifi card.

    STEP 4:

Insert the new card in the proper orientation (there's only one way it will fit) and hold it down while you fasten the two screws.

    STEP 5:

Click the anntena connectors in the same order as the old card.

    STEP 6:

    Re-assemble the laptop.

    STEP 7:

Boot windows and install the driver you downloaded earlier. (Don't uninstall the drivers or utilities for the old card).

    All done!!
