Asus G53JW-A1 laptop key "B" failing!!

    Hi,

I have tried finding around, but not lucky, how to fix a problem I just started to have with my laptop key "B" (keyboard? keypad?).

The "B" key is failing and I have to press firmly to make the letter "B" appear on screen on what ever I am typing.

    How do you fix this?

I removed the key, checked on the retainer clip/hinge and checked on the rubber cup.

The clip and the key seem to e ok.

But, when I press the rubber just to type "BBBBBBBB", I have to also press a little hard (but less hard than when the key is installed) otherwise won't type anything. If I press "upwards" with an angle (from the touch pad to the screen) it works good. From the screen down, it doesn't type at all.

How do you fix this?? Please help??

I hope I don't have to replace the whole keyboard only to fix this issue.

Thanks much in advance for any hints. By the way, had the G53JW-A1 since Jan 2011 and I am impressed
with the performance so far. No troubles at all and works great for gaming and work!

    Hector

There may be something stuck in the membrane of the keyboard.

Did you recently spill anything on it? If you did, you can try flushing it with distilled water, and then drying it for a few days by storing it in a large sealed container or ziploc bag with a good amount of rice or other dessicant, like a bunch of silica gel or commercial stuff like damprid.

If you take the keycap off, you can try pressing directly on the nub to see if it works mechanically the way it should. Sometimes the rubber can get messed up and the keyboard will just need to be replaced.

If it does work the way it should with the keycap off, you can try cleaning around it with a solvent like alcohol and/or compressed air. Make sure the tabs that lock the keycap in place are not bent or broken, as they can affect the key travel and responsiveness. If the scissors/tabs need to be replaced, sometimes you can find single key parts on ebay.

    Hi thanks for replying.

Nothing spilled on it (ever happened yet). The distilled water thing seems a pretty deep thing to do and can't really do that because of works reasons (can't work without a laptop for few days really for now).

I removed the keycap, checked everything underneath including the rubber. With no key cap and just pressing only the rubber, it works a little better and letter "b" appears, but is not as smooth as any other keys + it seems as it also has a little lag. EVerything else is very clean and as I can see the problem seems to be related to the cap or something inside the cap??

    Any help would be great.

At the moment, I have to press very deep the "b" key to make it appear (still works but feels like every time I have to press harder).

A new keyboard is only about $20 from Asus.(Out of warranty). I had mine replaced recently for similar problems. Yours is still under warranty and Asus may just send you the new keyboard, and let you install it.
Contact Asus support and explain your problem. If you are lucky, they will just send you a new keyboard. RMA is about 13 days, turn around time, but it should be free. Good luck.

Just to clarify the $20 for a keyboard. Bizcom, CA, replaced my entire keyboard on a G73JH, and billed me $20 for it. This was done during an out of warranty RMA.
Bizcom is the reapair facility used by ASUS for RMA on the West coast. They also charged me $20 for a 2gb stick of ram.
These are obviously their prices, and not retail.
