Will the G53SW be able to overclock the 2920XM???
I was looking at the ES 2920XM's on ebay and they sure look attractive at that price ;)

be careful, someone posted in the gaming section said they have bought one and although the CPU run well it cannot be turbo boosted meaning it run only at stock clock no matter what you do.

I don't know if this is possible on a G53SW or not, but I'm not sure it would be worth the effort. Your bottlecap is the 460/560m, not your CPU. Unless you need the CPU power for something else, this probably will not help your gaming.
The money may be better utilized saving for a system with a stronger GPU. Honestly though your laptop is pretty strong so why worry? If you do want to upgrade it may be better to sell your whole laptop and get a new one.

I like to play StarCraft 2 which is a very CPU intensive game, other than that all i wanted it for was to tinker, hell its only $290 SHIPPED i think.

The i7-2630QM is more than enough to play the SC2. That game is CPU intensive, but not THAT CPU intensive.

If you want to tinker, get a desktop.

Sadly what was said by dragon seems to be true. Unlike previous ES models of the XM the lower clocks of the 2920XM are not the only thing that is suffers with the Asus G series so far have not proven to work with it a recent failure was logged on the SW model the turbo failed to turn on and Unclewebb did some extensive work to try and help the OP but could not resolve the issue. This may be a fixable bug just with the ES model but it is not worth the risk splashing out that amount of money. Look for a cheap 2820QM if you cannot afford an OEM/Retail XM.

The 2630QM is on par with my slightly overclocked 920XM so you really do not need the power of the 2920XM unless you are intending some serious CPU work. As others will tell you and now I agree also an SSD is the best upgrade you can get.

I'm the guy that Dallers is referring to about my experience with g73sw and 2920xm ES. I got the 2.4 ghz mode for around $300 and it would not go into turbo mode. You may have better luck with a 2.5ghz model.

The seller was very good about giving me a refund on return.

I ended getting a retail i7-2820qm from newegg and I am very happy.

    See anandtech review here.

AnandTech - Intel?s Sandy Bridge i7-2820QM: Upheaval in the Mobile Landscape

Also I put kingston 1833 mhz memory in the laptop per Chastity's review on the asusrog forum.

The 2820QM is a good chip similiar to what the 840QM was to the XM models and they still provide similiar power when locked.

A worthy upgrade without the price tag or ES/QS possible problems.

Sorry I don't agree with this. I have had lots of fun digging into and upgrading
this laptop and my previous one.

But as far as your cpu goes you may want to run a program that tracks cpu usage like task manager then run your game for a while. See if the cores are maxing out. If they are then an upgrade may be what you want.

Also I forgot to mention earlier that my ES cpu did not have an unlocked core so there was no overclocking available.
