Interesting, good price launch.
-
thank you for starting this thread! I saw in yet another g51 thread where it went off on a g60 tangent
Ok so I'll be returning my G60VX-RBBX05 of three weeks (i'm rwzone premier silver, so I get 45 day returns and no restock fee on ALL items) ... hopefully the store kiddies wont take all day validating their rz silver policy. DDR3, larger hdd and better i5 processor are my reasons for wanting the exchange.
I was really liking my vx performance on mwII and bc2 so I'm hoping to get the same or better performance on the jx ... thats the only thing that worries me regarding the gts 360m vs the gtx 260m - the lower 128 bit memory bus .. but with double the memory speed (gddr5 vs gddr3) should that about even out the performance? -
I exchanged my g60vx which was some heat problems, and ended up getting the g60jx. The extra $100 it cost is definitely worth it. And don't worry about the gpu, all the games I've played (crysis, street fighter 4, bioshock 1 & 2, bad company 2, etc) all ran almost identical. And I love the new lid design over the old one. And from what I've seen so far the battery life is also a little better than the g60vx.
Edit: I should also note that while doing things that aren't processor or gpu intensive like browsing the web, the Jx runs significantly cooler. My Vx before gpu heat problems, would run about 48-50c on the cpu and 58-60c on the gpu while web browsing. On the Jx the cpu runs 33-37c and the gpu runs 43-46c while web browsing. -
Still with crappy warranty.
-
Yes....I'd say that the $100 upgrade or currently $150 ( Asus G60 VX is now $850)...is definitely worth it....you will notice next to no actual gaming performance difference between the two cards....everything else is better and newer...so more future proof. Unless you are really starving for money or in love with the old LED design...i see no reason to not get the new Asus G60 JX.

It is longer...and have awesome service. Plus they give the original amount back if the laptop can not be repaired.
Even after buying the warranty....this is a very good deal. -
Don't forget Bing Cashback of 5%, guys!
In MN, that's $53.50 Cashback, making the total (@ 7.125% tax) $1016.67.. not a bad deal at all from what I gather. -
Is there ANYWHERE else i can buy this from? This is killin me!
I HATE BEST BUY!
DIE! -
-
I got this laptop yesterday and have been playing Crysis on high flawlessly
-
Second it apparently has massive BSoD issues.
Third, it has a 1080p screen which for most is a plus but for me id much rather have the lower 1366x768 for on the go gaming. I already have a super duper 1080p gaming rig at home. -
Will the main difference just be that the laptop runs cooler than it's predecessor? I almost sprung for the g60 vx but older components and heat problems kept me away. I've purchase an Asus g73jh x1 instead - but it is now RMA'd, so after seeing this deal posted today it has piqued my interest. I liked the g73jh except for the crappy keyboard/touchpad. But for $600 less I coulda easily gotten by with this newer model at BB if it has no heat issues.
-
Post some temps during gaming.
Run some 3DMark06 benches, c'mon guys get the ball roling
I want to see how much cooler this version runs. -
Hey Viper - yes you're right! out of the box the laptop not only runs cooler but feels 1/2 to 1lb lighter than the vx! as soon as I pulled it out of the box and installed the battery, it felt somewhat lighter... I wish I had a scale to weigh both actuals with the battery.
Also did you notice the bottom yet? That passive heat transfer circle is no longer there... just plastic with vents... the old circle was misleading to some, as it apeared to be fan intake (if you put a sheet of tissue paper next to it at full throttle, the tissue would not blow or suck from that location on the vx). There are also 4 taller rubber feet on the bottom which I'm sure will help the cooling.
Cooler, lighter, better processor, bigger HDD, DDR3! I likey likey so far so going to reinstall bc2 and mwII to see how those perform.. i'll report back soon.
*edit* the left side wristpad seems to be warmer than the vx when just surfing and typing this post... when steam is finished w/downloading all my games again I'll report back.
*edit edit* Viper link your pics from that vx thread on to this jx thread!.. the case lid looks fricken sweet! behind the black and dark gray cammo (very mild looking) is a black carbon fiber pattern - pretty cool looking!

Rep will come the way of the person who gives me some good pictures of the bottom panel and the interior. I'm curious.
Also, temperatures and benchmarks. On paper it would seem that the 128-bit buss and lower shader count would make it noticeably weaker than the GTX 260m, but I've been hearing the gap isn't all that large.
And if it runs much cooler than the GTX 260m, it would mean you have much more room for overclocking. -
We need some numbers.
@Forge good to see you posting here again, long time no see bro. -
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
I've neen around NBR, just not on the Asus area.
Next on my to-do list is to see if a GTS 360m might fight, both physically and software/BIOS-wise, into a G51vx. -
i just bought that g60jx and it crashes alot , even with easy tasks: run garena, and when i search something in the (start-run-)Box......... can some1 tell me what cause this ? i think window7. (Sorry for my English)
-
sorry will have some hw monitor numbers for in a bit.. just finished playing bc2 and i'd have to say it runs 20% smoother than the gtx260m BUT about 20 percent hotter! the left wrist pad is cooking my wrist - the fan is damn hot and below where the fan intakes are - the plastic is very hot.... much hotter than my recent vx ... but I have to admit, same exact settings and this runs a lot smoother! (high/high detail textures, low shadows and everything else, no HBAO, no vsync and 2xAA and 1xAF - 1360x768
bc2 after about 10 min.. 4th gaming laptop and never had a gpu get this hot... fortunately it didnt seem to affect performance and for the first time since i've been playing bc2, i played for 2 hours earlier and no crash .. just damn hot lol -
I sure hope not, if this model is plagued by the BSoD issue of the G51 then im gonna pass up Asus altogether and simply save up for a Clevo.
If this truly is the case then someone needs to sh*t can some engi's over there at Asus. -
i have not had any crashes yet or bsods.... and this does run very cool and quiet while just browsing ... gaming pretty hot but some of you may be used to these temps...
bc2 after about 10 min:

Hmm. Does seem a bit warm. Then again you're using a stock system.
When you have a chance, run some furmark. That'll give a good idea to see what Asus really did.
And pictures of the bottom, too. -
I have the G72 from best buy and the viewing angles on that are horrible. How are the viewing angles on this new model? I am still with in my exchange period and would like to know if this model is better on that end.
-
well to be honest with you, the color doesnt seem to be as vivid on the jx as it did on the vx out of the box ... I havent played with the color settings yet but its still a very nice LED display like the vx. The viewing angles are about the same which I didnt think were bad to begin with.
-
nvidia notebook gpus are the source of all your problems IMO. I've had 2 laptops with nvidia gpu fail after only 1 year. I'm trying ATI now, we'll see how that goes.
-
Here's some pics I posted in the overheating thread.
-
I bought this yesterday to hold me off till I can get a G73.
I will say it is nice have not read anything on it yet really. One thing is I did crash out of Second life a few times, my guess is the heat? It runs a bit on the warm side is all I noticed so far.
But I do like this its great for a smaller machine, I normally have a larger screen.
now to read what you guys have said, thanks! -
Damn.... seems like it's running warm and crashing a lot for some. Not a good sign. I'm pissed I have to RMA my new g73jh a week into owning it. Makes me really wonder about asus.
-
Well when I say crash, I crashed out of SL.
Also only ran this a bit last night and just got on it now.
As far as giving heat numbers I would have no clue what program to get that for you.
I am somewhat a newb when it comes to getting down right very technical, bare w/me
I did see above some heat samples in another post thou. Yes the left side of the wrist pad does get warmer. I will say this gets warmer then any other gaming laptop I have had. But runs very smooth so far and quick.
I could only imagine how hot the G73 would get then.

Is "second life" a game??
-
Same old song and dance.
My G60VX with T9900 runs cooler than that.
I did apply ICD7 thermal paste but even when I OC the GPU and CPU it maxes out in the mid 80's and that's after hours of gaming.
Anyone run 3DMARK06 benhes yet to compare with the G60VX?
it would be much appreciated. -
yes its a virtual on line world.
www.secondlife.com
I would if you tell me how?
Will google how to run 3DMARK06 benhes now. -
Thanks Morgaine. It shouldn't be crashing like that IMHO.
-
Your Welcome.
Just waiting on it to download now, that bench mark program.
Also as far as my game that I do, there are many variants to crashing from it.
But my other machines I have not crashed as much, even with my nasty back up HP dv 6258se -
Yeah, that's the point I think. A brand spanking new, poweful gaming rig and it's crashing right out of the box. Not a good sign.
-
Here you go folks, 3dmark06 results and some temperature readings. The first temperature reading was while web browsing. The max temps on the second one were while playing crysis. It cools down pretty fast though, the current readings on the second temp pic were immediately after I exited crysis.
Edit: Also notice on the bottom pic, they removed the hump on the left side that a lot of people mistook as a sub woofer.Attached Files:

I've never had a problem with them at all, the problems isn't the GPU's it's the inadequate cooling. -
Thanks Viper!
What resolution was the 3DMARK06 run?
Can you run it on the 1366x768 res if you don't mind.
Seems to run cooler when gaming so that's +
The palmrest/touchpad area get hot? -
Thanks, viper3885, good to know it cool's down fast.
I agree teegunn, hopefully this will be ok. I may even keep this thing, I do not normally care for this size screen but it has its advantages and its a nice rig over all, imo. -
So..the fact you bought it at Best Buy means you have no warranty with Asus correct?
Id buy this if it werent for only being sold from that store. -
umm not that I know of I have bought all my computers there and it was never an issue.
hope not -
Here's 3dmark 06 in 1366x768, and the max temps it reached during it.

Hmm. I don't get what they did with the bottom panel. So instead of putting the fake grill there, they just removed it entirely without giving the interior fan any intake of fresh air. That's going to hurt the cooling.
Hmm. Anyone want to open up the bottom so we can see the layout? -
Well the fact that they took it out doesn't really seem to affect temperatures. Everything runs cooler than the g60vx, I'm sure the main reason is obviously the fact that the chipsets are smaller.
EDIT: Ikas v, the pad does still get warm like the g60vx. -
How do you get the Bing discount to work on this?
I tried through Bing but im a nub.. -
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
But imagine if they had put a real intake for the fan. The GPU would run much cooler.
-
Thanks again viper.
My palmrest/touchpad stays relatively cool.
I get about 12500 in 3DMARK06 with the T9900.
Overall I say performance is just about the same as a stock G60VX.
Good work. -
I bought a G51Jx-A1 at the beginning of February and this model is very similar (lower res screen, lower power and cooler dual core CPU - but same motherboard and internals and general case).
About those benches though - those are very impressive - they are 700 or so points higher than the G51JX-A1 gets at stock clocks. Aside from the CPU difference, our results match for when I do my maximum overclocks on my G51JX-A1's GTS360M. There's something odd in that. Can you please post your clock speeds - that would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
You guys have 120W PSUs right?
Thanks,
Peter -
Right now I'm running at stock gpu clock speeds.
