I just got the JX and I'm loving it. Can run Empire Total War on Ultra and Crysis on High with decent 20-30 frames. I was just wondering if the VX is better than the JX, or the other way around.

The VX has a GTX 260m while the JX has a GTS 360m. Not sure if those cards are much different, but I would just like to know if I made the right choice.

Should I return this JX for a VX or should I keep it?

    Keep the JX!
It has a better CPU but slightly weaker GPU but performance is on par or in some cases better than the VX.

I was watching some video benchmarks on the VX, and the average FPS for Crysis is about 30-40 FPS while, on the same settings, I get about 25-30 FPS and even lower than 20 on some highly dense jungle areas.

Are you positive the JX is better?

Like I said the 360GTS is a little weaker in the JX.
CRYSIS is a pretty demanding game, needs a good GPU to get decent FPS.
Did you try OCing the GPU?
It increases performance and temps are just about the same.
I don't have the JX but I do have a VX, but it's not stock, I upgraded the CPU to a T9900 and it really helps tremendlously with performance.
Now I get 35-45 FPS steady in CRYSIS on HIGH settings.
Rarley dips below 30FPS and seen it go over 60FPS in some areas but this is with the CPU over clocked to 3.5GHZ and the GPU OC'd.
Go visit the JX thread to get an idea of what good clocks are to OC if you are interested.

I was asking myself the same question a few days ago :) ... If you want to save $150 but then upgrade the processor and spend anywhere from $200-$300, you'll surpass the gts360 performance ... I'm kinda in this boat right now .. I'm really liking the JX because of the i5/ddr3 flexibility/speed .. but I really like the gtx260m's shader count and 256bit bus.

A couple of older but VERY good/detailed reviews... processors are more stout than stock but just to give you an idea of what you can run in these things:

    G60J (core i7 mind you)

I'm some-what new to computers, and still not sure what I should OC to and when it can cause damage.

I guess I have some reading to do...

Well in the G60VX the best you can install is the T9900/X9100
The newer G60JX uses a new MOBO so you might be able to install a i7 Quad.
If it was up to me I would go with a i7.

I was snooping around the internet and YouTube and most people say the VX is a better laptop... for 200 bucks cheaper.

How can I really tell if this JX is better if people keep saying the VX is better?

The VX has a better GPU which gaming laptops need more than a better CPU.
I would say the difference is a wash with the edge going to the VX for gaming performance.

So why did I pay $1,000 for a gaming laptop that is inferior to an $800 laptop...

Should I return the JX then?

My JX i5/360M scored around 11,200 in 06 out of the box. Overclocked I hit 11,900.

I would go with the i5 360M. I play Crysis with everything is mixture of High and Very high and its beautiful.

    ALTHOUGH..im returning my G60 to pre-order a G73JX!!!

Yes, it made Crysis go from about 20-30 to 30-40Fps. The difference was very noticeable. I was actually able to use 4x aa with no major drop in performance.

I bought this Laptop for one reason and it was to play Crysis. I parted out my last gaming Rig in 2007 because it couldnt play the game smoothly.

    My old system was

    Q6600 @ 3400Mhz under pelts.
    4 gigs of Hyper X
    2x 10,000RPm Raptors
    2x 8800Gt's 320Mb Versions highly overclocked.

That system scored over 20K in 3dMark 06 but could not play Crysis smoothly. My G60Jx Does.

    It's newer tech.i5 core CPU, 360GTS.
you know how it works, when new stuff comes out it's always more expensive.
There were also problems with the G60 running hot, but mine never did for some reason or other(well it runs hot but peaks at 88/89c) seen some go as high as 100c.

11200 out of the box is 1000 more than what I've read across the forums, around 10000 points in 3dmark06 seems to be the "normal" stock results with the Nvidia 360M GTS.

Here is a review of the G51JX, with some overclocking results.

More importantly, here are the 3DMARK06 RESULTS FOR THE G60JX !! :D

A lot of people have been OC'ing and getting some nice results.

    I agree man!
You keep saying "my JX scored 11 thousand whatever OC'd but have no proof.
Look I really want to beleive you but we need something.
I can post saying "yeah, my VX scored 15000 in 3DMARK06 overclocked" but c'mon man you gotta back it up somehow.
Some screen shots of actual 3DMARK06 runs would help a great deal along with the temps and CPU-Z/GPU-Z numbers.
You have to back it up somewhere bro!
    I'm rooting for ya!

Notice in the pic my Previous system and the date. This was my last Crysis build which was top hardware except for the 8800Gt's. I talked about this a few post back.

That was a quad a 4000Mhz on warm water.

    20k just like I said.

my g60jx consitently gets between 9869 and 9960 d3mark06 out of the box .. no overclocking of the GPU or the CPU...

Even though the gtx260m is a better performer on paper, the gts360m plays my games more smoothly (BC2 and MW2) and at higher fps... I returned the vx to get the jx ... the jx wrist pad is much warmer than my vx however ... the i5 cpu runs very cool even at 2.53ghz performance mode... i like that I can surf the internet and browse youtube with the JX on my lap, and not roast any nuts.. lol

Keep in mind that the vx gtx260m is factory underclocked.... unleash it and i've seen 12000 points easy.

I had a g51vx and now have a g51jx (same MOBO as the g60). The VX has room for 2 hard drives, I think. The videocard has (on paper) 10% fewer shaders, but is clocked higher, done on 40nm instead of 55, and uses less power. It *does* have a smaller bus size, but because of the gddr5 and the way it accesses information, the smaller bus has little to no effect.

So yes, the 360m is slightly worse than the 260m. But it's a difference that is only noticeable with benchmarks, for gaming they're pretty much the same.

The processors ... well, the JX has the i5/i7, which is new, unproven tech. They do quite well in benchmarks, and thrash similarly clocked core2duos... but, the core2duos are proven tech.

The JX should have room for 16gb of ram, instead of 8. I could be wrong on that, too.

And hyperthreading - well, assuming that programs start going multithreaded in the lifetime of your laptop, you'll want at least an i5 with 4 threads to support that.

I'm on the fence, personally. I would have kept my g51vx if it didn't have a dead pixel. I know asus will swap the panel with their ZBD guarantee, but the g51jx came out within the return period, so I returned the VX, got the JX, and I'm totally underwhelmed, and a little disappointed I can't have 2 hard drives. But, I'm happy with the CPU bump, and havn't noticed a difference between the GPUs. For video conversion with badaboom, I actually think that the 360m is faster, but that's just how it appears to me.

@DCx - I agree with you and I dont know if its because of the i5, but the 360m does feel a bit better performing my games at the same res and detail (at the expense of running pretty darn hot) with GDDR5 ... And I am also bummed about only one hdd bay - I thought that was pretty cool to have an additional hdd in 15 or 16" lappy

I noticed nearly double the memory bandwidth on the 360m (non-overclocked) than the 260m but half the fill rate... that may have something to do with the performance I'm seeing (at least it feels smoother than my vx's gtx260m) or what may be close to a balance of power...
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=46896&d=1268627940

Lower resolutions at stock speeds the 360m might perform better, higher res the 260m probably maintains better frame rates.

i just finished 3Dmark06 test w/ score of 10110 that is out of the box, did not overclock cpu or GPU. i have a coolermaster laptop cooler under which i think helps.

i will soon OC the gpu and run the test again and will let you guys know the scores.

Im also in the process of modding the bottom panel. Im waiting on the price for the cpu sub door assembly (bottom plate) from supplier as Asus does not have it.

Does anyone know if g50v-1a or g60vx cpu sub door assembly fit a g60jx. I been wanting to do the mod but the part for g60jx is tough to find. what im really asking is that do all 3 of these models use the same case. i would imagine that g60vx and g60jx would be pretty similar, thanks for the response.

I bought an extra bottom panel to mod as i did not want to mod to the original cuz i didnt want to lose the warranty.

I bought an used panel i found on ebay for about $20. then i modded the panel just like the videos on youtube. My temps have been much lower when gaming. look at the pics above.
