photoshop and firefox are regularly eating up all my 4gb of ram. What is the maximum ram this machine can take and what would you recommend that I purchase for it?

    thanks.

what about the speed? can it take a higher one and is that better? DDR3 is cheaper but that probably wouldn't be compatible right?

Yes you need DDR2.. DDR3 has different pin count and won't fit.. You should be able to do 2X4GB DDR2 easily... 2X8GB is too expensive probably and won't work.. That's if there are any 8GB DDR2 RAM modules...

You can get 4GB DDR2 sticks (2 of those would be 8GB total), you could order from a store with a good returns policy.

I mean the speed as in the mHZ does that make a difference to get one over 800?

No the memory speed is unlikely to have a big impact on performance. Also check your chipset supports the speed anyway.
