    If you have a G71Gx, than you can't upgrade from Core 2 Duo to Core 2 Quad.
    I tried it, but had no success. Maybe it's possible with a G71V.

    Fastest penryn non-quad core CPU is the X9100 @ 3.06GHz. For a bit less, you can get the T9900, which has the same clock speed but lower TDP (35w vs 44w). X9100 is the extreme edition, which has higher overclocking abilities such as unlocking multipliers with throttlestop. So in the end it comes down to cost. But if you're lucky, you can find a engineering sample version on ebay for cheap, I got my X9100 for $160, and it can run at 4Ghz stable for a couple of hours, or 3.6Ghz for a longgg time.

    Hey ncc, what stepping is your X9100/what temps did you get with a stock cooler?

    @OP: It seems the G71gx A1 ran a Q9000.

    E0 i think.
    With stock fan, it's in the 80's, but with my super loud blow dryer powered custom cooler, it's nice and low in the upper 60's.

    Awesome, thanks. Eyeing an upgrade for my G50vt and wondering if it's worth it.

    Best of luck! As an FYI you can also probably get a Q9100, Q9200, or QX9300 if the Q9000 works.

    If you can find a ES version, then the upgrade is definitely worth it, otherwise the gain in gaming performance is not worth the $300 bucks.

    How many fps did you gain in physics/CPU-intensive games? GTA4/Just Cause 2/Dragon Age all come to mind. I know on 1366x768 things run fast already.
