Hi Folks,
Note: I am not doing any overclocking at all
HWMonitor showing GOOD temps on CPU and GPU
Runing Win 7 Ultimate x64
Thanks to the wonderful help of this forum I recently successfully replaced the failed GTX260M in my friend's G71Gx
after the replacement I booted into Windows and started applying updates and walked away from the computer
When I came back the system was stuck in a loop where it would boot up...........let you login............and then do a BSOD: System_Service_Exception STOP: 0x0000001e
I went into safe mode and tried doing some system restores back a month or so ago.......that failed even though I CAN always get into safe mode without any BSOD
Then I rememberd how my own G71Gx used to occasionally fail to boot and the remedy was reseating RAM
So with my friends laptop I went down to one strip or RAM........system booted fine...........moved that strip to all three of the RAM slots.....booted fine each time
Did the SAME procedure with the other two strips..........always booted fine
Ran memtestx86 against each strip individually and then all strips loaded..........passes that just fine
Was able to use TWO sticks of memory at the same time (4GB) and boots fine
Put in the third strip...........BSOD
Finally I found there were 63 "optional" windows updates available (including updated video driver) so I installed those while running on the 4GB (2 strips of RAM)............
after those updates I inserted the thrid strip and WAS able to boot into Windows with NO BSOD
I tested 10-12 boots........every one was successful
Yesterday after using the laptop for a couple of days......my friend called to tell me that the BSOD was back
Any thoughts on this one? I am thinking rebuild...........I recently bought a Samsung 850 PRO ssd
I figured I could try the following on the SSD:
1. build using the original Asus System Image disc
2. clean build from my own Win7 Ult Media
BUT before going through all this work...........any other thoughts for me?
Thanks much,
Jon
--------------------------UPDATE:---------------------------------------------------
Removed a strip of RAM so could restart into Windows successfully..............WORKED
Reinstalled the 6GB of RAM
Ran Prime95 and Security Essentials full scan (to beat up my HDD)................for three straight hours..............WORKED SUCCESSFULLY
Installed the SSD
Installed fresh copy of windows 7........got to the starting services wizard and got same BSOD: System_Service_Exception STOP: 0x0000001e
Tried installing Win8 32 bit (all I had was 32 bit)..........got to the starting services and then got a dxgkrnl.sys error (probably the win8 version of what I was seeing in Win7 setup)
Pulled out a strip of RAM so was back at 4GB total (two strips still in system)................able to install Win7 and so far no BSOD
So the issue appears to be the dxgkrnl.sys and how it is interacting with my system RAM and perhaps the recently replaced video card (gtx260m)
again I bought the replacement video card from GrayFox Electronics LLC on Ebay.........they claim the cards are all "tested"
I can continue just using the 4GB of RAM.......but it would sure be nice to do some hardcore directX test utility or some game that will really put dxgkrnl.sys to the test
Any thoughts?
Thx,
Jon
--------------------------UPDATE2:---------------------------------------------------
I ended up just leaving out the extra 2GB strip entirely........so now running on 4GB RAM
I installed COD: Black Ops and was able to play it all day long without any errors so I think the video card IS working fine
Who knows perhaps when disassembling the laptop to install the replacement video card I may have cracked a trace on the MB, etc
Anyway running great on 4GB and that Samsung 850 Pro SSD is making it feel like a new laptop so I am not missing the extra 2GB of RAM (especially since there is that known bug with this laptop and Windows 7 where it only sees 4.8gb of the installed 6gb anyway)
