For some reason my G72JH gets ultra laggy within 5 minutes of bootup, i dont understand why, i did the clean reformat like 3 times and nothing has changed, it works fine for a few minutes and then after that everything starts lagging, i can't even use firefox unless i wait 10 minutes for a page to load. I'm actually trying to type this up extra fast so i dont get caught in the lag after i hit the submit thread button. Does anybody else have this problem? is there any way i can fix this?

in task manager my memory count 'is at a steady 950-960 and it doesnt change. i have 6 gigs of ram but only 4 show up in windows, i dont believe this is the problem though because its been like this ever since i had the laptop. thank you for any advice!

Get GPU-Z and verify the GPU is not overheating. The G72 will down clock the GPU (and CPU) if the thermal paste goes bad (dries up or poorly applied) or the screws holding the heatsinks down become loose. Idle temps in the mid to upper 70c or 80c range are too high and will result in overheating after a few minutes of any moderate to heavy use.

If it's not overheating, perhaps others will have suggestions once you rule temps out.

    Cheers,

i just downloaded and checked it, it reads 50, 61, 50 so i dont believe its an overheating issue.

actually i think it might be an overheating issue now, i kept the program on and saw that every bar on the right side was slowly increasing, the temperature for the last 3 meters read 54, 65, 54. What i'm confused about is the fact that ALL of the bars on the right are filled up, does this mean the computer is overheating? and if it is wouldnt the GPU temps 1,2,3 be over 70 degrees?

That bar just indicates trending over time. If you're not seeing 80c to 100c (100c it will down clock) it's most likely not overheating. It is strange, if it's not overheating it sounds like a run away process. I assume you checked the task manager when this happens and not found the CPU at 100%.

    Cheers,

Okay so i went and downloaded the Seagate Tool for Windows and did all the tests, here are the results:

    S.M.A.R.T. = Passed
Short Drive Self Test - Failed
Long Drive Self Test - Failed
    Short Generic - Passed
    Long Generic - Failed
    Advanced Test - N/A

I didn't do the Advanced Test because a message warned me about being able to lose data and i have alot of data i don't want to lose and cant backup at the moment.

So i guess i should start looking for a new hard-drive. Any suggestions on reliable brands? i've heard bad things about seagates.

I like Hitachi & Seagate (though from what I read they are having some QC issues of late). Never buy Samsung. I've had 2 cost me data loss. Western Digital is fine. I just don't buy them on GP since they started making their external drives non-removeable from the case. That's just wrong, so I won't give them my money.

    Cheers,

Well i work in city school district and we stay away from Western digital due to failure rates we have had. But Hitachi and seagate for notebooks ilke panzer said will be great. I got the 500 hitachi travelstar Newegg.com - HITACHI Travelstar 7K500 HD20500 IDK/7K 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive . Has not let me down and if you download the seagate dos tools you may be able to repair it. I repaired my one that failed and use it for xp for duel booting. But repairing can be very time consuming and if I had to do it again i wouldnt have :p.
