Hi guys, everyone with the Asus G73 laptop, if you want to participate, press Fn+Esc.
Does it freeze up, vote Yes or No - should be interesting to see if ALL users have the problem.
Also post your laptop model please.
Mine is G73JH-TZ008V.
-
AFAIK, all G73s are affected, no matter what model. Even supposedly other Asus laptops were plagued with this bug. So it's impossible for anyone to not have it.
-
I'm diligently waiting for 'No' to get it's first vote.
-
Yeah mine freezes. Has Asus ever said why this happens?
-
I think it's function is suppose to reproduce the feeling of throwing a wrench across the garage after burning your hand on a hot exhaust manifold.
-
This is the only PC I've ever owned with a built in self destruct button
-
It would be nice if they did the same as HP notebooks when pressing FN+ESC key this pops up:
-
very annoying the first time I did it... didnt do it after lol
-
I actually just considered that this would be an amazing troll on any of the online games.
Me: Anyone here running an ASUS laptop?
(Possible Responses)
Me: Can you tell me if pressing Fn+Esc increases your FPS? -
FN+ESC = Lockup Heaven for me
-
Interestingly enough, I tried it on my girlfriend's Asus G50V and it doesn't freeze. Her laptop is about 15 months old or so. Perhaps it's a newer glitch. I don't have my G73 quite yet (should be here on Tues!).
-
The first thing I've tried on my G73, and yes like all of them it just froze
.
@Swiz
My friend has a G51 and he does not have this issue too. Btw is there any function of fn+esc ? -
skygunner27 A Genuine Child of Zion
Nice and chill here too
-
I wonder why user "acoz" doesn't have the issue?
-
@kalim
i would love to know as well. either
a) does not have a g73
or
b) is one really lucky dude.
but who am i to say anything i still dont have my g73 :'( ... best buy in pembroke doesnt have and i dont want to risk buying online to wind up getting one with an AUO screen. -
Locks up with my G73JH-X3. Kinda lulzy.
-
locks up mine too, g73jh x5
-
Thanks for your input, but this thread is really only for G73 models
Although I do know some previous models also have this problem.
-
Yeah, I understand. It's why I didn't vote for anything (I don't have my G73 yet), but I was curious and surfing the forums on my GF's asus so figured I'd give it a try after somebody saying it happened on other models.
-
Mine locks (an A1) and the two I saw at Best Buy today both locked too.

Welcome to the club
I have been in constant contact with Danny(Asus Senior Tech) about the Creative/Esc + FN lockup. His team was able to re-create this problem in the labs. He assures me that a Bios fix is in the works. He said that the Creative error will take longer to fix because it envolves Realtek & Creative. -
I don't know, seems to be more like:
c) Solids disturber.
Really? Creative? I was hoping to see vBIOS update or Keyboard backlighting fix long before seeing the worthless Creative software fixed. -
skygunner27 A Genuine Child of Zion
I guess I kinda dropped the ball here on this one because I only discussed with him the ESC + FN/Creative problems because those were the only issues I have with my G73JH. My current G73JH had 206 installed and the keyboard backlighting works great. If the backlighting did not work I would have exchanged or RMA'd in a heart beat. I think it's silly that some G73JH owners keep their fingers crossed and hope that Asus will fix this problem through an update.
What's strange is, he really is putting in alot of effort by keeping in contact and updating me with the status of getting these issues resloved. He must have called me 6 times to get more info and to update me with their findings and the status.
I'm not use to seeing this level of customer service from Asus. -
Guys, I've just bought new G73JH-A1, and I've clicked damn fn+esc, and the laptop flies in heavens of freezing!!
I've called the 24/7 technical support, and they have told me this is first time we've got this case, I will post your problem to senior technician, or you need to return it back!!! -
skygunner27 A Genuine Child of Zion
lol...they always lie llike that....I don't think Asus knows how to tell the truth. Don't they know that it's easier to just be honest and tell the truth than it is to tell a lie. -
Sorry for jumping the gun. The impression I had was of ASUS putting too high of a priority on their partnerships, and not enough on the concerns and needs of their customers.
I'm not suggesting you do this, but if it was me I'd probably ask the tech if he was aware of these other major issues. I don't know if I'm the only one that feels this way, but it appears that the information supplied to their level one support isn't always making it back to where it needs to go, and this includes notifying other level one group managers or issuing system bulletins. Instead, as demonstrated below in the post by khalednet85, we unfortunately again see this disconnect in action.
Please understand I'm not suggesting that it is your responsibility to make ASUS aware of these issues, the blame, such as it is, is on ASUS for not making their infrastructure better.
It must have been their first day on the job. Yeah, that's the ticket.
-
clad to hear asus is working on issues.... though personally I do not have any issues with the Realtek or Creative drivers/software other than the conflictin I/O posted a few weeks back.... Glad thou sky that ASUS kept calling you to get updates and to test and have admitted they were able to recreate the issues alot of users are experiencing and are actively working on fixes the best they can.
-
Mine does. Although with my external keyboard, it doesn't. Is that odd?
-
It is if all the other FN+ whatever keys work properly.... Do they work with the External keyboard also?
-

It's all good. There's soooo many issues with the G73JH that I feel that if I told them more than the FN+Esc/Creative problem they would be overwhelmed.
In the past I've gone off on Asus tech's for blatantly lying to me. I feel blessed that this time they actually elevated these problems. Usually they feel as if I'm coming off as complaining and neglect to transfer me to the resolution deptartment...lol.
I was in shock when Danny called me back to tell me that they reproduced these issues and that the right people are working on a fix.
I even asked him to repeat what he had said. lol.
It's important to me that they fix these issues because I actually own a G73JH. I've also seen Asus release new models instead of fixing the current models issue.
Some of the people here in these forums defend Asus as if they were their savior.
Because I have bought Asus products in the past and at current own one, I believe that Asus can do MUCH better. If Asus can fix it's problems then we could all see other manufactures lowering their prices.
Heck...
If they'd pay me and gave me the resources/authority I need to help people here I would. If the right phone numbers were available, how hard could it be?
I wonder how many people go to forums and read about all this negative info regarding Asus and their products and decide not to purchase based on their findings?
If I was somebody important at Asus this would bother me.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -

This would be a nice April fools joke to pull on someone
"Hey could you press Fn + Esc for me?" -
Is no one concerned about the 5 'No' votes?
-
What is the point of this thread? Seems the problem exists on most (if not all) G73 systems. Since the problem is easily avoided I don't see the point in having a poll.
Would be nice if someone came up with a way to disable that particular keyboard combination altogether (especially since ASUS is not likely to correct the problem anytime soon).
Nope those folks were just messing with us.
Cheers, -
i kinda did that later/earlier than mentioned depending on how you look at it. yesterday i asked for someone to press them for me lol
edit: has anyone tried making fn+esc be the shortcut for something else, like maybe to mute or something? or is it a dead freeze the moment you press them together? -
skygunner27 A Genuine Child of Zion
I don't believe that those users are freeze free.
I know that if it was my unit that was an exception I would be more helpful...maybe even post a youtube video.
Those that voted no I've never even seen them post about the G73JH. -
More than likely they didn't read the part in the title that said, "G73".
Now ziddy123 made it six 'No' votes. -
skygunner27 A Genuine Child of Zion
^That's because he's lying
-
guys, what if I format my notebook, re-partition it, and install windows 7 x64?
is that gonna solve the damn problem? -
The issue is out of your control.
-
Guys, from where I can get windows 7 home premium for asus g73jh a1, because they did not include it with laptop !!!
-
Use the restore partition or search this forum- there's a thread for creating one from an iso.
Also, skygunner, count me as another person who doesn't lock up with FN + Esc now that I updated the bios.
-
Just confirming....just received my A2 and Fn+Esc does freeze the laptop.
-
skygunner27 A Genuine Child of Zion
Mine doesn't either with the 209 bios.
I think the creator of the thread meant out of the box freezing with FN+Esc.....leaked 209 bios doesn't count. But nice try
-
Well, I'm sure that's what Ziddy voted for, and me also.
Why doesn't it count? There's a fix out there and folks should know about it. Anyone who has this issue and is concerned about it can upgrade the BIOS. -
This thread predates the unofficial 209 BIOS becoming available. While most of the 'no' votes didn't understand the question, Ziddy's vote, at that time, was done for some other reason only known to Ziddy.
While people should know about the unofficial 209 BIOS and what it addresses, the poll was meant at that time for out of the box fn+ESC freezing. -
-
Keep in mind that you will not be able to use your OEM key and will need to contact Microsoft's automated activation number to get a new key.
-
skygunner27 A Genuine Child of Zion
Well said. -
I realize all of that. However, there's a fix for it, it's confirmed to work, so why continue to moan that it's impossible that anyone has a working fn + esc laptop?
This whole thread is moot. If this is an issue for anyone, they should just download and install the new 209 BIOS. /thread
