When I plugged in my laptop to my tv through HDMI, I had sound automatically on my tv. I didn't want that and put my headphones as my default device.

Now though, i'm watching a movie and I can't seem to get the from my TV. Sound options say that the HDMI output is not plugged in, but it clearly is, as I'm watching it from my TV but the sound is coming out of my laptop.

    Not sure what's happening here...

What program are you using to play DVDs? Some allow you to choose the sound output.

Not really my point here. I'm not playing a DVD, just some old movie I had for a while in VLC media player.

I had the option in my playback devices before, but now it says it's not connected.

Try reinstalling your Realtek audio driver. Sound via HDMI is digital so if you want audio to go to your TV, you'll need to select digital audio out from your realtek sound manager. If you don't want sound going through HDMI, disable digital audio.

Not sure what you mean by that last part, but reinstalling the drivers worked. The Realtek audio manager shows HDMI Output, Speakers, Digital Output, and Microphone. AFAIK, HDMI switches to the TV, speakers to the laptop, digital does nothing, and microphone... well messes with microphone. My headphones isn't an option there but I can set my headphones as a default device in the windows playback devices. It's a Logitech G35 btw, so it's USB not 3.5mm

By does nothing, I mean the sound i'm playing will switch to the desired, but digital doesn't play anything... I don't know what it WOULD play out of if everything is already an option itself.
