    hey all :)

As some other people, there is a significant amount of wear on my palmrest. I have tried cleaning it with water and light cleaner, and it is certainly permanent wear. I can see the finish coming off.

Any ideas or solutions anyone can think of or has done?

If i send it to Asus will they replace it under warranty? My touchpad also acts weird sometimes, so they could possibly replace it for that too.

I thought about dismatling the laptop and painting it, but it seems like a complex task with the G73's delicate wires and cables. Maybe there is a way to take off the finish completely so at least it all matches? Or a way to spray some texture onto it?

Any ideas or past experience much appreciated.

I've never understood this complaint. My G73 is my only computer, and there's zero wear on my palmrest. :p

Anyways, your only option is to probably send it in to Asus for a replacement palmrest. You may be able to buy one off the internet somewhere, but I don't know where you'd get a palmrest.

You need to stop eating your crisps and greasy food while using your laptop :p

I have had mine for two years using it solid and not one bit of wear but grease is a killer to this rubbery finish.

Yeah I'll have to see what Asus will do about it. If not I'll do it myself, I believe you can get them on ebay.

Lol :p its right were i put my wrists, so i dont think my wrists would be greasy  But maybe sweaty after a few hours of gaming  lol

I wipe mine down with Alcohol wipes meant for safety glasses and computer screens... the kind in a little foil pouch that you have to tear open. It restores the rubber finish nicely. The palm rest part is a little smoother than the rest of it but it's the same color and all.

haha :) could be though if you are playing for many hours a day your skin oils can break down surfaces its not unheard of, i remember when I used to play World of Warcraft and was a Holy Pally that used spam Flash of Light with very high haste and my left button was completely worn away :D

Someone posted an awesome mod, I can't locate the post now, but basically the area was recovered with 'vinyl ???' and IMO looked better than stock. I use windex on that surface only to remove the olive oil and pizza sauce (can you tell I am italian)?

    I found a picture :

I don't rest my palms on the palm rest when typing.

Know how you get carpal? By typing with your fingers at a horrible angle with your palms down. Learn to type so you don't destroy your fingers. You'll be happy when you're older and don't have carpal or arthritis because you learned to type properly.

Anyone else noticed rubber like texture wearing off around the fan exhausts? Mine is like a snake shading its skin :))

Hmm, what do you mean? Back by the vents there is no rubber texture and it's just plastic.

Ohh ok, on the top there yeah.

That is very odd o_O I've never seen that.

Something must have gotten on it, this finish seems to be very delicate with grease and other substances. What a shame

my palmrest is not wearing but when i push with the left palm i can feel it is separated from the bottom and it is sometimes squeaking
also i hate those big holes around the touchpad buttons i can feel them full with garbage too
and the top plastic around the display is not tight enough too
    poor Asus design

Dumb question but did you put a screwdriver to the row of screws on the bottom along the front edge? If they worked loose it would make a gap in the front like that.

I had a big problem a couple weeks ago with the hard drive controller trashing my data on my drives. I wound up sending it in for service. They replaced the motherboard which fixed my problem. I took the laptop apart to check for loose ribbon cables or accumulated dust or something before I sent it in on RMA. Anyway, about half of the screws were loose. My case was creaky like that too. The previous RMA last year they must have left all the dang screws loose. One screw was so loose that the inside of the hole broke out and couldn't be fixed. The tech noticed this and replaced the bottom housing. Now my laptop is tight as a drum again.

You're acidic(?). If you can put something like a protection on the palm rest it will be useful from decaying the rubber.
Does your hands get sweaty when using the laptop? If cleaning with alcohol do not scrub the rubber too much as it will further destroy the lining.

They are right there on the outside on the bottom. You don't have to remove the keyboard. There are three screws that hold down the front of the palm rest. As you sit and type on the keyboard, there's one on the front left corner, front right corner and one just to the right of the indicator lights on the skinny front edge there. The front edge of the palm rest sort of snaps in place and the three screws that are screwed in from the bottom up into the palm rest are what holds it firmly in place. If one or all of those got loose or fell out then it would be all creaky and tend to pop open leaving a gap. If they are loose, I would put my screwdriver on all the screws that are in "holes" on the bottom side of the laptop and make sure they are tight. There are eight through the bottom case. There are two, I believe, behind the battery (you have to take it out to get to those). There are also two behind the DVD or Blu-ray drive. I wouldn't worry about those unless a bunch of the other ones are loose. It wouldn't take very many of those screws on the bottom of the laptop being loose for it to feel wobbly or creaky. The three on the front bottom edge are the ones that would allow a gap on your palm rest, though.
