Hi everybody. As you can see I'm new here but I already like it. You see, I came to a dilemma in choosing a laptop. This summer I'm going to move around alot and need a reasonably powerful laptop to game from time to time. Nothing too fancy, Planetside 2 and the rest of F2P games that came/are coming out this summer. And maybe some BF3 and Skyrim. My budget is tight and as far as I know, the G73 is my best option andI'm ordering one from eBay. So my question is, how do the Radeon 5870m and GeForce GTX460m compare? Have the drivers brought much optimization since 2010 and which of theese is better in the long run. Any strenghts and weaknesses, and what has changed since 2010. I'm going to use this laptop for at least a year so I need something that can hold its own. So it all boils down to the video card. I searched the forum about comparisons of theese cards, but the newest posts are from 2011. I was certain about the 5870m, but when I read around the forum my opinion changed. So now I need your help. I would greatly appreciate if you could voice your opinion on the matter. I know I'm starting a potential flame-war, but I had to ask this question.
Cheers

The G73 is really not your best option as you mention above. It is dated and cannot push out results capable of running BF3 at anything above high and your future proofing will be a year off tops where the G73 5870M/460M currently stand, those that have G73 do not need to move but it would be a bad bit of business to buy into one now when they are 2 generations behind.
If you really want an Asus desktop replacement consider the new G75 seriously there are good looking deals on the markets for the IVY and 660M GTX, if your travelling better battery life would also be a bonus for you.
If you want smaller consider the new 11 inch Clevo/Sager model which houses the same Ivy Quad core with a 650M GT slightly slower but portable and powerful. http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...er-np6110-clevo-w110er-first-look-review.html -
Thats the thing. I already have a capable desktop and this laptop is not a replacement per se. By moving around I mean that I will be relocating for the summer and I don't want to lug around my desktop. And my budget is pretty tight- 700-800$, 900$ tops if the offer is lucrative enough. From what I've gathered, the G73 is my best bet. But if you have any other suggestions I would gladly listen to them. And I have a very negative opinion regarding the so called "ultrabooks" and other laptops with less that 15" screen estate

For that budget I would say Alienware M14x personally. Tidy little models come with a good CPU and GPU and can be had for within your budget. If you already have a desktop then you dont really need a lot of power lugging around a desktop replacement would be silly. Take a look at the M14. The R2 version has arrived so you can pick one up cheap. 900p screen on a 14 inch will look a mile better than the G73JH 900p 17 inch.

Thanks for the suggestion Yiddo. I looked at the m14 and it doesn't look like a laptop I would like. Playing anything on a 14" screen looks odd to me. A friend of my has a 14" laptop and I don't like the experience. I need a decent screen size. So if anyone has a response to my original question (HD5870mvsGTX460m), I would gladly read it.

Sure thing well I will quit trying to tell you its not a good idea as it is your choice at the end of the day you just may find it struggling on some of the more powerful games on their way to the market for instance the new Metro.
The 5870M will beat the 460M GTX hands down even if it is the full version 192bit and not the best buy gimped version 128bit. It sits on par with the 560M GTX but the JH did not come without its problems, most commonly overheating, touchpad issues and BIOS updates being required so if you want the safer option the G73SW with the 192bit GPU is your best bet, not the best buy versions. The SW also has the luxury of SATA III speeds, USB 3.0 and a SB CPU.
