I was playing DayZ and all of a sudden display goes off. The sound was still there and the game was running. I restarted the laptop and the display just doesn't turn on.

Is the gpu fried or something? I bought it from BB more than a year ago. Worked perfectly until now :(

Try it on an external monitor.

Hooking it up to an HDTV using the HDMI or VGA port will also work to troubleshoot the issue. If the HDTV displays video, but the laptop screen does not, it indicates the GPU is OKand the problem is likely a bad LVDS cable connection, bad cable, or bad laptop display.

I have a similar problem: My screen is black, but the back light is working. I have it plugged into a VGA and the external monitor works, and the laptop is blank, its back lit if I tell it to display on both. When I use the HDMI cable, both screens work, it has even worked after I've taken the HDMI cable out.
Any Ideas on what the problem could be?

Xavier what happens if you boot up in safe mode with no external display connected. And welcome to the forum.

@Xavier Clash, when you say "both screens" do you mean HDMI and VGA, or either and the internal display?

Sorry it took me so long to back on the forum

@ JOSEA, No screen in safe mode. That should mean its not a software issue, right?

@ALLurGroceries, both meaning external and laptop screen.

Any other ideas? Or should I open it up, which is what I am ready to do.

Oh, and thanks for the warm welcoming!!

Do you get anything on the laptop screen when you first power it on?

Also, when you plug/pull the HDMI and the internal screen comes on, does the screen come back after a standby/resume cycle?

When I plugged it into the HDMI I did not get it on both screens this time, even though I told it to display on both. But when I was moving the laptop back to my room the screen flickered on and off when i touched the back center area, around the battery. I could not find a place to hold that would keep the screen on however.

When I turn the laptop on, I do see flickers with what looks like the normal start up, but the goes black. And I cannot get into bios without an external monitor.

Smells like a loose or bad LCDV cable. It may need to be disassembled and both connections redone.
