Hey there I had my Asus G73 for a couple of months, all working fine.

Until recently....... I started playing World of Warcraft. Now, at random times when I'm ingame, my laptop's screen turns blank, then for 4 seconds the blue lights glows and keys too - then my laptop switches off.

Now so far I only experienced it in-game. To me it seems like a "safety-feature" to prevent my laptop/gpu/cpu? from overheating? I tried updating gpu drivers to 10.7 still the same.

Do you guys have any idea/solution/advice on my Asus G73 or perhaps anyone had the same issues? :(

    EDIT:
I tested my temperature with Hardware Monitor. Ingame it is 98C to 101C! That is not normal is it?

    EDIT:
I have just tested with BFBC2 my max temp is 89C-90C! With World of Warcraft it is 98C up to 101C! Amazing! But now, how to fix it? I'd probably have to turn down my settings on WOW? :(

    EDIT:
I disabled "Triple Buffering" temp is now down to 93C... Weird, Ive never had any troubles. All I can think is that Im in different world now where there are much more detail and graphics, could it be? All my settings are on Ultra. Ill have a play around and go to another place in WOW and see if my temp is still the same. Im NOT happy with my Asus G73!!! Didnt expect that from an Asus G73!!! :(

Last edit: I read somewhere in the threads the Asus G73 max temp is 110C, then the safety "switch" kicks in and switches the laptop off. Is that true?

No thank you :) Im not pasting no nothing :) my laptop is still under warranty. My last option is to take it back, but I dont really want the hassle, so want to try some basic stuff before I decide to take it back!

Hmm well there is a problem with Blizzard's other game SC2 where there is no FPS limit so the GPU overheats.

Maybe try it with WoW also? Try playing with V-Sync on?

Re-doing the thermal grease IMO is about a 20 minute job in total, from start to finish.

IC Diamond 7 and new Thermal Pad from Frozen CPU will run you about $25.

Even if you RMA or return your notebook, it still won't run as cool if you do this. I think it's worth it.

Just watch BTO Tech's video and be careful and take it slow. And I'm serious, taking it slow and careful is about 20 minutes of your time.

    http://www.frozencpu.com/

I bought both myself and plan on redoing the thermal when they arrive.

    Starcraft 2:

Error with MaxFPS rendering value which should be set manually to 60 in config (dont have the precise command here, sorry). If the value is not set and your GPU is rendering game fine, it will go over your screens rendering possibility and keep rendering to 100% of GPU usage, essentially burning itself out.

    World of Warcraft:
I play for 4-5 hours constant with my Asus G73JH, reach temps about 77C max, with Ultra settings BUT the shadows. Shadows are the worst %@)*ing thing ever designed by Blizzard. No matter if you have X-fire or SLI super PC, those frikkin shadows will just @%) things up. Set them to minimum, you should see improvement.

    Activate V-sync as-well, helps!

What surface is your laptop on?
How much space is behind the laptop's vents and in front of it (where it sucks air)?
    Do you have laptop stand/cooler?
Running multiple game instances? (eg. playing 3 WoW's at once or playing WoW and SC2 at once)

Dont know what else to check.. I am at work, so doing this in a dash!

Hi Mel wow thanx. All Ive done is switch to ULTRA settings, and put shadows to LOW. Amazing how big difference a small setting can do! My temp at 82-84C.

My problem as been solved :) thank you.

I only had 2 issues with my Asus G73 so far, this was one of them.

The other issue... the other day I was watching movies in my bed on my laptop (over 2 hours). Instead of putting it on something, I left it on the blanket. The bottom of the laptop (mostly on the GPU side) got so hot, so I got the GSOD (Grey screen of death) and then switched off itself. I then put a flat solid lid (actually our washing basket cover lol) and then it was working perfectly again.

Other than that, the G73 is a great machine! :)

no it isn't.. if u look on the forums , there are problems for every laptop.. This overheating problem as proven is not the G73's fault but the games fault.

Excuse me, but not every laptop is as problem-ridden as the G73JH. Please show me which other laptop had major problems with GSOD, PSOD, BIOS updates, driver upgrades, thermal paste, unresponsive keyboard, audio problems, etc.

Many laptops have problems, but very few to the extant of the G73.

I have an Asus G73 as well, the G73JH model with the QM720, ATI HD5870, 8 Gigs of ram and 2x 500 Gigs Hard Drives.

I was able to play World of Warcraft while having FPS in the ranges or 60 to 200 in open areas.
At least 60 FPS in Dalaran on busy nights.
Up to 180 FPS in 5 man, up to 120 fps in 10 man and up to 60 fps in 25 man.

I play at 1920x1080 with ultra settings.

I must say I'm very happy with my new laptop!

Also, I haven't run into any issues at all, no overheating or anything.
I do use a laptop cooling pad though... Always did on all my laptops!

    @sean473
a4500435 is right. The asus g73jh does hold a lot of problems however there are workarounds thank god. The clevo models possess no problems and are by far the easiest to work with + their reliability is top notch.

One thing I found about this notebook is that you have to blow out the vents with air every now and then.
Even if you are in a home that does not have a smoker, it will surprise you how much dust comes out of the unit when you do clean it out!
If you do this you should not have as many issues with the computer over heating.

Give it a try and see for your self.

Your laptop is too hot although it is within the range of our GPU 106c. It's still hot.

Yeah, there are many problem in our units as well as the other laptop brands. That is why customer support is releasing their update to our drives etc.

My current laptop hits 110C and then shuts off. I've been having these problems with bad airway for the laptop. Make sure you turn off the laptop, spray some compressed air, and make sure the airways are clear of any obstructions or any heat creating elements, such as the ac adapter.

My G73 also randomly switchs of during BFBC2 it has only just started doing this, when after approx 30 sec it allows me turn it back on GPU-Ztells me my temps are approx 80-85 deg Cel so I am assuming a heat issue. As I write this GPU-Z is telling me my GPU is 73Deg Cel any thoughts or advice would be appreciated is there a sticky or link to video for cleaning air vents or re-pasting gpu ?

This is the cause of GPU overheating. I had this problem before after 5 months of having it, the laptop paste degraded and I had to repaste. After repasting, temps never reached 90C ever again. Max I saw was 85-88.

I know I was having these issues with my G73 and I could not play anything with the laptop as it would reboot and or lockup from what seemed to be a heat issue.
When I sent it in to be repaired they fixed what ever it was. They ran a test and ran the laptop full out over night and it worked. I have done the same for 12 hours and it worked just fine also. I can play all the games I want and it does not overheat and reboot. Also my temps do not get as high and when pushing it in a game, when I am playing the machine will cool down real quick when I stop or when I get a lull in the game. This would not happen before they repaired it.
So you might think about sending it in for repair as it looks like they have a fix for this issue.
And it did not take very long for the laptop to be fixed. They got it on Wed and had it on the way back to me Thursday. That was faster than I though it would be. The last computer I sent in to a company to be fixed took over a month.

I cant stress this enough, I was getting idle temps of 75 and gaming temps and GSOD at 109. I then blew some air in the vents and my temps dropped dramatically I now idle at 62 and game at 87, ridiculous... Sucks up mad dust lol
